Title: Fractal Engine version 2.0 released
Post by: ccovell on February 16, 2012, 12:21:17 PM
Hi, folks.  A couple of years ago, I added some more features to Fractal Engine but didn't quite finish it up and get it out the door...  :^o

Anyway, this year, I added in Julia set support and so here is something deserving of a release!

Available from this page:

Improvements over version 1.0

+ Twice as many colours in low-resolution mode!
+ Detects SuperGrafx hardware for even more colours / resolutions.
+ Julia Set now accessible!
+ Average of 1.7x speed increase.

*drool*

I like the last one.

I did a massive paper on fractals in college.  They rule.

Awesome, thanks so much for this! :D Can't wait for my flashcart to arrive to test drive this on an SGX.

I want to take a moment to rant here. Benoît Mandelbrot (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benoit_Mandelbrot) is one of the most influential people of my life. He defined a new branch of mathematics with far reaching implications (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fractal_antenna). As a 3D graphics programmer, I've found Benoît's (and Ken Musgrave's work) to be incredibly powerful. We aren't just talking the Mandelbrot Set or Perlin Noise here, check out Texturing and Modeling: A Procedural Approach (http://www.amazon.com/Texturing-Modeling-Second-Procedural-Approach/dp/0122287304) for an idea of just how powerful this stuff is.

Benoît died October 14th, 2010 and it was the first time I truly cared about the passing of someone "famous". RIP. .

I love fractals. When I got my first DOS PC in 1990, I played around with lots of freeware/shareware fractal programs. I'll be checking this out.

Now, if only that R-Type patch would get released one of these days...  :D

Thank you, Sadler, for posting a YT link to one of my favorite JoCo songs.

really nice work chris. now we just need to put it on a flash card. We can have full screen visualization while we listen to music.

It also includes an ISO for burning to a CD... no need to wait for a flash card if you have a CD-ROM unit.

One of the first things I started to write after I found HuC was a mandelbrot/julia set generator... then I found yours and moved on :D

Great to see you've released a new version which includes julia set! Looking forward to trying it out this weekend.

You have done some amazing work on the PCE and I can't wait to see what you come up with next!
