Title: Offering my services for Turbo/PCE repairs/mods
Post by: turbokon on March 13, 2012, 05:54:07 PM
Hey guy, turbokon here.  I've been a turbo fan since middle school and a member since around 2008 or so and even did some mods for members here and can only remember a few members I've done mods/repairs for.  I'm not always the most active contributor when it comes to posting and all but I do drop in every now and then just to catch up with what is going on here.  I know I will probably get some slacks from veteren hardcore members but I would like to start offering my services again.  I know there are others members here that also provide services but I'm just offer services to lend a helping hand.  I have done region mods, caps overhual and opto isolator replacement in the past and just recently fixed up a non working turbo grafx CD by replacing the laser, all the caps and tweak the pots (with thesteve help).  So if you need any type of these mod/repairs done, I can do it.  I admit that all my knowledge comes from places like this forum and else where online and that I'm not a genius like some, for example "thesteve" and BMW just to name a couple but I am capable in doing a few repairs/mods. I just discovered the lcd/composite video mods and the switchless region mod for the turbo express and have successfully completed the mods.  Again, I would just like to lend a helping hand for a small price of course :D Attach are pictures of the work I've done on my own consoles.

Price List (all prices includes return shipping cost):
Duo complete cap change -$65
TE/GT complete cap change -$35
TE/GT switchless region mod -$45
TE/GT Video out mod - $25
TE/GT 3.5" LCD mod -$55, add $5 for video out
TE/GT with new 2.5" LCD -$45, add $5 for video out
TE/GT external controller port mod - $35
Duo/TG-16/PCE Region mod -$55
Turbografx/PCE audio and composite video out -$25
Turbografx Logo LED Mod- $25
Component video mod via RCA Jacks - $85
Component video mod via mini-din & earphone jack - $65

I will also consider trades in place of cash for mods/repairs.

Just curious to what the mod is for that Suitcase Edition is?
The fat AV plug is now hella lot smaller, and there's an on/off switch to it's left?

Thanks

I PM'ed nat about this, but just posting it here as well for backup. My Turbo Express decided to finally break for good... :( It had been sitting in the shelf for many years and recently I wanted to fire up Super Star Soldier on it as I used to do, but now all that happens is that the backlight comes on when I turn it on, but nothing else happens. The game doesn't boot, no sound, nothing, just a black screen with the backlight powered on. I noticed though that there is still input control and screensaver support; I turned it on and left it alone for a couple of minutes and eventually the backlight would turn off, but when I touch any button or the D-Pad, the backlight turns back on and stays on for a certain about of time.

I read in the repair threads that this might be due to the one video capacitor, so I might actually try replacing that myself, but I wasn't sure it quite applied to the situation because the game doesn't boot at all, there is no sound, etc. Anyway, just wanted to put this out there for someone that fixes Turbo Express units. I may just wanna sell it broken or something and be done with it. To ship it to someone, pay for the labor and the shipping of it back to you, it's probably not worth it and I didn't use it all that much anyway...

If you wait until the VGS in July, there should be a techy there that can take a look at your system.

That sounds like mine before chops fixed it up (both the sound and video caps were dead).  'Twas well worth the pittance he charged, even if I don't use it all that much.
Title: Re: Offering my services for Turbo/PCE repairs/mods
Post by: NightWolve on April 26, 2012, 08:35:52 AM
Ah, OK, so there is a chance it could work again if both video and sound capacitors were replaced ? I looked at some of the guides ( http://www.pcenginefx.com/forums/index.php?topic=5303.0 ) so I might as well give it a shot. Before reading around here, I thought the problem was something worse like the board, ICs, etc. and that it would really need a professional but it looks like there is a typical way that TE units break down, and that the main source of the breakdown is the capacitors.
Title: Re: Offering my services for Turbo/PCE repairs/mods

At this point all the capacitors shoukd be changed.  Dont stop at just the two audio and one video cap.  Thats just a bandaid.  Like was said... its not an expensive repair to have done.
Title: Re: Offering my services for Turbo/PCE repairs/mods

Definitely caps issues. I have worked several of these units before and all they needed were all caps replaced.

Yeah, that sounds like mine before Beamer worked his magic on it.  I tried repairing it on my own but I'm all thumbs with a soldering iron and gave up.  I've had 3 systems worked on by 3 different forum tech-gurus here and all have been very positive experiences, and easy on the wallet (most were done as a trade so I only paid shipping out to them).

Told ya.  These guys aren't in it for the money, but more so to keep us playing.  :)  They can fix your Duo up too.  I've had a few of  mine worked by BlueBMW.  He's added region mods, replaced caps, and added A/V jacks for me on a few systems.  :)

I was able to modify the earphone for stereo sound output with the composite video out.  However i'm getting a lot noise when using a regular earphone. I guess that noise is the video signal. Is there a way around that?

you need to add a new ground contact as the original lines up with the video pin perfect

Also what kind of ac adapter are you using? An ac adapter with less then 700MA will create some hum especially over headphones.

