Post by: lukester on January 15, 2012, 01:57:47 PM
To have fun, I decided to create a unique poll. :D This is for picking your favorite Capcom PC Engine game. Have fun!

It has to be Street Fighter II'. SFII' is one of the top five greatest games of all time. Its a totally unfair comparison.

If SFII' were never ported to PCE I'd pick Forgotten Words.

So are we all going to just vote SFII' or choose our second favorite?

Here are mine in rough order from favorite to least favorite-

Street Fighter II
Forgotten Worlds
Sidearms/Sidearms Special
SonSon II
Chiki Chiki Boys
Buster Bros.
Tiger Road
Tenchi Wo Kurau\
1943 Kai
F1 Dream
Strider
Fighting Street
Adventure Quiz Capcom World

I went with Strider.
Son Son 2 as a second,
and SF2 is great too of course.

I went with Buster Bros i just like it's mix of platforming and puzzle elements.

For runner ups in this order.
Son Son II
Side Arms
SFII
Forgotten Worlds
Chiki Chiki Boys

Meh, I had to put Street Fighter II, but otherwise it would be Pang (Buster Brothers) and then Son Son II.

SFII is of course fab, but I don't like fighters that much anyway...  Buster Bros is great, but SideArms is really an excellent, excellent conversion that really gets your adrenaline pumping.

Difficult.

As far as PCE exclusives go, Son Son II is the sure thing. Else I would stick with SFII' as well.

Honorable 3rd places:

Forgotten Worlds (looks sooo much better than the wimpy genny..lol)
Sidearms/Sidearms Special (classec)
Chiki Chiki Boys (manly because the uber nice arcade pixel art. the game play still stinks)
Buster Bros. (super 2p. fun)

The rest doesn't turn me on too much.

Oh snap - it's up there and I really didn't see it O___O  Yeah, I think that probably slots in at number 3 for me.  Sorry Sonson II.

Street Fighter II is the only logical choice.

Sidearms would get my #2 though.

...Son Son II just doesn't do it for me for some reason, I think it is a little over-hyped.  I honestly prefer Son Son.

I have never, and I never will, care much for vs. fighting games, so I don't give two sh*ts for Street Fighter II'.

Ughhhh. I hate to even waste time and "ink" on the subject.

As for my favorite, I still can't decide. So many great games to choose from.

Son Son was a game?  I thought Sonson II was a quasi-sequel to black tiger or something?

Street Fighter II' - Champion Edition, hands-f*cking-down... after that, it gets a little tricky.  Probably either Daimakaimura/Ghouls N' Ghosts or Son Son II (aka Black Tiger with cute shit slapped on top).  PCE Arcade CD Strider is weak sauce... so much wrong with that game.  Forgotten Worlds and Side Arms are both great, but no 2p co-op.  The rest are lulz.

Ah, sweet :3  That whole era pretty much passed me by (well, I was about 5 and not in Japan).  Still, it's pretty cool to know there's still a whole 'nother world of games out there to discover.

Tiger Road, First time playing this was in a arcade and it was love at first sight. Was really hoping for a console port back then (either Nes or Genesis)... and when it came out on TG16, I was soo pissed since I didnt have a TG16 back then... #-o

I like Tiger Road a lot actually. While it is extremely different from the arcade , and hit detection is weird, it is still somewhat fun :), and the new music is great. It is on my "hucards to get" list.

Wasn't Son Son II actually developed by NEC Avenue? I'd like to know as I love the game, but never really considered it a Capcom game.

I thought the same thing about Street Fighter II before being corrected.  It's very Capcom though; even the money is called Zenny.  I think Capcom made a lot of their own games at the time.. with the exception of some early MD/Genesis games.

All the PCE games based on Capcom franchises were developed by people other than Capcom. The only reason Capcom dared to develop and publish some MD games later on, is because the Genesis was to big to ignore. If the PC Engine sold tens of millions of consoles worldwide, then Capcom would have begun making games for it as well.

Son Son II was made by an NEC developer and tacked on the theme of one licensed game of a company onto another game from the same company. An NEC developer did the same thing with Space Fantasy Zone.

This is what I know about them up to date.

Capcom is 1980's they are never comming back.

They messed up with the official SF3 release, the one where the final boss can recharge his health, and the alpha film made no sense.

The creator of Megaman was to go on to his own studio
but I have not heard anything about him, and his non-capcom games. Asides the studio doing work for him.

The creator of Resident Evil got the short end of the stick. After the Capcom five failed miserably ( thanks to
P.N.03 ) and the lost of two other CCFive games that was not released ( which was looking sooo auwsome ).
He then attempted to start his own company but again that failed. Then he worked for another company outside of Capcom ( grasshopper ) and failed. That company got absorbed back into Capcom or something like that.

That sums up Capcom.

Street Fighter ( canned )
Rockman ( canned )
Resident Evil ( canned )

I am sure we could write letters to capcom, about saving their business, but then again I am just a r-tarded American who is bald ( less then one inch of hair ) play with guns, and eat garbage bags of popcorn.

SonSon II was actually a co-development between Capcom and NEC Avenue. Just look at the staff credits on the back of the manual. It tells you who was from what company. Also, the game was programmed by Capcom, and so was the music. The music was by the same guy who did the music for Megaman 2, and also the remixed mussic for Hucard SideArms. . At least there is oneoriginal Capcom game on the PC Engine :o

Son Son II might have been in the works for arcade or Famicom or something and then ported by NEC. It'd be cool to know for sure how involved Capcom was with any PCE games. I'm sure that they did more than drop off the game assets and not answer the phone. But ports and misc licensed games from that era too often list the original credits, the new credits, undefined mixtures, etc. Back then publishers often outsourced project to developers like Tose, but took all the credit. Capcom might have also just allowed certain employees to work on some of these ports more directly. It'd be cool if there are interviews out there with people directly involved in the development of these games that got into specifics. I'm sure there are in Japanese magazines at least.

Well NEC is a huge electronics company, and Capcom making a game on their system that would be fun would also be a huge thing as well. Being the nationalist system and all, Americans just got another Atari 5200, and horror games.
