Title: Custom Covers
Post by: tru on October 26, 2011, 09:54:26 AM
I made about 30 or so translated custom covers back in 2002-03 (yes, I know my name on there isn't the best thing, but I didn't want people saying it was theirs)... I know there are some custom covers out there... who has done some custom covers... and feel like sharing?

Here is one of my better ones of the time:

Wow, literal translations make for sucky English game titles. Oh well...

@spenoza - Yeah, literal translations can be bad... you can't please everyone though...

Here are a couple more I did, also some for the PC-FX...

not the best one... pretty sure this was one of my first ones:

Honesty: these don't look very good.* Normally I'm not a negative enough person to just chime in and rag on somebody, but you signing your name kind of tipped me over the edge.

*Actually, they are very bad. :(

Yeah, I stated that in my opening post... I made these in 2002-03

:( I didn't think they were that bad... not the best work in the world, but I thought it looked better than a 2 year old...

I don't mind people negatively criticising anything I do... but usually there is some kind of constructive criticism... otherwise, it is really pointless to make a negative comment as there is nothing said that can be improved upon... and yes, as stated in my first post, if you read it, I stated putting my name on it wasn't the best thing...  If all you ever heard was that you are not good enough and nothing was stated to improve upon, then you would never be good enough because you wouldn't know what you did wrong...

But thanks for your comment anyway... negative or positive, at least you felt compelled enough to give negative feedback...

I like 'em. And you know what else? I like how wacky Japanese is when it's translated into English. It makes me Super Terrific Happy Donkey...POW!

That's seems unnecessarily harsh. I agree about not signing your name on it (though I don't think its that big a deal) and some of the fonts I'm not wild about. I do really like the Strider one though! Anyway, thanks for sharing these! :)

This is a nice idea, even if they are a bit overly Photoshoppy (someone loves bevels and drop shadow a wee bit too much!)
It would be great to do this with high quality scans, trying to match the feel of the original fonts as closely as possible.

And I thought that one was one of my worst ones... glad you like it!

Yeah, I see that now that you point it out... I know on some of them, the bevel and drop shadows were used to mainly "hide" the  edited parts that didn't look so hot... and others, well.. because at the time, I thought they looked cool... I will try my have at some others and see what I can do with them... maybe I can make my own fonts to use so that they match the originals a little better than just using what I "felt at the time" was a good font to use...

I also see what you mean about photoshoppy... I will try and make the newer ones look more natural...

Yeah, sometimes you have to reduce the quality of the new bits to make them look right, blurring and fading slightly to match.
