What would you consider a "holy f*ck!" moments for the NEC systems? Something like a part of a game that made you go "whoa!" Was it seeing Jagu at the end of Legendary Axe? The opening sequence to Ys? The mega bosses in Lords of Thunder? Or a something from a PC Engine game that most of us American gamers haven't seen yet?
What's your favorite "awe" moment?
-
Definitely Ys 1-2. I was enthralled with the beginning story telling and realized CD would be the way to go. 2nd would have been Alien Crush. I love pinball machines and I loved horror movies and this just seem to combined the two together.
-
I'd have to agree with Ys, specifically, the end of part one and the scene intro to part to. Although the first level of Dracula X is a close second - It made me realize just how much untapped potential the Turbo had.
-
China Warrior jump kicking off the title screen straight into the game.
-
Another moment for me was seeing the Turbo Express for the first time. I couldn't believe a portable like that could even exist! ]
-
I loved the TurboGrafx-16, but wasn't truly blown away until I booted up the Duo for the first time and started playing Gate of Thunder. I'd never seen or heard anything like that in a videogame.
-
Ys... the Book I intro was "wow"! but the intro to Book II was "holy f@ck!". I had never imagined video games could be that cool.
Before Ys, Double Dungeons and Dungeon Explorer really defined the coolness of the system for me and I played many hours on those... Bonk's Adventure really sealed the deal that I had made the right choice back on Christmas 1990.
Ys made me a lifer.

Kabukiden is full of them, but most are spoilery. Here's one that won't ruin the game if you haven't played it yet-

Ys II opening cinema was shocking, as it played off of the ending of Y's for SMS.
That tenticle boss in Sapphire.
The part in TMII when Kinnu finally snaps.
All the Dark Falz style full screen bosses in Neo Metal Fantasy.
Ys III narrated opening pics.
Air Zonk title screen.
Spriggin Mark 2 stage 1.
That giant boss on a bed of lava in Spriggin.
The opening cinema of Ys IV.
Neutopia first and last bosses.
Too many to list in Snatcher, the maggoty skull is particularly memorable.
Discovering the classupgrades in Dungeon Explorer II.
Discovering the Harmit in Dungeon Explorer without being tipped off.
Seeing Alien Crush for the first time.
Waiting after the credits of Bloody Wolf, in case they give you a cheat code or second quest or something... And receiving both. Then it happens again. :)
Surfing in Dracula X.
Vegas girl in Parodius Da.
Final boss in Salamander.
Stage 1 of Gradius 2.
The barrel stage in Metamor Jupitor.
Gulverboy Ys-style mecha battles.
Every moment of Legend of Xanadu II.
Boss stages of Legend of Xanadu.
Lucifeller in Tengai Makyou Ziria.
Dungeon Explorer II opening cinemas. Found the game in my mail box during lunch break of high school. My friends and I watched through to the title screen and the silence was only broken when one of them asked "you're not going back to school are you?"
Monster Lair bosses.
Ninja Spirit stage 1 and 3 bosses.
Everything in Lords and Gate of Thunder. Highlights include final area of fire stage in Lords and first area of Dark City in Gate.
Dragon Slayer opening cinema.
Neutopia title screen.
The Alpha Zones in Keith Courage.
Double giant Bonk action in Bonk 3 HuCard.
Most of the bosses and so many of the stages of Super Darius and Super Darius 2.
Everything in Star Parodia.
Stage 3 of Magical Chase.
Aeroblasters stage 2 tunnel section and boss fight.
Splatterhouse chainsaw arm boss.
John Madden Duo CD Football ending cinema.
The golden temple boss in Shapeshifter.
Mysty crater section in Terraforming.
Necross battles.
Benkei Gaiden soundtrack.
Batman cinemas.
Forgotten Worlds stage 1 boss.
Everything in Gekisha Boy.

TV Sports Football, The player crashing thru the screen got me excited...........Then I played it and relized the start up screen was the best part about the game.
-
I just had a "holy f*ck" moment after seeing Black Tiger's post! Thanks guys!

