Axelay, Bio-metal, Gradius 3, R-type 3, Parodius series FTW

Nevertheless, there are a few really good ones on the system.

Axelay will change your freakin' life.

I snagged Thunder Spirits the other day whilest thrifting.  Pretty sweet little shooter!  and I love Firepower 2000!  Excellent two player shootie!

My favorite is Macross: Scrambled Valkyrie. Even the "colors are for fagorts" MD/PCE fanboys usually respect this one. IMO the graphics are basically unequalled in 16-bit home consoles, except for maybe Pulstar. The sound is pretty great too. Gameplay is about B grade, probably too easy for a lot of people.

I don't have any explanation for how this game turned out so good. Most 16-bit anime licensed games aren't even playable, let alone good.

I haven't played many on the list, but I have a soft spot for UN Squadron/Area 88 (another decent anime-license game IMO).  I played through it several times over the span of a decade and a half and find it enjoyable every time.

on snes i only ever found myself enjoying space megaforce and axelay, seems like everything else i tried was just a little too off in one way or another.

I also consider this one of the nicest game on the system. especially graphically wise. it is also much better than the arcade pendant, because of the additional strategy feature, which adds some good fun to it.

I voted pop n twin bee, its a really good twin be game and it looks great and vibrant with the SNES color palette

I liked Phalanx. I noticed it isn't in this list. Biometal was ok too... but the US version had that horrible 2 Unlimited soundtrack.

I voted for:
Gradius III
UN Squadron (I need to get this one again - it was one of the first SNES titles I ever owned and I don't know what happened to it!)
Popn Twinbee
Others (I know I'll get flack for it but I really enjoy playing Raiden on the SNES.  And I really dig Thunder Spirits)

Maybe one of these days I'll see the light, but Axelay just doesn't do much for me.  Probably because I suck at it. :)

Considering the overall experience, it is still fun.

@SignOfZeta
Yeah, I despise easy shooters. But I will give Macross a chance.

Oh yeah, Phalanx. That's a good one. Much better than the crappy Darius/Gradius SFC games.

some dislike the slow/dumbed down SNES version of Gradius III.  Compared to the 'cade original it's pretty simple.

I still really enjoy Gradius III tho.

Yeah, still pretty enjoyable. I don't see how slowdown can ruin the whole game. It helps in some instances.

Yeah, it definitely makes it easier to get through Gradius III.

Anyway, my vote goes to Space Megaforce

NO love for flying hero. That game is pretty damn sweet for a cute em up. I definitely prefer it over Popn twinbee.

But there are some parts that remind me of Star Parodiar. Both came the same year...so don't know who to  accuse.

I haven't played a lot of the SFC/SNES shooters since I really wasn't into the genre when the system was current, but my favorite is Aero Fighters/Sonic Wings. I also have a soft spot in my heart for Super R-Type, crippling slowdown and all. Honestly, I think it's the music, it is fantastic.

I played Gradius 3 SNES for the first time ever today, and I kinda wish it wasn't released on this platform, or released later when programmers were better. It's a fantastic game, to be sure, but the slowdown is just constant if you are fully powered up. I wish it had been a Super/Arcade CD instead.

Konami seemed to have a real problem with slowdown, regardless of what platform they were programming for.

U.N. Squadron is my fave on the list by far. I still can't seem to beat it though.

If this Macross game is as good as some of you say then I gots to have it!. Can someone please just give me a copy for no good reason?  :P

Honestly I think Super R-Type has one of the most horrible and generic BGM of all SFC games.
But that counts for many other games on that system as well. Most musics on it have aged sooo badly.

Gradius crappy? But why?

Its not that Gradius is bad, its that the SNES game is boring and slow and non-descript and also slow.

Did I mention its slow?

I couldn't disagree with you more here, Tats. :)  I adore the SNES soundchip. Especially with the 1st generation releases like F-Zero and Pilotwings. Hearing the tune on the "Records" screen in F-Zero brings back the warm and fuzzies of friday nights after a ballgame with a friend staying the night so we could stay up "late" and game. ...such good times.

Its been a while since I played the game and I actually forgot how amazing that stage music is. That monosynth lead is incredible!

If I had one complaint about this game it would be the horrible box art which is...horrible. PC Engine definitely won that battle...twice even.

Yeah, I like the F-Zero stuff as well, especially Mute City is one of my favs ever. But unfortunatelly not everyone was on that same level and many games just have blunt and dull musics today. For me Super R-Type is one of 'em, using such generic sounds like ochestral chords and stuff, just turns me very off.
But sure there are others like Konami f.e. which did everything right most of the time. Axelay, Gradius, Akumajou dracula, the Goemon serie etc. is just splendid stuff.

Developers should have taken lessons from Compile. I still can't believe how much shit there is on screen in SMF with very little to no slowdown.

All the chatter about it in this thread makes me want to pick up Axelay.

I remember it being given away/advertised all the time on Nickelodeon game shows, so I assumed, back in the day, that it must not be very good.

Darius Twin was one me and my brother played a lot.

This thread reminded me... I just picked up Space Megaforce today, I need to go down and play it.  I fully expect the stages to be far too long, but I bet I'll still probably enjoy it.

Space Megaforce is Compile's worst game. You've been warned.

And yeah, the stages are way too long, except for one that is inexplicably short.

So never seen any screenshots in a magazine, on a packshot, by a friend, GF.. somewhere else? Did you eventually lived behind the moon at that time?

It's missing the Compile "magic."
Title: Re: Best Snes/SFC shooters???
Post by: Tatsujin on September 14, 2011, 11:59:34 PM
It has the compile magic, at least it is technically one of the most impressing piece of software on the system, which speaks for compile work. but uberlong and halfway dull levels kills a lot of that magic.

If they didn't had implemented those annyoing bonus stages (or just available as a separate omake game on the cart) and the general levels would have been cut back to 1/3 of their initially length, the game would have been quite very good.

and if they did those people would've then complained about it being too short.  Length was a big thing back then with shooters.  I remember people would always complain about games only having 6 levels and being too short back then.  I do feel they could've cut back the bonus stages as well, but they didn't and kept it that way probably to keep the length that they felt was adequate.   I remember Gunhed also having long ass levels.   Honestly they seem about the same length.

For Compiles worst shooter it has to go to Denin/Robo Aleste.
