Best place I've found local to play arcade games is my garage.... seems to be the only place with a plugged in cabinet!

The topic is "weird places" not "best places"

like, why is Metal Slug 5 in a place designed for 6 year olds to flail around in?

It's kinda like that time I found Black Tiger in a bar full of hillbillies.

Haha It happens. I took my nephew to a birthday party at a chuckee cheese like place a number of years ago and tucked away in a corner away from most of the crap games they had 3 awesome machines set up. I can't recall what they all were but one was a Neo Geo MVS and I dumped like $20 bucks into it and the other two while the kids ran around screaming.

:edit:

Oh just remembered a great WTF one. I live near San Diego and in Balboa Park there is a great aviation/space museum. It has an amazing collection of planes as well as an Apollo capsule and many other aviation related odds and ends. One of the stranger ones is tucked away in a corner of part of the museum, its fairly close to the section dealing with naval aviation. Its an After Burner machine!

Nice.

A seedy donut shop by me used to have a Tempest cabinet.

There was a time when every Chuck E Cheese had a Geo. There is really nothing odd about that.

The best weird places I know of are the megasized truck stops, particularly the ones on I-80/90. That's where you'll find stuff like Family Guy pinball (very good, btw), functioning MoCap boxing, and other high end stuff. They are about the only places left with any kind of budget to buy games. It used to be that laundromats were a pretty good place to find a working Vanguard or POW, but eventually every arcade machine dies if it doesn't get repairs once in a while.

These days arcade stuff is either condensed to the few specialty arcades like Galloping Ghost, Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical Museum, and Pinball Pete's or its in someone's house. Most "arcades" only have redemption, and because of this today's 10 year olds actually think redemption machines are the definition of "arcade game"...which is so damned sad. :(

I worked at CEC when I was 16, and there were zero games that didn't spew tickets at you.

When I was little, I didn't bother with anything other than Ski-ball and pizza.

Their pizza is still good at least.  Thin, not doughy, burnt as f*ck pepperoni.  A step above frozen pizzas.

Chuck-E-Cheese near me also has Metal Slug 5, but no KOF.  Though it does have the Mario Kart sit down, which is pretty rad too.

LOL, but this is ALSO a weird place

OK how about this? its' called U.S. Land and it is a basically only playground in a shopping mall for kids. you pay 100yens for 15 minutes and can be in there as long yo want. if you stay over 4 hours you just pay the daily stay fee of 1280yens in total.

but now comes the interessting part of this story, because they also have dozens of game cabs staying around there, all set on free-play. from stuff like lucky & wild till guwange or dodonpachi cabs, which you can use for as long you like.

yeah, the truck stops near me all have a room that was built for arcade games... but all they have these days are UFO/crane catcher type games, a golf games with a trackball, and some deer hunting light gun game.

The hotel my brother works at has a couple of arcade games, including an MVS with Bust-a-Move on it. for some weird reason, it's just outside the pool. I guess that's kinda weird.

LOL, but this is ALSO a weird place

free play for as long as you like for $16.50? Get out of the way, kids, I've got a high score to make!

It's probably gone now but there's a laundromat in U-city, St. Louis that had a Dynamite Cop cab in there. I love that game so I go there with a friend to play it sometimes. I guess it makes sense to have a game around where people are sitting around killing time. Great selection though!

I still think seeing MS5 at a Chuck E. Cheese is pretty weird.

The Chuck E. Cheese here has Metal Slug 6.  Lot's of young boys love the run 'n' guns, so it's not too surprising.

Yeah that's not so weird.  :D

I still think seeing MS5 at a Chuck E. Cheese is pretty weird.

SNK USA actually had special smaller MVS cabinets made for, AFAIK, exclusively Check E Cheese and Showbiz Pizza. When I was a kid Chuck E Cheese was the only place to find Dragon's Lair, a game so high end it cost $.50.

Finding games at Check E Cheese is not weird. That's what they are for. While the ball pit and tickets thing is more important, they have always been a place for video games.

The local flea market by me has Street Fighter 2 Championship Edition, Street Fighter, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, Off Road, NBA Jam, and Hang-On, just to name a few.

I've been to various indoor flea markets across the country and almost always see arcades there. The one closest to me has Marvel Super Heroes, Street Fighter 3, and Lethal Enforcers.

I should add that there are only 3 games at the Chuck E. Cheese.....

MS5, a KOF game (both are in strange sega cabinets that have nice joysticks), and Lets Go Jungle, another Sega game.

So, I guess it is kind of weird in that regard since they're surrounded by games for little midgets.

Also, ball pits were pretty much outlawed years ago.  Broken glass and diseases inside.

When I was a kid, I expected to find arcade cabs all over the place (the candy store at the corner, deli, bowling alley, ice rink, diner, laundromat, mall, etc.), but I never expected to find one at the car wash! It was outside, in direct sunlight.

Actually, I never saw a cab at the car wash. Total fabrication.

But I was pleasantly surprised when my uncle refurbished a pinball machine in his basement. It was an awesome 70's model with great artwork (sexy cyber cowgirl on a cyber horse).

Ha!  That theater must be run by relatives of a local pizza joint, which also has a Simpsons Arcade game with jacked up buttons.

They probably don't know what it's worth and would want a shit ton.  Haha or maybe they'll  be like $200 and it's yours.  Hmm...or it's rented from a company and you're shit out of luck.

if theyre anything like the Roses in North Carolina, its a bunch of overweight sisterbangers that shouldn't be allowed outside, lol.

Even the leasing operators will sell often these days. And it is someone else's machine, btw. That foil sticker in the upper right identifies them.

They'd probably take $350 for it.

For all anyone knows, the owner may have forgotten or abandoned it.

Sometimes they're not leased and were just picked up with the sticker still on it. :-/

But, most leasing operators don't feel like dicking off with cabinets from that era, so they hock them so they can buy more DDR.

End result: More games for us real gamers to shove in our homes! \o/

During the mid 90's though, that particular Roses location was going alot harder on their arcade selection than now.

back then I've seen games come and go such as Legendary Wings, Final Fight, Gang Wars, Operation Thunderbolt, Jackal, and the DEVASTATORS!

I knew a guy who lived in a place where the previous owner had built a Tempest machine into the outside wall of the house. That's weird, IMO.

A few year ago I was driving by a residential neighborhood where a house had a Street Fighter II Turbo arcade right in the front porch.  The cab was kind of weathered and in rough condition.  I thought that was really odd, so I stopped and inquired about it. The guy said his son didn't play it anymore and he didn't have any room for it inside the house.  I'm glad I inquired about it since he was getting rid of it and gave it to me for free.  But I gave his son $20 as a kind gesture anyway.

Also bought a Neogeo 1-slot with Shodown 2 at the fleamarket of all places.  Wasn't looking for an arcade at the time but it was a deal that was too hard to pass up.

Somewhat recently I saw a laundry mat that had a Neogeo with KOF 95.  It was getting a lot of play time too.

oddly enough, the restaurant my GF works at has a couple arcade machines, golden tee, some deer hunting game, but the highlight is definitely Hydro Thunder!
many times i've gone to pick her up early just so i could play a few rounds of that one...

There's also a Beef O' Bradys nearby with a hunter game, a golf game, a motorcycle game, and a Tron pinball machine.  Man that's a fun game of pinball. :D

My band was playin a show, can't remember exactly where, I wanna say Tennessee, and we were at this decent sized venue. The backstage area for the bands to hang in (which usually consists of a couple couches, a toilet and free beer) had a Galaga! I damn near forgot to tune my axe before we went on!
