I am assuming this is just parts ripped out from a TG16 system and adjusted so they can be hooked up to a arcade cabneit right? That's pretty cool, but isn't there some kind of adapter you can buy or something that can hook up to an arcade cabneit monitor? Not sure of that though.
-
One thing that would be cool is to consolize that. I didn't even know there was an arcade version of the TG 16, insane. You would get good RGB out of that since it is made for Jamma. Thats the best signal ever, it will look as good as a computer monitor with Magic Engine without a doubt.
I wonder if you can somehow hook a CD unit to it. I am sure theres a way. Just got solder to pins on the board or use parts from a real TG-16. This would make an awesome project, wether you want to consolize it or put it in a cab. Of course now you can mod RGB easliy out of a TG16 or Duo thanks to Gamesx.com
-
I remember that system. There was an article in VG&CE about it. Forgot the name of the company, but they offered Turbo cabs like the Nintendo Playchoice systems. Obviously, it never took off, but that would be a cool little collectible. Good luck steve666, heh.
-
Oh man, this is real? I had no idea! That is pretty cool.
-
Haha good luck Steve, I was gonna bid til I saw your name on it!
-
Oh crap, I didn't even bother to look at the bidder when I looked at it! GO FOR IT, STEVE!
-
Hmmmmmm ;)
-
Hm...that would be interesting since I just got a new jamma cab yesterday...unfortunately, I don't think I can afford it at the moment. (Plus it's no fun to bid against someone on the same forum :) )
-
There were arcade PC Engine pcbs, i have an article in CVG magazine from around '89 showing the hardware.
-
Scans please haha.
Tell us how it turns out for you when you win it steve. I take it you have either a cab or supergun to run it. I hope it uses the actual turbo chip games with no probs. Most arcade/home systems have different carts, even the Players Choice 10 uses these short and wide exposed boards for the games instead of NES carts.
-
Because the pic isnt good at all I couldnt tell for sure, but the way it looks it looks like a gutted pc engine there, with a rf on the right and ac power cord on the left, and adaughterboard included for controls and what not.But the cord plugged into the ac jack looks like it has aplug adapter for arcade crap instead.I think the guy took lousy far away pics on purpose.Email hm for larger ones. You need to get a look at the card slot, and have him list what the instructions say about what hu-cards it takes. You guys need to keep in mind this item is'nt tested, comes with no games, and you have no real idea wether it works or not.It might be neat to look at,but any dead duo is neat to look at too but no where near worth over 100 bucks.I regret even listing the link on here now knowing steve has placed at least a 100 dollar bid on it.I dont think he is getting his money worth.
The guy is asking way too much for is other auctions too,Mk 2 bios chips do not go that high. You can get a MK2 pcb itself working for far less.
You should research the stuff before you bid on it.For that matter you should check local arcade vendors inyour area. They usually dont mind letting you dig trough their junk for old stuff in hopes you will buy it.When it stops making money they dont need it anymore, and most of them do not have the time to list on auction sites.I have many arcade shops near me that I can go ig around in at any time.Funny too that you mettioned it,the arcade snes system,Godwins tried to push that crap on me many times, but its pratically useless,as the controllers are way oversized, clunky, with thumbpads way too hard to press.Alot of these places will let you nab Neo carts cheap too.Steve, rethink your bid. That hunk of scrap isnt worth that amount of cash.Id retract it and leave it where it sits, untill the guy spost better info on it,and states wether it really works or not,and what types of hu-cards it takes.

Good points. I knew it was a risky item to bid on, but my brother and I decided to take a chance. My brother has a supergun and I'm bidding on his behalf, really. He's intrigued by the documentation and wants to look it over. Obviously I'm keenly interested in this item as well, but he's the brains when it comes to technical issues.
If I recall correctly, the TG-16 arcade cabinets housed modified console hardware. I recall Victory Run as one of the games definitely used... though there might also have had some cabinets with World Class Baseball (and possibly other titles). I'm speculating here, but I believe only North Amercian HuCards would work on the hardware.
These TG-16 arcade cabinets were officially sanctioned by NEC North America, though it was a short-lived affair, I'm sure.
A year or two ago, one of the TG-16 yahoo groups had some neat photos of the TG-16 arcade hardware held aloft by an NEC executive ... this was probably scanned from a magazine (possibly the one mentioned earlier).
I am pretty certain I don't have this magazine, or any coverage of the TG-16 arcade hardware, because I have been cataloguing my library and would certainly remember this item.
I appreciate your concern, by the way, Michael :)
I don't dispute that this seller inflates prices, nor can I confirm that the hardware pictured is legit. I'll ask for more pics...
we'll see what happens :)

You know Steve, a standard JAMMA supergun won't work on that board as the edge connector is not JAMMA. You will need a custom connector for it, which actually isn't custom but just not JAMMA. All superguns are pretty much JAMMA.
That said I'm all over this thing. I have a PC Engine arcade setup that I don't know if it's official nor have I ever tested it. I need to get on that. It's just a PCE with a timing board and some other salad on it.

Well, it was fun while it lasted, folks. Unfortunately, our top bid was way too low:
dragsy US $255.00 Sep-19-05
arcadecollecting US $250.00 Sep-19-05
stevek666 US $150.00 Sep-17-05
Now, I figured that our budget wouldn't allow us to get this item, but I was still hopeful that we'd get lucky. You know -- it's the same feeling you get when you buy a lottery ticket: "I know I have no chance of winning, but I could possibly win, so I'll cling to that improbable possibility and enjoy the ride".
That said, wouldn't it be nice if "dragsy" turned out to be Sunteam_Paul! I don't think we're going to be so lucky, unfortunately.

