Title: Hue Card Question
Post by: DrGamer on November 01, 2005, 01:25:27 AM
I have a question that I don't know since I have a Japanese PC Engine and the games I get are in Japanese. Do games that come on a Hue Card save on the Hue Card or do they use the systems internal memory???
Thanks!

It depends on the console you have. HuCards don't have any internal back-up RAM. If you have a CD-based system, then your games are saved in the back-up RAM integrated to the system. If you have a PC Engine, CoreGrafx, SuperGrafx, ShuttleGrafx, etc, you'll need an external back-up system (Ten no Koe 2, Back-Up Booster 1 or 2, Back-Up Unit).

I wonder if there is a place or site that would list the HueCard Games that save to themselves and not the PC Engine interal memory???
That would be a nice list to have  8)

To my knowledge, Populous is the only one; it's a ROM-RAM HuCard.

OK, another related question.
Do Hue Card games save at all???
For example, I played Galaga '88 and it let me input my name for a high score, but when I played something else and put the Hue Card back in, my name and high score were gone. Do Hue Cards "auto-erase" when you take them out of the system? And I did not see it on my PC Engine Internal save area either.
If this is in fact the case, is there a way to save data from progress or high scores with Hue Card games???
Thanks :D

Saves from adventure or RPG games are obviously permanent (what would be the point of a saved game that's wiped out of your Back-Up RAM as soon as you turn the system off?). But I believe some shooters or action games don't save your scores at all, even if they allow you to enter your name.

Good point Kaminari...what would be the point of an adventure or RPG if you could not save your progress?
Now that would really be a shame if the Hue Card SHUMPS can't save the high scores some way...that is mainly why I purchased the PC Engine.
Oh well, I guess with a system that old you can't have everything...it's too bad.
At least you can save with the CD-based SHUMP games.

Off the top of my head, I know that Wonderboy III: Monster Lair saves the high scores... but this isn't a proper shooter.

Soldier Blade saves scores.

they're not Hucards, but so do GoT and Forgotten Worlds.

So Steve, where's your list of all the games that use back-up ram???   :)
i guess that's a project for another day...

EDIT:  what other hucard shooters came out in the last couple years of the TG/PCE?
they would be more likely to save scores.
Dead Moon does not.  how bout Magical Chase?

How about the other Hue Card Games I own...
Obviously Galaga88 does not.
But I also has just recently purchased:
1. Time Cruise II
2. Alien Crush
3. R-Type
4. Salamander
5. Kyukyoku Tiger
And I am thinking of buying:
1. Saint Dragon
2. Lode Runner-Lost Labyrinth
3. Super Star Soldier
4. Devils Crush

Dude, you know I'll do this :)

But actually, someone at the TurboList (bt garner says he should be able to rescue the TurboList, but the server crashed and hasn't been revived yet... or something like that) went through TONS of games (the entire U.S. catalog, at least) and provided info on the game saves (i.e. including how much space they occupied).

So, we need the TurboList! Then we can take this fellow's work and make some useful derivitave lists from it :)

Odanadon and Jammaniaclord: you folks don't have this .txt file saved somewhere, do you?

R-type complete CD does not save, so i assume neither does the HuCard.  i don't have any of the other games.