hahahahhaa.
I second that.
-
When Beemer gave away a shit ton of Sapphires...
-
Yeah, first time I popped in Ys. First CD game I'd ever played. That would be the big one.
The ending to Cosmic Fantasy 2. Don't want to spoil, let's just say I hadn't got very far into Phantasy Star II yet.
Going back to Darm Tower in Ys IV.
Watching Natas go crazy in DE2.
And grinding all the f***** way up to level 16 in Exile 2 only to NOT get that final level up.
Watching the ending to Dungeon Master: Theron's Qu --- oh wait, nevermind :-(
-
Oh I forgot one ...
the first time I saw Ooga Bonk, Dabba Dooba, Ooga Mooga!
-
Gate of Thunder was the first PCE game that showed me the system could do stuff the others guys couldn't. Aeroblasters was the first game to convince me the system was an equal.
-
The first time I saw Exile, GoT, and LoT at my friends house in 1993, and my jaw dropped.
Thus was my introduction to the turbo.
...and
LEGEND OF XANADU 1&2 - Every second was pure ecstacy.
-
My actual introduction to the Turbo was Bonk's Adventure
that's a pretty epic introduction too, when you're only 6.
-
the first time i played ai cho aniki. just WHAT THE F*CK.
so naturally anytime anyone asks about the system, i show them the game, and get the same reaction.
plus, awesome music.
then drac X and Ys 1-3, the entire games.
-
The music in dungeon explorer. It was so distinct, it floored me. I played that game for hours just rocking to the music
the opening cinema to cosmic fantasy 2. it was the first time i had seen such a thing in a video game and it ruined my concept of what other consoles could do.
The complete song with lyrics in one of the later stages of final zone 2. I did not know such a thing was possible at the time.
Everything about Dracula X. For me its still the definitive castlevania.
Neutopia, the graphics, the sound, the play control. being a copy cat zelda is not a bad thing.
Magical chase and specifically its stage 5 music. To me this is a shining example of what the turbo is all about.
Gates of thunder once again, for me it just ruined what other consoles had to offer.
The giant bonk sprite in bonk 3. really impressive, and again an example of why i love the turbo.
-
I just started playing cosmic fantasy 2 and some of the cinematic are amazing.
-
The first time I've seen R-Type..
..in a game mag back in 1988!!!
And sure all the other excellent games, most of you all have already posted :)
Sapphire also couldn't close my mouth during quite the whole first-time gaming-time.
-
Cho Aniki. I'm not sure where to start.
Also the first time I started up Raiden... that soundtrack. Man. That soundtrack. To this day I still think the TG16 music sounds better than the version on the PS1.
-
I have to go with Blue BMW and his free Sapphires.
But I also freaking love the last bosses on Legendary Axe and Bonk's Adventure. Ninja Spirit Level 1 and 2 have some amazing background elements like the statues in the first level especially. The Bosses are all awesome in Ninja Spirit as well. I played Valis III first on the Genesis, but the music blows me away and the art quality is top notch all the way through. I hate that ice level though.

I fixed that for you.
Don't be hatin' on Valis III. :)

I'm with you there. Raiden on the TG16, in every way, seems superior to every other version I've played. Absolutely one of my favorite, very solid shooters.

I love the Raiden HuCard. If you are a fan of the game, you may consider getting the Raiden CD, which has a *nicely rendered* Redbook soundtrack...it's orchestral, but don't dismiss it. It really is nice. And I'm the last person to praise a soundtrack like this (since they are a dime-a-dozen and usually sound pretty generic).
There are two additional (new) stages, as well. I like the stages, but, honestly, they are particularly groundbreaking.
Serach for "rolins Raiden" and you'll (hopefully) find his thoughts on it.
If there is interest, I can rip the music and make it available.

OK, I like the PCE, but if I'm gonna play Raiden, I'm gonna play it on a PS as the Raiden Project. I can't think of any good reason to play Raiden on any other platform.

Many people appreciate console specific aesthetics and seeing how games differ from technologically superior sources as well as other comparable consoles.

I hear you. I have PS Raiden Project, too. It is really sweet. But guess what? As a fan of Raiden, I love that I have two new unique stages (novelties, perhaps, but they are competently designed) stages to slog through (they ain't easy!) and a gorgeous rendition of the soundtrack to appreciate!
To build on what Black_Tiger said: we are crazy bastards who appreciate all the nuances in games. We are the crazy bastards who will play through nearly identical games just to identify the minor differences across regions (JP vs. Europe vs. USA) and platforms (arcade vs. pce, for example). Unless a game is severely broken, I even appreciate "flawed" versions because...well, you know :)
I say this even with my limited time these days.

Very true :)
Btw, if I gonna play Raiden on the PSx, then it's gonna be for sure Raiden DX :D

I went "holy f*ck!" the first time I jabbed a soldering iron into my hand when modding my PCE ;-) LOL
-
LOL, i can relate to that. I burned myself twice working on a mod a few nights ago. Its not a mod if blood and burned flesh is not involved.
