Title: Mathius' "You're Favorite Sega Dreamcast Imports" Thread
Post by: Mathius on January 18, 2012, 04:49:32 PM
I am soon to be an owner of a Dreamcast that can play imports. Barring the obvious choices of the post-mortem Dreamcast shooter line-up like Border Down, and Last Hope, which import games would you recommend? I have one that I am keeping an eye on, but it's going to be expensive. Until then...

If you like racers, Daytona USA is a must! One of only three games I imported for mine. Phantasy Star Online, Daytona, and Shenmu 2. All three are fantastic games! I used one of those utopia boot disks (think that's what they are called) to play mine though. Haven't touch my poor dreamcast in a while though. Been too consumed in Turbob gaming.

Ikaruga is essential.

Played the xbox arcade demo version, which I'm sure does the game no justice. Game was still sweet though.

It was probably a decent port, but it's a game that pushes the Dreamcast to it's limits. It's one of the few DC games I've played that actually can cause some slowdown on the system. I have a ton of other suggestions for the DC but most of my favorites have been release outside of Japan such as Bangai-O, Tech Romancer, Rez, Street Fighter 3: Third Strike, Bust a Move 4, Dynamite Cop, King of Fighters Dream Match 1999, etc.

Thanks for the responses guys!

The key word in the title of this thread is "imports". If it was released in NA then I probably know about it. Let's keep it import only.

Shenmue 2 (PAL) would be an import, just not from the right place =) I haven't been really impressed with the Dreamcast since I picked one up last year. It's obviously a sweet console, but I find that I'm not very interested in the polygon/3d games (which seems to be the majority of the library). I've gotten much more mileage out of my Saturn.

Ah yes. Shenmue II would be an import. And an expensive one at that if I get the PAL version. I played, beat, and loved the first Shenmue so Shenmue II is a definite once I get the $$.

I've had some crazy fun with frame gride and marionette handler, excelent mech games.
if you're looking for some shmuppage, try Karous and Radilgy, my two faves on the system

My favorites:

Sakura Wars 3 - This is the most lavishly produced game in the history of Sega. They poured every f*cking thing they had into this game. Beautiful 3D battles, AMAZING anime cut scenes, fantastic settings, quick and easy gameplay. Don't let the soul crushing mediocrity of the anime series or both Part 5s influence your decision to buy this. I can't say enough about this game. Part 4 is also nice, but its really a fan disk more than a real sequel since it only has three battles in it (1 GD as opposed to 3 for part 3). If you've never played 1 and 2 those were also ported to DC. Right now there is a Complete Box on eBay with a $150BIN (I paid $200 new when it came out) which gets you everything at once as well as an extra GD with all the download missions)

Lack of Love -

Propellor Arena - Actually, this was never released and therefore can only be pirated, which is a shame because its full on Fighting Vipers grade insanity but with prop planes.

Fighting Vipers 2 - Which reminds me of this game. Why is that dude WEARING A BIKE? Well, its the streets, yo, or at least what programmers who haven't seen daylight in 5 years think the streets look like in their caffeine fueled altered states.

Shenmue 2 - In this case by "import" I mean it has to be imported from the EU, not Japan. While Shenmue was a technically amazing game with about 1000 really annoying aspects, Shenmue 2 pretty much fixes every single one of them and moves the setting to the walled city of Kowloon. HOW BAD TO THE BONE IS THAT?

Ikaruga - This game is beautiful. Sure, you can get it for other platforms but...f*ck that.

Capcom versus SNK 2 - The game that Capcom proclaimed "2D will never die" on the spine card...just before they abandoned 2D fighting for a decade.

Tech Romancer (JP ver. is called Kikaio) - HOLY SHIT. You know how Namco takes its arcade games that then quadruples the amount of content thus making the JAMMA obsolete? Capcom did this here only they did it with a game that actually had some f*cking class.

Powerstone - Not deep, but 4 player fun. Has some of the only VMU games worth playing.

Rez - Possibly my favorite game of the last decade. Again, its on other system but...f*ck that. The DC ver puts out VGA and the PS2 one doesn't. Victory goes to the DC, clearly. This one came out in JP and the EU, I suspect the EU version is cheaper but I don't know.