That's is weird, the audio/video cable I'm using has the video lined up with the right sound channel on the express.

Keith, I'm getting good sound when using the audio/video cable. It is when I'm using a regular earphones is when I'm getting the extra noise.

No doubt.  Top notch work and fast.  Did TE and duo cap replacement. Trusting him with these is like trusting him with my kids.

Just got my DUO back.  Had the caps replaced and got a region mod.  Everything Work and looks great.  The sound and picture quality looks better, and it started out pretty good to begin with.
  Thanks again.

actually it works quite well, It's quite natural to reach in and move it, yet I've been playing a lot of hu cards and I haven't accidently hit the switch or anything.  Also with the dust cover closed the unit looks like nothing has been changed.

Hey guy, I gonna have to take a break from doing anymore repairs/mods services for a while. I'm currently neogiating for a job offer in Savannah, Georgie and look like we're getting close. So I need to start thinking about packing and getting my home ready for the market and therefore I'm going to be busy in the coming weeks. I have a few turbobs coming my way to work on and will finish those up before I move. If you guys need any work done, there are a few out there that can certainly help you out. Just to name a few, thesteve, keithcourage, bluebmw, chop5, and sorry if I missed anybody else. Thanks.

Hey Turbo, good luck man.  I spent quite a few drunken days in Savannah.  If you ever get down to the docks, do a shot at Wet Willy's for me!

Turbokon did a wonderful job in fixing my Turbo Duo.  He did a full cap replacement and also solved a memory save issue with the system.  Turned out that there was a missing resistor that was never installed when the system was manufactured.  Turbokon was very diligent in debugging the problem and kept in constant communication with me so that I knew what he was working on.  Thanks to him I can now play my Duo games that use the memory save feature.  Now I just need to beat the high scores that he racked up and saved on my Duo while testing the system to make sure the memory save feature worked.

Thanks again Turbokon.

Turbo that looks awesome.  Question, what is the benefit of this solution versus direct RCA plugs?
Title: Re: Offering my services for Turbo/PCE repairs/mods

Thanks mother

Are you referring to the video quality or the actual rca jacks versus this mini din? I'm going to assume both just in cause. Video quality is like day and night versus the usual RCA (composite, yellow) on a HDTV as this mod utilize the YPrPb input. Using the mini din is less work then trying to mount the RCA jack and I think is better looking too:)

The winning argument for me in sticking with standard RCA jacks versus a mini DIN is that a) you don't need a special, non-standard cable, and b) you don't have to worry about ever losing said special cable. I did lose my SNES Composite/Stereo cable, but that was after I upgraded to the S-Video cable so it didn't matter. Could've used it for testing purposes actually, but oh well.

It can look fine (click for full view), but yeah, it's harder/more work in drilling the holes properly, a guide helps, but even then it's tricky, plus there is a real estate issue or lack thereof (I had to do a few tricks to get 2 rows of jacks like that, plus S-Video).

I actually went with a VGA port and a VGA to composite RCA cable :)

Cool, yeah it's a matter of preference really. I just prefer the mini-din for the TG-16 & pce as they fitt nicely with the existing opening. I usually go with rca's for units like the duo.

Thanks Turbo, quick question.  With your TG Component Mod, would I be able to use the Audio plugs on CD Dock in conjuction with the Component Mod?
Title: Re: Offering my services for Turbo/PCE repairs/mods
Post by: turbokon on May 31, 2013, 08:37:41 AM
Yeah, you'll have to pull the audio from the dock as the redbook (audio track) and adpcm (sound effects) for cd games processed on the dock side.  The component video can be pulled from the TG16 as all video is process by the hu6260. The component board can also be installed in the dock so that you can pull both audio and video from the dock.

Btw, the component boards should arrive today and I will spend the weekend assembling them:)

Thanks Brother, I am curious as to how the mod would look on the back of the dock and whether there is an advantage signal-wise.

Post by: turbokon on May 31, 2013, 10:50:25 AM
No problem bro:)

Signal won't be any different as it's all connected to the hu6260. The problem would be finding the matching rca jacks for the component output.

Hey everyone, new member here! I am the mystery customer that got turbokon's first component mod. Just got by Duo back from him and in short, everything is working great!

Just a little background, I first got my Turbo Duo about 10 years ago. I think it was a new unit, still in the box coming complete with all the pack-in games and everything. When I was home over Christmas I busted it out again and wanted to get back into the scene. I was home again recently and that's when I first noticed some sound issues. I was playing Buster Bros and noticed that while the music was in tact, the sound effects weren't present. Thought that was kind of weird but didn't think a lot of it. By the time I got back here the sound was completely crapping out and that's when I searched out this place for help.

turbokon changed my caps and I also had him do a region mod. He then talked me into doing the component mod as well. I'm glad to say everything is looking fantastic and I would definitely recommend his services if you need your Duo fixed up or souped up.

Oh, and here's a picture that he sent me of the back of my unit with the component jacks and region switch.

Maybe I can do some AV and component comparison pics sometime later.
