Title: Ides of September freebie giveaway competition
Post by: hoobs88 on September 14, 2011, 05:48:33 PM
Today is my birthday and I'd like to celebrate by giving a gift (much like other generous members on the forum).
This freebie giveaway is a little different than just a raffle... I would like members to submit their high scores in Parasol Stars (my favorite hu card game) via photograph. If you are able to beat my high score by the end of the month, I will send you the freebie. If not, one consolation prize will be randomly drawn for a member who has submitted his/her (are there any females on this forum?) high score.

happy b-day hoobs! I don't have Parasol Star so I can't enter (plus I am not that great at puzzle games :-S) but still I have to say it's very awesome of you to do this contest! :)

For some reason the picture isn't loading up for me.  What game is on offer here?

Whatever it is, it would probably be easier for me to just buy it than get a high score on Parasol Stars (which I don't own and probably wouldn't be good at)

Happy Birthday!

I don't have Parasol Stars either, and I've already got Air Zonk, but that Ave Pad 6 sure looks sweet!  Too bad I won't be joining in the fun this time around...

If someone wants to borrow parasol stars for this let me know!

Awesome freebie!

Already have zonk but ave 6 pads are always good :P

Parasol Stars isn't a puzzle game...it is an action/platform game.

The freebie game is a loosey goosey Air Zonk (US version).

Happy Birthday!  Cool giveaways and a great idea on the competition.

Never owned or played Parasol Stars before but it's probably safe to say that a high score in the hundred millions is pretty darn high.  Good luck to everyone that attempts to beat that score.

My first two attempts gave me "Game Over" screens...  Third attempt only scored me 4,429,140. With what I'm guessing is a BAD (damn I suck?) rating? But my High score screen looks different from hoobs... Different version perhaps? I'm playing using the U.S. game. But yeah, Hundred+ million points is ALOT!

I am playing the US version. The score screen might look different since I finished the game rather than losing all of my lives. Post a screenshot anyways...if you want credit towards the consolation prize. I'm probably gonna give the freebie prize away to the highest posted score since mine seems unbeatable.

I honestly didn't enter because I have both of those prize items already, and don't want to be a hoarder...   not to mention I couldn't beat your score anyway.

I am out of practice, and I honestly hardly think I could beat the game now.

What I will do is play and not post my score, just to see how I compare with the master.

I'm sure others will no doubt beat my lousy score, but I did it for fun. Gave me a reason to really get into playing the game. If I get the opportunity to obtain a 6 button controller, all the better. Won't hold my breath on that though... I'll just pass out.

I played it some using an emulator this evening and I couldn't come close to even Mishran's score. :)  Of course I was playing with the keyboard...  I really ought to get a decent gamepad for the PC. :)  I may take another crack at it tomorrow.

It's to hard to say which I prefer more, the original Bubble Bobble or Parasol Stars (Bubble Bobble III) but I have played both so many times that I just play them to see how high of a score that I can get.

You have got to be the best player I've ever seen scores from, I'd love to see a playthrough from you at some point if you've got a video capture card.  Are you doing a 1CC on the entire game?  I haven't even broken a million yet but I do feel like I'm getting better; this game is addicting!!

Your parasol is not only your weapon, but your shield. It works great to protect against minor enemies. Most projectiles also bounce harmlessly off it. Learn to use it properly.

Game is definitely hard as f@ck. I've gotten frustrated and had to walk away from the game several times as I came close to tossing my duo out the window twice. I'm still shocked I beat the game twice, but still havent seen the "good" ending. I'm guessing it has to do with the hidden treasures through the door that appears after defeating the world bosses. I've gotten two or three at the most in my many play-throughs. It appears you have to collect 3 matching symbols in the levels before reaching the bosses to get the door. Can you clarify things for us hoobs? And how the hell are you guys getting those killer scores??? Beamer got double digit millions and he only got to the fourth world! I'm definitely missing something. ](*,)

Regardless, thanks a million hoobs for giving me a reason to truly discover this gem of a game. If not for your contest, It would still be collecting dust on my game shelf.

You have to collect 3 Star Elemental Tokens (or the Rainbow Bracelet which automatically makes a Star "Miracle") on the 8th Planet in order to get the key to Secret Road. The Bad Ending kinda clues you into that by showing a key and the 3 Star Elementals along with silhouettes of the enemies from the original Bubble Bobble game that appear on Secret Road that you will get a chance to see if you actually obtain the key.

