Title: New member Introduction Thread
Post by: Senshi on September 28, 2011, 11:17:44 AM
Most internet forums I visit have these and I think its a good thing. Most new members that find there way here post an introduction post but place it wherever because "they didn't see where they should do this". Can we have an official "introduce yourself" section? or even a pinned topic? something so it doesn't get put in random places.

Yes this would have been good to have when I joined a year ago, Infact my 1 year just passed a few weeks ago.

I searched for a while for such a thread before making my own intro thread, just to make sure I wouldn't look like a doofus for missing it.

The intro thread for real men is right here.

Okay. Looks like I finally found the Intro thread or one of them at least.
Okay. So, I have a Turbo Duo, 58 HuCards, 7 Turbo-CD's, 9 Super CD's a few other odds and ends and I've been collecting on and off since 1993. I started in late 1990 to early 1991 with a brand new TG16 that I payed about $160.00 for. I chose it because it seemed to be more bang for the buck over Sega's entry into the 16-bit market. I settled on Vigilante for my free mail order game because I loved playing it at the arcade.
I only succeeded in collecting a few more games for that console before selling it off. I missed it shortly afterward and as soon as the Duo came out, I worked my butt, off to save up for it. I still have the box and instructions as well as some of the boxes to my games.
After being dormant for a while, I've decided to get my old Duo out and start collecting again so, here I am.
If anyone still wants to give me the noob test then, have at it. I'm game.
-Shrap

Welcome Shrapnoid! Nice collection you got there. Need more games!!! :) How is your Duo working? Most of em have issues at this point, that can be repaired right here by people in this forum.

Thanks. It's good to be here. I can't believe how big this place has gotten. I'm really impressed. Yes. I do indeed need more games and I wont be satisfied until I have every single U.S. game in mint to near mint condition w/manuals, sleeves, perfect labels, boxes and all.
I'm thinking about even picking up additional system variants and some PC-Engine games as well.
I miss it all. I miss it all so, much. I even miss walking up and down the aisles, impatiently, trying to side which game or games to get on a limited amount of cash!
Such a bitter-sweet feeling.
EDIT: Ooops! Almost forgot. My Duo is doing pretty good for it's age and I baby her a lot more than any other console I have. Early on, a few days after I picker her up, I did a really, really, REALLY stupid thing. I set it on the carpet when I played it and kept wandering why the CD games would quit spinning. I also stored it under the slot of a desk or something, directly on the carpet one day before going to work in order to hide it from some destructive nephews that were supposed to visit that day.
It wasn't until a lady at T.T.I. warned me about the whole static electricity erasing RAM story that I began to keep every piece of hardware and software under my roof away from carpet, clothing and etc.
Still there was some kind of damage done. The CD-ROM's accessing became slower and sometimes it would even get stuck when switching between tracks at which point I had to tap the console with my finger to get it going again.
Since I've got it hooked back up, the only problems I've had are with A/V out, causing the sound to fade in and out but, I figure that that could just be dust on the input jack and plugs.
The only other problem with it is that it refuses to play replicated CD's because the last time I had it out, I tried cleaning the lens with a soft cloth because my lens-cleaning CD was warn out. I guess I must've scratched it a little without knowing it. Depending on where you stand when it comes to replication, I guess some may see that as a good thing since it still plays normal games just fine.
It may not be tiptop but, it's my baby.

Welcome Shrapniod! The issues you have with the Duo are pretty common. There are folks here that can mod your console to add composite plugs to bypass the original cable to fix the intermittent sound issue. Also, folks here can replace the lens, but I have a PC Engine Duo with a new lens and it STILL doesn't like to read burned CDs. (It reads real discs fine though) That's not a deal breaker to me though. :)
Good luck getting everything complete. Be prepared to pay out the wazoo! Maybe you'll come to your senses, get your Duo region modded and buy PC Engine versions of games that aren't text heavy (often for a fraction of the cost), like us real fans. :P

Thanks again for the welcome.
Mod my Duo? I-I just can't do that. I know it's an inanimate object, just a material item but, I just can't bear the thought of customizing it. It's a sentimental thing. I've been through a lot with that console. I know it's not right to *love* a machine but, I do have a certain measure of love for that one in particular above all of my consoles. It's the queen of my collection and the others are just...uh...um...plain ol' harem girls by comparison if that makes any sense.
I'm glad that you brought up the composite video mod though because I had an idea for that recently after reading about others doing A/V upgrades.
I don't truly expect it to work but, I like to experiment and try to find ways to make mods work as cheap as possible so, I started doing a few searches on different types of RCA-based plugs and adapters and I found out that there is a composite adapter plug with a 3.5mm plug on the other end and that lead me to wondering...
Here's a pic to show the idea. Maybe someone who understands this stuff better than me can tell me whether or not this will work and save me a trip to RadioShack.

