Title: North America vs. Europe
Post by: Turbotracks on February 25, 2012, 08:32:48 AM
Wondering if there is a difference between the the U.S. and European turbo chip releases including boxes? Is there any?

Thanks for the help!

Nothing in the ROM, I'm pretty sure.

The European releases were actually US chips. The European hardware is different though.

In boxes, the kind of letter is different but nothing more, the Pal/USA chips are compatible.

Is there such a thing as boxed PAL TG games?

My understanding was that they just used US boxes and put a price tag over them.

I would love it if we could speak to someone with first-hand experience with the PAL hardware and/or could tell us which specific titles were available in Europe.

We have decent information about the French PCE import scene, for example, but nothing solid about PAL TG-16 software availability (hell, we know more about the Korean Vistar! Not much, but more than PAL TG-16).

I'm not sure if anyone else remembers where this was, but there was a scan of an ad for buying TurboGrafx games (and hardware) in British pounds. There was 20ish games available plus the system. Does anyone still have that scan?

In Spain, I remember a magazine that had a store you could buy TG games from. A big omission was Keith Courage in Alpha Zones, which, as it was never released with a cardboard box, was never "imported".

Swissle had "only" pce imports. Can't help much on that front. But from pure hearing and reading, yeah i think they just put a new price tag on it, and in some cases, an add. instruction as a simple A4 letter or such.

Thanks for all of the help! I ended up buying a few factory sealed titles from somebody in the U.K. so I'll be sure to post once they arrive!
