Title: Magical chase
Post by: soop on February 06, 2012, 03:00:01 AM
Since I've been hanging out on the turbo board, I've been hearing more about Magical Chase, and I know it's expensive, but I have no idea how many were released.

But anyway, spare a thought for us poor PC Engine collectors.  We have Darius Alpha you know :(

There's another giant thread on this.

The very short version is we don't know how many were printed, but we do know that 1600 got destroyed when TTI had to destroy their unpurchased assets as part of bankruptcy.

Huh, did not know that.  That's pretty sad.

there's one on ebay in completed listings that sold for 600 bucks or something like that. Judging by how much some people really want for that game, someone got a sweet deal.

If you're counting promo games, then Darius Alpha is no big deal. Good luck tracking down Youkai Douchuki Gold Version.

This also makes you worthy to charge whatever you wish for your autograph but, since I too just happen to have what some consider to be some of the rare gems, you can just give me a free autograph and in return, I'll give you a scan Hero Tonma with my autograph and terrifying face to boot.

Dude, the TG-16 is ALL ABOUT Magical Chase. MC is the only thing that matters. Who has it, how much people are paying for it, how many were made, how many were abducted by aliens...who gives a shit about anything else?

And who actually plays these games anyway? The shit is old and for children. I'm glad Darius Alpha has almost no fun factor. If it was any good I'd be tempted to play it, and then I might scratch the label. That would be insane!!!

Seriously, f*ck Magical Chase and double f*ck Darius Alpha.

Seriously, f*ck Magical Chase and double f*ck Darius Alpha.

what if you could buy them for 10 bucks each. would you still say that?

I mean would you be saying "f*ck Blazing Lazers" if it would cost 900 bucks?

Good question, I wondered that myself.

Yes I would probably sell both of them back for about the price I bought them for.  Or, I would raffle them off.  If I don't like the game I don't like it.  Doesn't matter what the price is.

Not to be a jack ass or anything, but they aren't really all that great games to begin with, so why spend the cash on acquiring them other than just to collect them all?

The same argument could be applied to cheap games.  Lots of guys here have hundreds of games, many of which aren't all that great; is acquiring and keeping a mediocre game okay if it's less than $20 but bad if over $20?

It depends on a few things, one of the main ones is the personal value of that gamer. I have tons of games, some good and some bad. But there's an element of fun to having a friend over and having them say "Hey, I remember a game called _____ do you have it" and being able to dig it out and play it and see if it's as good, bad or like what I or they remember.

Also, kind of like with bad movies, there's an element of fun to having friends over to play bad games and see how long they're willing to tolerate it. Sitting someone down in front of Talespin, Darkwing Duck, Superman 64 or Bubsy 3D and having them try to find some redeeming value can provide entertainment on its own.

The thing is pretty much every review and info I read on Magical Chase states that its a good game. I have yet to see a negative review on this game.

It's definitely a good game, whether or not if it's a game good enough to be worth its current market value is another question entirely and is the reason I think the game gets complained about more than it should.

Magical Chase is an amazing and unique game that has special graphics and sound for PC Engine. The most important part is that it is fun. What you pay and how you choose to play it is your business.

Darius Alpha isn't a real game and a superior version of it is included in Super Darius. Darius Plus and Super Darius are fantastic though and again offer unique experiences and technical showcases for the PC Engine.

Many people appreciate playing real games on real hardware and living PCE experiences that have been available to others.

Isn't the PCE and TG-16 versions of MC slightly different? like the graphics and stuff?

I saw somewhere that the US version has more complicated graphics like the brick castle etc.

there are graphical differences between the two games, i dont remember the extent. I agree that people are overcharging for it just because its "magical Chase", but as far as hucard games go

i consider it a landmark title. Hell the gameboy color remake is almost as good.

MC is good, but not my favorite shooter on PCE. Gate of Thunder, Lords of Thunder, and all the solider games are better, IMO, as are Spriggen 1 and 2, and Nexzer, all of which are way way cheaper.

Darius Alpha on the other hand is basically useless. Nobody plays this thing. Its like 22" rims on a hummer. You only have it for, at best, completion's sake, or in the case of some douchebags, the chance to post extremely large but extremely low quality pictures on web forums.

Hahhh :D
Yeah, I've had a dream for about 15 years to own every PCE game, and that's one of the ones which would make it next to impossible.  Closer is the goal of owning all the cute systems boxed, of which the LT is the most obvious barrier.  But more doable.  And I think I'd actually use it too.

^ THIS....SO many better shooters for a fraction of the price.  Hell anymore you could nab a vast majority of the (MUCH) better shooters for just one US MC.

Although I love MC, if I didn't buy it new bitd, it would be the last Turbo game I'd make an effort to track down. But there are still a few cheap Turbo games I don't currently own copies of that I am making no ongoing effort to obtain, because although I do collect for personal reasons, playing games is my priority and I already have hundreds of Turbo/PCE titles that aren't receiving the attention they deserve.

Has it ever happened where someone picked up MC for a few bucks while watching ebay as a hawk and clicking newly listed every 2 minutes?

I mean, there may very well be someone who has no clue about what games are worth and is just clearing out their basement or attic or something. Just listing every game they see for like a buck or two.

you never know.

Another forum member found a Dynastic Hero for around 50.00 recently by doing that, but I don't believe Magical Chase has been sold in such a manner any time recently.

Rarely have I gotten any good deals on ebay lately. Surprisngly though, Amazon has a good collection of Turbo games there and they are a little bit better than ebay (got Cadash for $25 complete), but in all honesty, you are better off getting your games from our lovely community.