When I found out Demon is like the ONLY other Turbo fan I know in a company of 3,000 employees (and that's just our site) I had to make him join. For years he's been a HuCard gamer and I'm telling him to get a DUO-R and jump on some CD games. I even set him up with a printout of the Zonk shades in his cube for good measure. *fist to chest* Represent!

Well, I did a bit of rifling through some old threads, and decided it was best for me to go ahead and actually introduce myself for a change. :D
As indicated by my first post here (on the "PC Engine for sale/wanted" section) I don't currently own a Turbografx/PC Engine. It wasn't until very recently I actually decided I wanted one. I've only been really into the retro gaming for a few months now, though I've been a gamer since the 32/64-bit era (I was born right smack in the middle of the 16-bit era, IE too young to appreciate it.) I own an Xbox 360, a Wii, PS1, N64, and an SNES, but I've recently added to my retro console ranks with an NES, Master System, Genesis, and an Atari 2600. I'm hoping to get a PC Engine soon, so I can start "shootin'-it-up" (shmupping? lol).
For about as long as I've been into video gaming, I've been a pretty die-hard Nintendo fan, and in my early days, I was quite prejudice against Sega/Playstation/etc. Recently, however, I've been more accommodating to other game developers, as Nintendo's most recent offerings have been somewhat disappointing as compared to the Xbox 360. All that being said, I won't go around waving a "Nintendo is superior" flag like a herpaderp.
There's a bunch more I could say, a la reasons I want to get into NEC consoles, but I mainly just wanted to introduce myself so you guys don't think I'm just on here just to buy a PC Engine. :D

RBT, you have chosen wisely. The CoreGrafx = perfect introduction to the wonderful world of PCE :)

Damn, PC-FX? Now the "newbies" are making me feel bad. I need to re-purchase a PC-FX. Just kidding about the "newbie" comment, since you clearly have a solid footing in the PCE world :)
Un...less I'm misunderstanding, it's customary for me to introduce myself, I guess?

You realize that you are now obligated to record a PCE-centric tune on your guitar, right? Well, no, but you should strongly consider it. Personally, I would love any chiptune rendered on a guitar.
No pressure, of course. Just have fun playing PCE/TG-16. 8)
Also, if you have a few $$$$ to burn (or a fan of shoot-em-ups), pick up God Panic (http://www.pcengine.co.uk/HTML_Games/God_Panic.htm) for an homage of Stairway to Heaven. Also, I'm sure you know about Led Zeppelin and the artists they "borrowed" ideas from (http://vimeo.com/14912890), yes?
Otherwise, I can share an mp3 of the God Panic track. It isn't amazing, but it is a bonafide PCE~Zeppelin connection. How many of those connections exist, on any platform? :-k

Even though you are just a little child, we still welcome you. I'm sure there are particular games you are interested in playing (assuming you haven't tried some via emulation already). Whilst waiting for the real hardware, I think it is well-worth plunking down a few dollars to play Dynastic Hero or Bonk 3 on Wii VC, for example.
Also, I'm sure you know this, but there are plenty of cheap titles that are tons of fun, should $$$ be an issue.

Indeed. Indeed.
Don't let the other folks hear this, but I would get PCE > NES > Genesis before worrying about SMS and Atari.
Actually, NES/Famicom has the best friggin' library in the universe. So many wonderful games to explore.
I've tried the touch controls on the iPhone emulation and although it works, I never feel "at ease" when playing. It stresses me out.

I totally agree with you about the NES games, of which I have 32, more than any other console I own. The games are mostly cheap, the more expensive ones costing about as much as a PCE game. Some of the Famicom games can cost you an arm and a leg, unless you can find pirate versions (which I did! :D)
So far, though, the NES and the Genny have been my favorites. Sooo many good games for the Genesis! I'm currently trying to get into the Thunder Force series (I have TFII, but I want III and ESPECIALLY "Lightening" Force!)
The SMS suffers from having a relatively small library, but they have enough "holy grails" for me to make it worth collecting for. Plus, the console itself is teh sex.
Atari suffers from the games being...well...small. Asteroids is great. Defender is great. Galaxian is awesome, as are Phoenix and Demon Attack. The many shmups on the system are loads of fun...just for about 5 minutes. Occasionally I'll sit for a good hour or two racking up a high score on Asteroids, though...
As for the touch controls, they're doable considering every game I own is either a shmup, Mortal Kombat, or Sonic the Hedgehog, but I definitely get what you mean. Raiden is a BITCH to play with the touch controls...thank god for save states. -_-