Dream Studio - This is basically an RPG maker. Its a bit challenging because of the language barrier, but the game you make in it doesn't have to be.

Some of the larger CRTs will be irreparably damaged if made tate.

If you can't rotate it, it's already broke IMO!

+1 for Rez.

A quick glance at Wiki's import DC games list: Under Defeat, Ikaruga, Psyvariar 2, Zero Gunner 2 catch my eye. Space Channel 5 sequel is JP only, if you into that type of game. But to tell the truth, I forget US vs JP releases, it's all Dreamcast and basicly no lock out.

Zero Gunner 2, Gunbird 2, Border Down, and Trizeal.  Border Down can be had at a decent price if you don't don't want the limited edition version.

Another vote for Ikaruga and Under Defeat.

One of my DC's is connected via a VGA box to a 19" Dell 4:3 LCD monitor (circa 2006), which is perfect for playing both games in tate mode. The games scale well to the monitor's native 1280x1024 and just look stunning.

Border Down is overrated but a playable shooter still.I'd still rank Under Defeat as a toptier shooter for the dc but it comes in two ways, the regular and the limited edition wich has the sound track.

Trizeal is garbage

Another mans garbage is another mans treasure.  I like the game quite a bit.  It's just like a 16-bit shooter.  It's good if you're tired of all the crazy bullet hell shooters.  I am in total agreement on Under Defeat.  I didn't list UD since quite a few already have.

Regarding Trizeal:

Now that I think about it...I've never played this game! Whoops. Sorry! The one I was thinking of what Chaos Field and that is most certainly garbage. Way too f*cking abstract and complicated for its own good.

I remember reading an article about Trizeal. The dude had to lay off everyone but himself after the Naomi release so he ported it to DC by himself. He even made the manual. That is some real shit right there.

Yeah I ordered my DC copy of Trizeal straight from him.  Regarding Chaos Field that is a game I never liked.  It's not terrible, but you hit all the points as to why I don't care for it.

Chaos Field, Radilgy, and Karous are on Ultimate Shooting Collection for the Wii.  That runs about $20, and they're in English, so importing those for the Dreamcast is overkill.  Trizeal has a (Japanese) PS2 port that costs a lot less.  Ikaruga was on the Gamecube in English and is hard to find and expensive, but nowhere near as hard to find or as expensive as the DC version.  I believe Border Down and Under Defeat are actually Dreamcast exclusives.

Shenmue II was on the original Xbox, but the Xbox version is dubbed, and you can't port your Shenmue 1 save (although porting it for the DC takes some trickery--editing the save file to add the European flag is easy, but getting it off and onto the DC is hard.  Too bad nobody has written a homebrew disk to modify the save file in place.)

Actually, they have. I can't remember what its called but I remember it coming out. I mentioned it on one of the earlier episodes of Game Face Radio, but that was a long-ass time ago. I don't remember the details.

I did it by hand by emailing the save to myself back when I still had a dial-up ISP. The easiest way to do it now is probably to just buy an EU copy of Shenmue 1 and beat it again. :)

Man, the english voice acting is really pretty ho-hum. But I guess the NTSC-version was dubbed as well, huh.

Yup, that's Ikaruga. One of the best ass-kicking shmups ever. Keeping track of the polarity of your ship and the enemies can be tough, but play it enough and it'll become second nature.

GameWorks is on my wish list just so I can finally play Power Drift. PD contains my favorite arcade soundtrack of all time. I'd shell out for the cheaper Saturn version but that port isn't arcade perfect. I am after the "true" arcade listening experience. :)

Joe says the Gameworks Vol 1 collection isn't arcade perfect either, but I honestly can't tell a difference. That said, I don't own Space Harrier, Outrun, Hang On, Afterburner II, or Power Drift cabinets in my home to actually compare, so I have to rely on memory.

Perfect or not, they're pretty damn close.

From what I have heard on YT vids the musics in Power Drift DC were identical to the arcade version. Of course, I would have to play it myself to really know.
