Title: Dragon Saber....
Post by: ddd1234 on September 05, 2011, 09:57:08 AM
...is the biggest piece of crap ever! No, I am not trash talking for no reason!
-The hit box is ridiculous.
-mandatory hits (Any good shmup does not force you to get hit).
-being stuck in a wall leads to instant death (other GOOD shooters make you invincible, so you can pass through the wall).
-you speed down when your hit! (Good luck at the final boss)
-They do not heal you after you beat a level.
-Some weapons do NOT hurt the boss, unless you in a specific position.
I am a very forgiving person when it comes to old games, and I have beaten the likes of Super Raiden, Rayxanber II, Gradius II and Truxton. But this piece of crap is a chore to play, and the flaws stick out like a sore thumb. I seen a review of this game at GAME DEN, and I can tell you, that guy was not in his senses when he wrote that review. I am guessing he played the first few levels, and made his judgment. But please do yourself a favor, and DO not listen to him! This game is terrible. I can't believe how the likes of Rayxanber and Truxton can get 2-3 star reviews, But this piece of s**t is highly praised. I paid 5 bucks for a mint copy of this, but if anyone wants to take this sh*t off my hands for 1 dollar, I am more than willing.

Yipes!
Isn't this the sequel to Dragon Spirit? I liked that game okay. Have you tried the two player? Maybe that helps...

The things you are complaining about are/were very common among shooters back then. Expect to hate a lot of games.

I own the game and also have to admit it's a tough game, but that is just part of its charm. It's not all that bad. Some games just aren't for everyone. Ballistix might be more suited for ya...

I don't think this game is that bad. I'm usually pretty bad at shooters but with a little practice I was alright at this one. What is a mandatory hit? I don't understand the wall thing either. Maybe I just missed this when I was playing it. I think you are upset that it is difficult. I've played other shooters on the pc engine that are much less forgiving than this one. Like Zeta said I think you're going to hate a lot of games on this system, its just part of the times. They extended gameplay by ramping up difficulty.

I have Dragon Spirit and I kind of feel you and have similar complaints. My big issue is the dragon is a slow moving big target and speed power-ups are few and far between. Beyond that I think the game is also dull and on the boring side with the music being the only standout. It's a different kind of shooter though so I don't expect it to play like Blazing Lazers or something.
I don't have Dragon Saber, but I've played the first few levels and I think its a lot better than the original. The game seems more fun to play and the bosses are a lot bigger and interesting. I plan on picking it up in the future and giving Dragon Spirit another try.

Ninnypants trolling again?
You're confusing difficulty and being a tad unfair with crap. If you want to see real 'worst episode evah!' shooties, go play something like Toilet Kids or Toy Shop Boys, or just go away. I'm hoping for the latter.

What is a mandatory hit?
Littering the screen with bullets in a narrow corridor, and giving you no space to maneuver. This happened to me in the last few levels.
Quote
The things you are complaining about are/were very common among shooters back then.
I played a lot of shooters, and none of them are as badly designed as this. This is difficult by flawed design, so the player has no choice but to blame the *dumbass* developers for not testing the game.

Expect to hate a lot of games.
I've beaten 52 Pc-engine shooters (quality ones), and I've beaten the likes of Gaiares (1 credit clear), lightening force, bio-hazard battle, Musha, Granada, Area 88, Gradius 3, Axelay, R-type 3, biometal, and many others. I liked all these these games. I just don't support badly designed games that frustrate the player.

Agree with that, even for an oldschool shooter.

I really don't see what you mean.

This is quite common in oldschool shooters featuring walls.

Quite common even though I agree it's frustrating.

You mean the bombs? Of course you have to hit the target, it's aprt of the gameplay. The game makes you get near the bosses in order to be able to beat them. I don't see what's wrong with that.

Would be nice if you actually read my last post.

This has hit points. So no excuse for this. Elemental Master allows you to pass through walls. So do some shmups that grant temp shields.

Very common thing.
I don't know what kinda shooters you play, But I never came across a shooter that takes away your speed with damage.
Quote

Maybe, although I never came across one like this. But they should have been more generous with health, considering how frustrating the game is.

