Welcome to another year of Secret Santa! Here's the rules, more or less the same as last year:
1. If you have troubles following through in a timely manner, please don't waste everyone's time; do us all a favor and refrain from signing up. 2. Signups will run from now 'til November 1st, at which time I'll match y'all up and send out your intended recipient's wish list. 3. Send me your name, shipping address, and a list of at least a half dozen games (ideally PCE related) that you'd like to receive, including condition preference. Keep in mind that the more options your Santa has, the better the chances of him (or her) finding a good deal in the time allotted. 4. Value of your gift(s) should be in the $20-30 range - real value and not bloated OMG R@R3!! eBay value. 5. Gifts shall be mailed by December 10th at the latest, but not too early either (this ain't Secret Thanksgiving Pilgrim). If for some reason you won't be able to meet that time frame, please let me know so that alternate plans can be made and nobody ends up crying in their eggnog. 6. This bears repeating: don't sign up if you won't follow through. Failure to hold up your end of the bargain will result in shunning, mockery, hopefully forum banishment, and I just might track you down and let the air out of your tires. 7. Most importantly, have fun. This ain't supposed to be work.
For extra holiday cheer, a random participant will be selected to receive Magicoal in their stocking and one of Mr. Nanto's Turbo Legacy Posters (http://www.cafepress.com/pcenginefx.260707543) under their tree. If any of you already has or just doesn't want one or both of these items, please add a note in your wish list and I'll draw another name out o' the hat.
Also, let me know if you don't want to shop for me since it won't exactly be secret.

I was thinking, are we each going to save the gifts we receive and open them on the same day, or are people supposed to rip into it the moment it arrives? Or does it not even matter? (I'm waiting, if it's okay!)

yeah that's really up to the person I think some of us would wait and some of us would rather open it and play sooner but we would all take pictures and show everyone what we got at the end tho

yeah, I'd like to wait. I meant to last year, but i mistook my gift for another package, and was like "oh." maybe we should gift wrap them inside the shipping material?

A couple updates to the first post:
1) If for some reason you don't want the coal or the poster, let me know and I'll select another winner. 2) It takes some of the fun out of it, so let me know if you'd rather not be a non-secret Santa for me.

On the international topic - great idea; Do we know who is not in the U.S./Canada? Perhaps add location to each name?
Title: Re: Secret Santa 2011
Post by: Necromancer on October 07, 2011, 04:00:55 AM
I'd rather not treat international peeps like second class citizens and make them feel guilty for costing a bit extra for shipping. It's not all that much more (see below), and remember that they'll be incurring similar cost to ship their package to you. To offset the few extra bucks in shipping, stick close to the low end of the given price range, keep the weight down with a single pricier game instead of a group of cheapies, or have it shipped directly from whoever you're buying it from (from someone like hit-japan, it's the same price to have it shipped to Europe as it is to have it shipped to the US).
Two games in a padded envelope (~8oz) is $2.56 to ship domestically, $3.54 to have a moose deliver it up in the great white north, and $7.81 to send to most places outside NA. Is a single Abe really that big of a deal?

I don't think its the cost issue as much as people don't want to deal with customs forms etc.

Really? The customs form is nothing but the shipping name/address, return name/address, a short description of the contents, and your signature. It takes a minute tops and can even be filled in online.

Exactly. I don't understand why people always have such an issue with this either.

I have no problems with international shipping... hell, the cost of MSR's pre-order includes shipping to anywhere in the world.

I used to bring my International shipments to the Post Office and they don't do delivery confirmation (such a tragedy) when you do 1st Class...I use online shipping now which includes free delivery confirmation and has easy to fill out customs forms.

The hardest part of this is going to be compiling a list of games, one of which I'd hope to receive, and then not buy any of them in the interim!
When we say the value of our wishlist items should be $20-30, doesn't that mean some of them will end up costing the buyer the higher, bloated Ebay price?