You get huge point bonuses for killing multiple enemies at the same time which I try to capitalize on in the early stages (but it gets more difficult in the later stages). There are huge hidden caches of points that you can uncover if you throw bubbles or enemies across the screen. If you memorize these cache locations, you can rack up some serious points. You get an extra life for every million points and they add a million points to your score at the end of the game for each life you have. Another stupid trick that I discovered is that if you turn the game on then immediately reset the game (hold the run button down while pressing select) the game gives you a better random set of power ups and bonus prizes than if you just started playing the game after turning the power on. You can often get the Rainbow Necklace on the first planet if you use this trick...or maybe it is just a fluke.

I would record a playthrough of me playing the game if I had a video capture or camcorder but I don't have either.

You only receive the bonus points for remaining lives if you get the "True Ending".

1CC means 1 Credit Clear, or at least that's what I've been told.  It means that essentially you can clear the entire game on one credit (multiple lives on a credit is fine), without having to continue.  I'm guessing that's what you're doing since my score always seems to reset when I continue.

Drawing tonight, yay!  Gonna cross my fingers and hope I win, I've wanted an Avenue 6 for awhile!
Title: Re: Ides of September freebie giveaway competition
Post by: hoobs88 on October 02, 2011, 01:58:46 PM
In that case, all of my scores are 1CC (no continues). Your score does reset to zero when you continue. If you continue on the final boss of the game, even though you will be starting with zero points, you can get a huge score just for defeating him and receive all the bonus points for remaining lives and remaining continues. That clearly wasn't the case for me as I had 15 lives remaining and 99 continues.

It looks like the Avenue 6 pad has more interest than the Air Zonk game. Should I give the winner a choice between the 2 and the remaining item goes as the consolation?

If by winner, you mean highest score of all entrants. I don't think anyone's actually going to surpass your borderline-disturbing score of the stratosphere!

Also, if that's the case, how much longer do we have to enter? I might be able to squeeze in one or two more games after my workout.

Bad news, I plugged it in and went to play some SF2. All the buttons worked fine except for button 1. :-s It wasn't registering with button presses and it felt odd when pressed. I opened up the controller figuring the membrane was dirty or the contacts could be tarnished. Well, it was neither. When I pulled the board away from the front of the pad, all the membranes came out with it except for the button 1 pad. It was completely torn from the button membrane. I don't think it can be fixed except with a replacement membrane which I don't have. Either way, thanks alot regardless hoobs. You meant well, but it just wasn't meant to be I guess. I flipped the membrane around so it was under button 4. I can still use it as a 2 button pad anyway, so all isn't lost. :(

That's really weird since I tested the pad (in 2 button mode) before I shipped it. If anything, I might have suspected buttons 3-6 to not work since I didn't test it with any 6 button games. Are the membranes interchangeable? I'll try to send you a spare membrane if they are.

Button 1, 2, 5, and 6 are connected to a 4 button membrane. Buttons 3 and 4 is connected to a 4 button membrane that was cut in half to fit behind the buttons. Perhaps it was still in place when you had it and got knocked loose in the mail. The 1 and 2 buttons are the most used on the pads, so it makes sense that 1 is the busted button. I can still use 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 buttons buttons now so if mortal kombat is ever ported over to the Turbob, I'll be set!  :P

If I can find another 6 button pad for you Mish, I might like that one since it'd be perfect to wire up for an arcade stick. :P

I was actually gonna look into tinkering with it to see if I can fix it. Perhaps cut out the torn spot and somehow adhere a good pad in its place. I still have my turbopad that is busted, perhaps I can sacrifice it to fix a still good one. It's a Hori FC PC pad and was very looking forward to having it. I'll get it working.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
don't tear apart a pce pad for that, use one of these

it's more expensive, yes, but it will work with just about any console you want, if you do it right

Just a minor update hoobs, I was able to mend the rubber pad with some epoxy around the tear at work last night. :-$ It is likely a temporary fix, but placed the pad under the V button since it isn't abused like the I button. :P I stress tested it early this morning with some SF2 goodness and it held up well.