Dude, "dragsy" = me.
Expect a write up on that one and the other systems I have :D
-
$250.00 I doubt its even remotely worth that. Its kinda getting crazy there. Does that system seriously only connect with an RF hook-up? Or is it an RGB? Its bad enough that it isn't jamma.

I assume it's RGB. All arcade monitors are.
Have you ever seen one for sale before?

I have never seen this item offered for sale, ever, through ebay or private trading / selling circles.
Anyway, D-Lite: YOU are dragsy !!! ??? I thought the winning bidder was based in the UK for some odd reason... I must be losing my mind (although it was a late post).
EDIT: OK, now I remember what I did: I looked at your ebay profile and saw that you recently purchased some items from a UK seller. That stuck in my head, and I got confused and thought that you were also based in the UK. Mystery solved. My stupidity confirmed.
Well, I'm glad that we'll be hearing about this item from you :).
-
Too bad you couldn't win Steve, but that arcade guy really made the price high.
-
Are you sure it's not jamma? I emailed the seller about that and he said it was (but we all know how that sort of stuff goes). It does have the right number of connections (if I counted correctly). The only problem is that it doesn't have the notch. However, quite a few bootleg, homemade, etc. boards don't have the notch since it's easy to take the key out of your jamma harness (if it's even there in the first place). Anyway, if it really is jamma like the seller says, it leads me to believe that it might just be a hacked console converted to run on an arcade setup. I'm really interested to see what it actually is when you get it.

For anyone that still doubts that there was such a beast as a Turbo-based arcade board: I finally found a reference to the Turbo arcade system in the January 1990 issue of Video Games & Computer Entertainment. From the Destination Arcadia section on page 96:
United Amusements - this Los Angeles-based company is utilizing NEC's Turbografx-16 home video-game system as the driver for their arcade system. This will enable the arcade operator to change games quickly, and, more important, let the player see games before they hit the shelves for home purchase. United Amusements has already signed a big deal to get their machines in theaters around the country. (See next month's issue of VG&CE for a detailed story on the United Amusements/Turbografx-16 game system.)
Unfortunately, my collection of magazines is in such a mess right now (moved recently) that I cannot locate the February 1990 issue of VG&CE that has a longer writeup on the board. I do remember there being pictures of the system, but I cannot recall what they looked like so I dunno if what is shown in that auction is the United Amusements board or not.

Bonus points for quoting Video Games & Computer Entertainment 8) .

For some reason when I zoomed in to the arcade TG16 picture it looked like an RF plug that comes out of the side of a home TG16. Thats why I was worried about it being RF, but of course all arcade monitors are RGB.
As for the price it is a rare item to come across so I guess it has no specific value, but going real high depends on how bad you want to just collect it. Still going over a few hundred, ouch. Oh well it will be interesting to see what it all does.

Don't forget: in addition to researching / documenting this item for the Turbo community at large, we want to actually USE this hardware. Sure, it's a novelty, but using this item was (is) certainly a major attraction to it. I'm so jealous of D-Lite :).

You do realize you're talking to a Neo Geo guy, right? ;)

Haha, yeah thats why I stopped and thought about it. It would be hypocracy on my part to say it isn't worth much at all. Especially after I just paid total $615 for Art of Fighting 3, Samurai Shodown 4 and Last Blade 2 JP carts for my AES 2 weeks ago.
Thats collecting for you. Please explain the arcade system that you already have that's unofficial maybe. What are some tidbits about it?
-
OMG it's JAMMA.
This thing is both simple and quite cool!
Best part, full original manual and docs!!!!
It is a PCE with a timing board as I suspected, but there is obviously more on the board that converts to JAMMA.
Biggest question is the bios on the PCE. I assume it is a US bios since it's a US arcade system.
Oh the things I need to poke around with this! Don't worry, full pics and manual scans will follow my friends.

And OMG I just scanned and put the documents on my site.
DO NOT POST THIS LINK EVERYWHERE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The .pdf file is over 3 Mb so I don't want 45,343,982 people downloading it.
Aaron, could you post it here at pcenginefx.com?

:D Thanks for the document scans, my brother and I were eager to see them. It seems that the hardware works with U.S. HuCards.
Also: I've never seen the TG-16 arcade marquees on ebay -- has anyone ever seen them... or possibly own one? I suspect the following were made:
1. generic TG-16 logo
2. Victory Run
3. World Class Baseball
P.S. D-Lite you are one lucky fellow :)

Haha, luck is a large part of it. The biggest part though is no BS. You see something like this come up and you just have to jump on it and take one for the team. If one of us didn't get it, then we may not have any info at all.
So everyone, please post interesting TG/PCE auctions/items when you see them!
-
Thanks for the scan! Another wonderful item in the scene! Not quite as good as that unreleased proto-board of some Tecmo game though.
-
Awesome info D-Lite, just read the pdf file. Its nice to know that you can set it to act like a home Tg 16. Anything interesting or different that caught your eye on it? Also what plans do you have to hook it up through. I assume you are using a super gun right now?
Also I sent you another PM about S-video, PM me when you get the time. Thanks.
-
hi yea its very rare there is even a turbografx cab with the tg16 jamma board in it for sale in colorado !!!! ;)