Title: Re: Secret Santa 2011
Post by: allyourblood on October 07, 2011, 02:14:29 PM
Nor do I. I just got confused by the wording. I didn't want to get called out for possibly spending more than the 20-30 dollar limit, or causing someone else to have to spend more than they originally budgeted. Sometimes that sort of thing is frowned upon.

I won't be sending mine out until sometime next week. :( One of the games I received from Japan was not what I had ordered. So I've had to order another one which will be here next week.
On another note, I received my Secret Santa gift over the weekend. I've been expecting a number of packages in the mail lately and this one was not labeled on the outside that it was the Secret Santa box.
So I opened it. The games didn't have any wrapping paper on so when I took them out of the box I was like "I didn't order these games..."
Then it clicked. They were games on my Secret Santa list! D'oh! I would have waited until Christmas to open it. I'll post pics soon.
Once I stop playing these games... :D

No, no stickers. Though there is a game catalog pamphlet for a few other Konami shooters: Gradius, Salamander, and Parodius. And that's pretty neat. When I got Gradius II a few months back it came with stickers.

Post by: Arkhan on December 04, 2011, 03:54:50 AM
I would be sending out tomorrow, but the f*ckface mailman didn't even knock when delivering the box of goods.
He threw that f*ckin slip up saying COME GET IT MONDAY and sped off in his truck. I was making a sandwich in the kitchen, heard ruffling followed by my mailbox creaking. Then as I walk over to it I hear VROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM.
That's the second time he's done that. So, a certain postal worker is going to get bitched at when I go tomorrow.
Interference with OBEY is a serious probrem.

They seem to take forever with the actual packaging of stuff. That's why I pay for EMS. They get that crap out asap. The other stuff they end up doofing around all week.
then they mail you white Sega Saturns instead of turbobgames and ask you to front the shipping (refund upon receipt!)
THEN I TELL THEM TO PISS OFF AND NOW I GET TO KEEP THE SATURN AND MY TURBOBGAMES ARRIVED.
suck it, suckers! I hope they don't turn into Falling Junk and start sucking across the board.

When the package showed up, I wasn't sure what it was at first. When it hit me, I ran to my wife and had her open it without letting me see it, in case the gift wasn't wrapped. Turns out they (!) were, so I fondled them for a few minutes, my mind racing at the possibilities, before I finally put them under the tree.

My pcfx Secret Santler delivered an AWESOME OBEY 3 pack! R-Type, Dungeon Explorer, and Xak 1&2!! I will have to do some research to figure out who this Santa could be- Parma Heights, OH.... hmmmmm.
(http://img822.imageshack.us/img822/326/img20111225093118.jpg) Also, a secret santa of another retro kind delivered the other Saturn & OBEY goodness!! Shinobi Legions, Three Dirty Dwarves, and Silent Debuggers!!!
Whoever you are, thank you so much! So much time passed that I completely forgot what I even put on my list. These were both just a really tremendous surprise. Haven't had a chance to play them yet, but I definitely will very soon. Thanks again, sincerely! Super-generous of you!

Awesome! I've been wanting to get Raiden again for the TG16 - I've got it for the PSX and Genesis and it's lots of fun on the PSX (decent on the Genny). Time Cruise is also a really good pinball game. It's too bad it had the Crush games for competition because it's still head and shoulders above most other console pinball games, IMO.

My Secret Santa is from Ohio...???
Okay, I did some snooping with the Search function and I know for sure that Arkhan is from Ohio, and I think also Rover. The gifts were wrapped pretty carefully, and Arkhan is all crazy, what with all the zany ALL CAPS TYPING and speaking in foreign tongues, so that doesn't seem his style. But then again, maybe he's secretly a gentle and tender soul who wraps presents all careful-like while sipping Chamomile tea.
Or maybe it's Rover. I sent him a raffle item once, I think... (checking my e-mails and PMs now...)... Nope that's not it.
Okay, checked the address and it's near Cleveland, so I'm gonna say it's Arkhan. Did I guess it right?!