I picked up the light blue power up, the one that allows you to shoot homing waves. I could not hurt the boss head on, and I had to stay near the top screen so those stupid waves can hit his weak point. What the heck was that s**t? So stupid, considering I could hurt him head on with any other power up.

The games that i've beaten will make you cry brah.
Why? Because they suck? What does that statement even mean, really?
The stuff Dragon Saber does occasionally annoys me, but it's certainly nothing out of the ordinary and was relatively common in many types of games at the time. It's probably good that you haven't played many of those other games, either, given how much those annoyances seem to get to you. I'm sorry you don't like Dragon Saber. It must not be the right game for you. Play something else. I won't hold it against you if you do.
Title: Re: Dragon Saber....
Post by: ddd1234 on September 07, 2011, 07:47:21 PM
@Spenoza No, because they are difficult in a fair way and will not annoy you. Also, you won't have to deal with retarded issues that experienced Shmup developers would not even dare overlook. In other words, If you lose in a game, you will blame yourself for your incompetence, and not the developers.

I personally like the game. I have played far worse shooters than Dragon Saber. I don't even think Dragon Saber is a bad game, it's just a typical shooter from the late 80's early 90's. I don't blame a game that I have a hard time beating from design flaws. Yeah it affects gameplay, but there should still be a way to beat it. My qestion for the main poster is when did you first start playing shooters? I know I will probably not get a legit answer, but my guess is you started with bullet hell shooters that had super mega tiny hit boxes. Probably a Cave game or some other shooter like Giga Wing or Mars Matrix. Playing games like that and then going to the old school stuff makes people way less forgiving to older shooters.

But i was able to beat SSS on my 2nd go without losing more than 1 life.
That is some Rain Man shit right there. So what's the deal then? Dragon Saber's your Achille's heel? All the more reason for you to beat the game. All shmups have cheap parts in them somewhere. I think you're just so used to being badass, that you're mad that this one's got your goat ;)

Why are you so forceful about what games you've beaten? And why should we care? I suck at most games, but I play them because I like them. My success or lack of success should be largely irrelevant, and nobody here should care what games I can and cannot beat, or how I beat them. I may wish to brag, but nobody here should care. You seem so emphatic I have to wonder if there's an underlying self-esteem issue.
Edit: In retrospect, this reads more harshly than I think I intended. I apologize. Still, the meat of it is important enough I'm leaving it. Basically, I'm glad you're awesome at shooters. I like watching good shooter longplays on YouTube as I'm a shooter fan. The way you present your skills, however, is such an antithesis of humble that it kinda sounds like you demand we respect your skills, without you putting much else on the table to attempt to draw us in.
As for Dragon Saber, those cheap tricks you complain about can often be got around with a little memorization. Hell, R-type has some dead-ends I think are a little cheap until you've played the levels a few times, but it's still regarded as one of the best early shooters ever created. I think Dragon Saber is regarded more for the music than the gameplay anyway. It does have a rather nice soundtrack. I can't say I've ever thought of Namco as a company strong in the ways of shooters. Once Galaga become old hat they only paid the genre lip service.

So why would someone who has accounts on multiple sits with the same name register here under the totally random "ddd1234" name? Cause he's taking credit for another's acheivement.

Dragon Saber is not some haven of fatal flaws and bad programming, and this attitude you are taking toward it sounds mostly like just bitching and moaning. If you don't like it you don't like it, but blaming the programmers on a game like this is dumb. There are far more deserving titles where blaming the programmers are appropriate.
Really, Dragon Saber is just a development of Dragon Spirit, and Dragon Spirit proved very popular in the arcades, spawning versions on the NES and PCE, which also did well. Dragon Saber is not especially different save looking and sounding a lot better.

There is a reason why this series faded to black. There is a reason why Dragon Saber for PCE is cheap as dirt, considering it's one of the few ports of the game. I already listed all the flaws. This is a badly designed shooter. I don't know what else to say to get point across.

I disagree. I do not think it is a badly designed shooter. You are not the universal expert on what is and isn't good or bad game design. You don't like the game design. That doesn't make it bad game design. You are not the deciderer. Once you learn the difference between the two you will be a better person. Until then you are an arrogant whiner.