Greetings all! Name's Austin and I found this place while googling for a video fix for the Turbo Express :D
I'm no stranger to retro gaming but I am a bit of a newbie to the TurboGrafx 16 and related consoles. I've heard about it for years but it was never high on my priority list(always been an NES kid) until recently. I finally managed to track one down for the right price about four months ago and I have completely fallen in love with this system! So much so that I've already acquired a second one and a Turbo Express, LOL. It's safe to say that this machine has jumped up in rank quite a few spots on my list of favorite consoles, and I'm sure it will only continue to climb higher as I acquire a CD ad on and/or a Turbo duo!
My collection is pretty small right now, consisting of only a handful of games, but I hope to build it up over the next few months with the help of this place! Games are pretty tough to find around these parts so I feel very fortunate to have what I have. Looking forward to jumping into some discussions, learning more about this fantastic line of systems and making new friends! :D

Hello,
A couple of you guys have probably seen me pop here and there in this forum. However I thought i should introduce myself properly. I am a 26 year old guy who knows probably way too much about video games for his own good. Unfortunately I have only experienced how awesome the PC engine is through emulation so far but I am working on getting me a console with all the bells and whistles at the moment. I found out about this awesome console through a friend. This whole thing has actually sparked a new found interest in old school consoles for me. Here is to hoping i get to make some good friends around here.

Hey there,
I'm Joel and I come from some place far away. I recently decided to get into PC Engine after learning about the Sega arcade ports that they had (specifically After Burner which is one of my favorite games of all time) thanks to a guy named John Redmond, his friend Daryl, and a YouTube show they have called Game Bag. I bought a modded Turbografx-16 from another forum along with the fantastically underwhelming Keith Courage and the fun and playable Bomberman. After that I went on a game crazy bender and ordered a few more titles. I have these ones on the way, all of them are PC Engine versions since, hell, they are cheaper (and some only available in that format)
Space Harrier After Burner Doraemon (Cratermaze) PC Genjin Genpei Tomaden Devil Crash Dragon Spirit Valkyrie no Densetsu
I am most excited for Devil Crash which was one of my favorite for the Genesis.
I mostly have been using this forum for educational purposes (as well as shopping, Valkyrie is being sold to me by a member here) but I thought I'd introduce myself so I don't look like some suspiciously quiet spam bot.
So hey.
Oh and I also bought Bloody Wolf...which rules.

I personally think that the PCE/TG-16 version of Devil Crash is superior to the Genny version (Dragon's Fury), but I still like the Genny version. The soundtrack is killer, of course (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcg0.png)
I think the port of Space Harrier is a blast to play. No, it isn't perfect, but there's something really nice of the PCE version. Hopefully you'll like it to.
I won't comment on the rest of the games, but suffice it to say you have a decent library to begin your PCE adventure. (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/cooks_transb.gif)

I have to agree so far on Devil Crash. I think the music sounds better for one thing, the skeleton laughing actually sounds like...well, I guess what a skeleton laughing should sound like. The bonus stages are nice too; I'm not really missing the snake coming out of the guys mouth, that was always a pain in the ass.
Space Harrier is a great port, and After Burner II is really impressive as well. Overall it has been a fun experience so far. I feel like I'm missing a lot sticking to HuCards, but there seem to be a lot of HuCards as well.

*Ahem* (stands) My name is Evilplayground, and I am a retro game addict. I've been directed to this great site by a fellow member and collector, Sparky. My NEC collection is teenie tiny as I've only just begun, but have a few thousand games ranging from RCA Studio II to PS3.
I found myself in a dusty thrift store off the beaten path one day and happened upon a boxed, seemingly complete Core Grafx machine in its original box. Price tag; only $5. SOLD. I was giddy with my new find and took it home to inspect. Of course, I've never had much luck in these matters and this occasion in particular proved the same. It was 'retrofitted' with some bizarre PAL type modification and was utterly useless. Then I looked at the controllers, where I noticed these weren't first party pads, oh no, they were something different entirely. They look legit from a quick glance, but one might spot the little red switch on the side of these things along with the main logo being ever so slightly....wrong.
Dear ole Sparky assured me he could save my machine and my sanity and has since sent it for servicing to one of you fine fellows. I have yet to see the final product, but man oh man, am I excited!
So, anyway, I hope to meet more enthusiasts and learn a great deal more on this unique manufacturer and all it has to offer.

