hey guys!
I know that Supergrafx is backwards compatible to play Japanese PCEngine HuCards and it also has it's own HuCards ( I think 7 of them?).
My question is...Does Supergrafx play US TG-16 HuCards? If not, is there any mod or converter that will allow it to read them?
Thanks in advance!
-
It's a JP system, so it won't play US cards natively. The same methods for playing US HuCards on the other PC Engine systems will work though.

any idea where to get the US to JPN converter?
-
1. The SGFX does not play US TG16 games the exactly same way the PCE does not play US TG16 games.
2. Yes, there are several adaptors available, or then, there's that non-adaptor and switchless mod solution, created on this very forum here from our very deticated and genius users.

You can use the same converter you use to play JP games on a US system, but there is a pin inside the SGX that will need to be grounded so...you might as well just get a mod. Converters suck anyways.
Or you could just skip the SGX all together. It's pretty pointless. If you already have 300-400 TG/PCE games, then I guess it's time to get a SGX. There are at least 100 games you should have before you bother with a SGX. Think of the SGX as the bottom of the barrel that must eventually be scraped, but not right away.

ok. Thanks for the info.

I know what you mean, but I like the fact that it plays JPN games, and now I know it can play North America games with a mod, and on top of that it has it's own games which as far as I know have some ridiculous paralax features.
But as we speak I am looking at what these things sell for, umm, maybe I will pass on it. I think the prices are too high for this console.
Anyways it was good to know some of the info you guys provided. Thanks!

If you can find one for under $200 with the cdrom attachment kudos to you. Honestly though, your best bet is going to retro gaming conventions or wait around on the forums for someone to sell you one. I saw one boxed at the retro gaming convention in Portland Oregon boxed in the $200 range, kind of wishing I would have traded my white Japanese Saturn for it instead of trading it for a U.S Duo (that broke in less than a week and I traded off another story completely), again it depends if you really want to play those 7 or so games for it (2 of which are worthwhile IMHO).

I disagree. Firstly, I've always thought the Supergrafx looked sexy. But considering I found one, boxed, for £70, that's not much more than a Core console (roughly the same) AND it can play those 5 games. One is too expensive for me, but Daimakaimura is good, and I quite like Granzort (though it's confusing).
So basically, there's no negative over a core unit*, unless you already have one.
*apart from you need a RAU-30 for a briefcase setup - just get a Super CD-ROM 2

U NEED IT :)

There's a couple of things I need in that photo too :/

Exactly.
Just from an aspect of pure esthetics, imo this is the best looking console I have ever seen. It's a timeless design.
PS3 and XBOX look dated and old compared to this console. If it was year 3000, this thing would still look fresh.

Since all of the SGX games are modest sized HuCards and the hardware still only has two layers of tiles, the parallax is on par with early Genesis titles. There are PC Engine games with nicer looking parallax, more layers, transparency effects mixed in, etc.
SuperGrafx hardware has been cheap for many years now. Like most PCE hardware, the ones rotting on eBay are the ones people pass over, but they regularly show up on there at great prices.
-
Yeah, that's the real problem. The SGX in reality, with the games that actually exist for it, never produced anything more impressive that what the standard PCE would eventually do years later.
And also, yeah, it's not hard to get a great deal on one if you are patient, so even though it's pretty naff, it's still worth buying for cheap.
-
^ ahh i see, so is there really a possibility of finding an unboxed SGX for around $125? one controller, ac adapter and the audio/video output? Doesn't need to include games or anything.

I don't browse eBay often, but in the last year or so I've see a couple RGB modded systems go for around that price and at least a few as complete as you described for $100 or less.

Define cheap? I barely see a boxed unit go for under $200, then I look at the games and they range from $50-$500.

Guess I will have to be patient then. I wouldn't mind adding one to my collection, but I'm not spending big dollars on one.

I don't think that a cardboard box is going to help frozenintears experience all that parallax he heard about. eBay has at least one complete SuperGrafx for $139.99, which isn't far off off what he was hoping to get one for. eBay also has 4 of the SuperGrafx's games for under $50 right now. In general though, most of the SuperGrafx related listings are kinda high right now on eBay, but I did see some good deals during a quick browse.

thanks!! I will keep my eye peeled on this!!

Also, Daimamkaimura (Ghouls and Ghosts) is perhaps the best title for it. I have a loose one to sell, so if you get a supergrafx and you're interested, let me know ;)

how about Aldynes?
I saw a playthrough on it on youtube and was stunned!!!
I think it's the best shooter I have ever seen.

Don't worry, he's clearly a maroon. Just another johnny-come-lately that wants to have a cool retro gaming habit... but doesn't actually want to play anything.

I haven't played much, but I certainly can't say the same

I just saw a video about it on youtube, it was awesome. Also brotherzduomazov gave it epic review.