I'm not going to say this game is super awesome and flawless or anything, but I fail to see how its any worse than 50 other shooters from the same era with the same problems. Shit was hard back then, often totally unfair. For better or worse, thats just the way it was.

Yeah, but I've beaten Niki Niko Pun as well. The HARDEST game on the PCE.
Damn those seagulls! Oh and the elephants blocking your way with their trunks! I've played plenty of games (SFII) where the elephant trunks don't stop you at all! Crap ass programmers!!

Dragon Spirit series is OK. Nothing spectacular, but the games aren't seriously flawed by any stretch of the imagination.

I'm starting to think this originates from being a dragon and not a spaceship in the game.

Ha! And you call yourself a 'real gamer'. [-(
What kind of numb shit easily whips through some of the hardest shooters on the PCE and yet can't handle relatively tame stuff like Dragon Spirit, Dragon Saber, and Forgotten Worlds?

Just got the PCE version of Dragon Spirit today. It kicked my ass by level 3. I'll have to tackle it again after work.

It's a chore to play through these games man. I would die in R-type during the later stages, but still comeback to it for repeated play. It's not that I can't do it. I could probably do it, But the motivation is drained when the game f*cks with the player the wrong ways. Does this make any sense???

Damn I can't beat that anymore, I wasn't anymore 8 when Dragon Spirit came out.

I don't much like Dragon Saber either. It feels rushed and looks like poo. Then again, I wasn't a fan of the prequel either. Some of its flaws and resulting difficult details are definitely coder-induced. I swear, someone was smoking some happy shit when they were on this production. It's not without its merits but this definitely gets put into the "mundane" list despite its unique theme.
I'm gonna make a shooter where you play as a chicken, and fire eggs as your main weapon and giant piles of turd as your bomb weapon. Of course, since both come out of the back end, the chicken also has to fly backwards the whole game.

i beat the NES version on a rental when i was 9-10. The turbo version was a tough clear.

Pretty much all arcade games have quarter munching cheap spots. Dragon Saber likely wasn't rebalanced for the different sized play area in the HuCard version and may very well be even cheaper at times.
But some of the most celebrated "classic" games (like Ghouls 'n Ghosts and Ninja Gaiden NES) have cheap features and could be considered essentially broken. But people who love them accept them, warts and all and it's overcoming those unfair sections that make that makes them all the more rewarding to beat.
Of course personal preference will make some cheap games not worth the effort and although I haven't played through Dragon Saber, I can totally see how it could be frustrating as I'm not a fan of oversized player sprites.

I am trying to play through Dragon Spirit and so far have concluded that it is a bit unfair due to said sprite size.

Joe & Mac on the SNES. It was close to arcade perfect.
Rolf, that my dear is a big, BIG LIE :P. In fact they were completely different games (kinda like Toki on the mega drive compared to the arcade). They used recycled some of the arcade elements quite faithful, but beside of that the game was something completely different.

Anyone remember Dino Riders from bitd? Man, I ate that stuff up as a kid! It didn't hurt that my uncle at the time worked for Tyco and gave me a bunch of the toys from that line.
If only I had kept all that stuff...

Dino Riders were awesome! I wanted the toys as a kid, but they were too pricey. I have a VHS version of episode 1 that my parents bought me way back when. 1987 I think it's dated. Still watch it every so often. :P
Didn't it air during the "Marvel Action Hour" or whatever it was called along with Reboot and Robocop cartoons?

Lol. All I knew was the big T-Rex from the first stage looked like the one from the arcade's first stage T-Rex. That's all I cared about! :)

Lol, which made it instantly close to arcade perfect.
Do'h some math :P
that t-rex makes it 85% arcade perfect.
One of my favorite dinosaur games was f*ckin Evo on SNES
even though it had a ton of other crap too. That game was sweet.
It's imperative that I get Prehistoric Isle for the Neo Geo MVS one day before I depart this world! A game that combines dinosaurs and with a shooter is pure win. :)

Worth having if you can find a copy of PI2 for the mvs.
Dinosaur+Choplifter=for it's gameplay mechanics.
