Post by: roflmao on December 07, 2011, 02:22:52 PM
I'm sure a lot of you have already found this guys channel on youtube, but I wanted to put the word out for those that haven't yet.
http://www.youtube.com/user/Mushaaleste
He does longplays of shmups. Lot's of pce/tg16 goodness as well as other systems. He makes games like Lords of Thunder look easy. I've spent way too much time watching his channel.

lol, he's a good old RL friend of mine, which I also have met several times at some swiss game nights, including the legendary pc engine offline-meeting in 2004 -> You can also see him there for some cheering :)
For western standards, he's a rather excellent Shumps-Player!

Why shmups? I still never understood this. I have always just called them shooters. That's what they've always been. I've never heard someone ever call them shmups, shoot em ups or the like. Just plain old shooters. I guess shooters just pertain to first person games now? [-(
He is a very good player. It is very nice watching his play throughs.

I think the use of the word shmup is pretty useful these days, in a world where the first things that come to people's minds is "Call of Duty, Gears of War, Halo" when the word shooter is uttered. It weeds out who's your fellow fans too.

Yeah, I never really had used the term "shooter" for "shoot 'em ups", since that was always kind of an ubertitle for any kind of games shooting at things, regardless of the exact genre in 2D or 3D.
Mosty fitting western term: shoot 'em up (short: shmup) Correct Japanese term (separated in horizontal and vertical): yoko scroll shooting (横スクロールシューティング) or tate scroll shooting (縦スクロールシューティング)

yeah but in the original meaning, "STG" also includes almost all the "shoot @ sumssin'" games.

Have no fear, some of us old-timers will carry the term "shooter" to our graves. I've mostly gotten over it, but my skin still crawls a little when I read "shmup", or even worse... hear it!

I really don't get why the gaming elite feel like the word "shmup" is below them. [ul][li]It's fun to say. [/li][li]It's obviously short for "Shoot 'em up", which distinguishes itself from the term "shooter" which is used these days for first person shooters.[/li][li]It's fewer characters to type.[/li][/ul] Nowadays I go out of my way just to piss them off just to hear them whine about it. :D
Really - It's fun to say! ...just rolls of the tongue.

The self-proclaimed shoot'em up elite has a forum called www.shmups.com (http://www.shmups.com/).
Any further objections?

Oh, I am by no means elite. I don't know anyone worse at shooters than me, so my disdain for the term "shmup" has nothing to do with any sort of elitism or snobbery. I just absolutely despise the way it looks and sounds. And I know full well that it's here to stay, for better or for worse. Doesn't mean I have to like it!

Well a lot of it probably has to do with where I grew up. Most didn't call them shmups. Shoot em ups always just seemed silly. We all just called them shooters. It was fine because there were no 1st person games back then. At that same time somewhere else there was probably people that called em shmups. I guess I didn't really think about it that way. I thought everyone called them shooters back then and shmups was a internet thing to distinguish it from 1st person shooters forthe past 15 years. Shooters were, well...shooters back then. They weren't Call of Duty or *insert 1st peson game here*. It's just a stupid ass small pet peve I've had. Haha I'll get over it.
BTW Tats I didn't know I could only be elite by going to shmups.com :-k

100% in agreement over the inanity of the term "shmup". It is baby-talk for a mentally-challenged pigeon. Now, "shooter" and "shoot-em-up" are only slightly less imbecilic, but they are certainly preferable.
I spent my whole life using "shooter" and, yes, I would always have to clarify "like Galaga or Gradius" so folks didn't think I was obsessed with Hogan's Alley...but I have had to accept that "shoot-em-up" (which, I am pretty certain, was originally used to describe any carnival/fair/arcade mechanical shooting games—yes, with metal BB's and the like) and "shmup" are here to stay. And yes, I will admit that in today's world we need precise categories (sub-genres) to describe all the different types of games out there.
I just wish we had a term that was more dignified or, at least, more "neutral" (think "platformer").
Oh, why did I waste my time posting this rant again?
I use the term "shmup" in my own writing, too, because I want folks to find stuff that is relevant to their interests.

I'm sorry to have brought this subject up in this thread. I should've started it in fighting street. I will say one thing, MushaAleste sure knows how to play.