There is no shame in focusing on the HuCARDS until you feel like you picked all the low-hanging fruit. (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcds.png)

Hey everyone, I'm new too.
I originally got a TG16 at launch, had a Duo in college, and recently have decided to return to this awesome machine. I went with a TG16 with the CD add on this time. I always wanted the CD add on as a kid, so it was a nostalgic decision. I've modded it with BlueBMW's mod board (thanks man!) and have an arcade card pro on its way to let me dive into super and arcade goodness.
I'm currently playing through Ys and trying to 1cc Aero Blasters.
I'm also big into the Neo Geo, and like to write my own games in my spare time as well.
So far this board is nice, seems like a good group.

Hello. I just made my first posts today after having been a member of the forums for a few months. Ive always been interested in PC Engine but never really got myself a system. I am now activly looking for a Core Grafx and have my eyes set on a couple of them which might become a purchase within a week.
My dream would be to purchase a modded and refurbished DUO-R from doujindance on ebay. Hopefully he keeps the systems coming like he has for years, for at least 6 months more, and ill be one of his customers. The way he cleans off the yellowing, replaces the laser unit and reinforces the I/O ports makes him my only choice, untill someone can do the same thing!
I have collected games, as a gamer, for over 20 years, and i enjoy most genre's except FPS's which i dislike like no other genre. Third person works fine though. My favourite system is 3DO, but i really dont have any "fanboy-syndrom" towards any system, of which i own 10ish different ones. The PC Engine seems like the next step when it comes to more specifically japanese style games, such as shootem ups, platform titles, puzzles and bomberman type games.
Ive actually picked up two games so far, without a way of playing them, Street fighter 2, and a dodgeball game ive already forgotten the name of, made by Naxat soft, along with the Hori Fighting Stick PC. Now all i need is a bloody system to play them...
So here i am!

Welcome aboard, Jacob or Wilhelm. Unless you really have your heart set on getting a CG, I'd save your pennies for a Duo-R/X (or Duo with cap job); there's lots of great HuCARD titles, but there's a ton of great CD titles too.

My name is neither Jacob or Wilhelm so i dont understand at all what you are refering to. But the plan is to get a duo-r or rx eventually, but for now cd-titles will have to wait.

It was pointed out to me yesterday that I haven't introduced myself to the members of PCEngineFX. So I'm here to do so now...
My usual forum name is FiftyQuid. I found this forum through CGCC and really like the dedication to information here. The repair guides are intense and the dedication videos to NEC damn near made me tear up.
I'm just another collector. My favourite system as a kid (16 years old) was the TG-16. After that was the Genesis, and NES. I'm looking at collecting TG-16 games first, but I'd also like to grab those 'gems' from the Genesis and NES that I really enjoyed playing (eg. Gun.Smoke, Blaster Master, Mega Man, etcetera). Glad to be here and I hope to contribute as much as I can.

I'm new to the forum.... well lurked for a long time.... Used this site for inspiration to fix a dead tgcd unit... picked up a broken unit with stuck gears and no spin/laser activity... blew all the cat hair outta it.. unstuck the gear.. cleaned the lens and it came to life. I got a cd base unit on the way and got a japan system card 3.0 so a chopsado is in my future. I think I have read about every topic on the forums. This place has it all! Anyway back in the 90s i picked up a new tg16 near the end of its lifespan and I have loved it ever since.

Hello.
Been lurking here awhile and finally made an account. I'm usually alternating between here, reading nesdev.parodius or posting on Sprites Mind. I've been working on a game project for the Sega Genesis, Goplanes, http://gendev.spritesmind.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1090.
Whenever I'm done with Goplanes, I'm very interested in doing something for the TG16. I don't know what yet, and I don't know when, but I frequently think about it so it'll happen sooner or later. I'm disappointed that there's not a lot of TG16 game development going on. Or maybe I'm just not finding the right places.
Anyway! Glad to be here.

Long time fan here, just getting back in. I used to be on turbo list but left and now it seems to have died. :( anyway I'm planning on S-Video mod for my TG-16 and checking the CD for bad caps. I also have an extra CD base and hoping to pick up a CD unit to make it a spare set
My collection consists: Two TG-16 units (one with no RF shield for modding) Two CD base units one CD-ROM unit one CD system carry case one TurboBooster Plus Two Turbo Tap four Turbo Sticks (got em cheap off Radio Shack when they briefly offered old game stuff) loads of Turbo Pads (some works, some for parts or repair) controller extension cable Duo controller adapter (if I ever get a Duo) and a total of 49 unique games, all USA games.
Anyway Hi from Michigan, USA