Very sneaky. You know what's funny? I thought it might be you at first (as in, a week ago or so), because a lot of people were piping in and mentioning that their stuff had arrived. When mine still hadn't, I kept popping in the thread and seeing who was still shipping out around that time, which you were. But after searching the forums and not finding any posts relating you to Ohio, I guess I sort of forgot.
Thanks so much for the games! It's beyond generous of you, really. I've been wanting both games for a while, but especially Raiden, and that game is tough to find for a "fair" price. That was one of the games I just sorta threw on my list as a "I know I'm not really gonna get it but I'll still toss it out there just in case"-type thing. So anyway, thanks again!
And Necromancer, you're tops for organizing the whole thing. This type of thing is never exactly easy, and you really went out of your way to make sure everyone was kept in the loop, even during the outage. The additional PM updates and passed-along info from SS to recipients (like the cookie thing) is really appreciated. Thanks very much.
Can't wait for next year to do this again. That was a lot of fun.

Gotzendiener and Bomberman 94, direct from Robot Hell - Midwest Annex!
I know mine are from Necromancer, but I want to say that he went above and beyond to make this a great Christmas for me. He told me that my Santa wasn't going to be able to ship my games in time for Christmas, so instead he sent the games out of his own collection so that I'd get them in time for Christmas.
Necro, if you're ever in Colorado Springs I'll buy ya a Colorado brew!

Hey, there was candy in there when I shipped it! :P
Wish I could'a sent more, Mathius. Like SMF, I had a deal fall through on another game and I ended up kinda substituting. Hope you enjoy, though. Merry Christmas, buddy!
And Happy New Year to everyone. I think 2012 is gonna be Year of the PCE/TG16.
...for some reason.

Magicoal showed up Saturday, so it'll be going out today to one of you lucky Santas. Better late than never, eh?
I received some unexpected and very much appreciated coal in my mailbox this afternoon! Coal of the Magi variety. :D Thanks so much, Necromancer! I'm going to pop it in now and check it out!

Wow, clearly some of you guys went way above the $25-$30 limit. Where did you guys shop for these?
I got Ark's gift at game of japan since it was the cheapest I could find but now I feel bad for only giving one game when everyone else is getting 2 or 3. I still don't know who my SS was...

I only went over by a smidge: one game came from Amazon ($15), one from Bimmer for cheap ($8), and one as part of a lot for cheap ($10). Sometimes sweet deals can be found (the bigger the list, the easier it is), but sometimes you have to settle for a merely fair deal when you can't wait.
Did your package come from Tennessee and use old caps as packing peanuts?

I think I spent total $50 something for the games I got. 1 game I paid $18 for and the other I got a lotof 7 games for $33. I got some games I needed and snagged SS gifts. Now to go thru and see if I have doubles. Or maybe ill hol on to the dubs till next SS time and giv them all away if so need be.

Some of the stuff I had already as a duplicates, some of the other stuff I worked out a trade for. So I really cant say how much on spent on my person's stuff since I really didn't shell out any cash.
People always go overboard... I even felt that I didnt really do enough for my person... just one game and some other random fru fru. Granted the game was boxed... but it wasn't all that rare or anything...

Old caps are disposed of in accordance to the hazardous waste protocols here in Tennessee... that said I use non-biodegradable bubble wrap on my packages. :(
Need any more hints MG?

That is to say, they're summarily deposited in the nearest toilet or open storm drain.
Or have I been doing it wrong this whole time?

I thought it was a cap of $35, so I might have gone over a bit. I'm assuming that meant before postage was factored in right?
One game I got off eBay for about $25, the other game I found in a local shop for $10 and didn't realize it was pseudo rare but still on my guy's list. Then I had some random things and kids toys that I threw in for extra measure and wrapped and sent that sucker off.
True Story: With the first copy of the game I bought off eBay from a seller, he couldn't find it so he refunded my money and sent me China Warrior as an apology.
