Title: Does anyone do other console mods/repairs? Specifically the Game Gear ^_^
Post by: storino03 on May 03, 2012, 07:26:44 AM
I want the capacitors replaced on my Game Gear, and was thinking on doing the TV/Video Out and External Controller Port.

Anyone have experience with doing these? Prices appreciated!

He even repaired my Majesco Game Gear that didn't work from battery power. He's a Game Gear Guru.

I can do Game Gear recaps in addition to stuff for many other systems. A lot of my business consists of NES top loader AV mods and Genesis S-video mods so there's certain stuff I specialize in.

The external TV mod and extra controller mods aren't really as trivial as the cap replacement.  I'm sure chop or the others could probably do it but I'm guessing I'd be pricy.

The controller port mod wouldn't be that hard, but TV out on a Game Gear is a lot more complicated than just wiring some signals to a jack. You need to build a board that converts the GG's video signals into composite, S-video or RGB, then you need to figure out where inside the GG it'll fit, then you need to drill holes in the case for video jacks...

Look what I just bought.

You have to E-mail the guy to ask about availability, but he said I got the last one. Hopefully he will make more.

Can't wait to start on this project. I'm also planning to do the controller input mod.

Huh, I wasn't aware viletim was still selling those. If it's anything like his FM boards he'll make another batch before too long.

Yeah I'd kill for a GG with TV output and controller inputs. As others have mentioned it's a petty complicated mod but it would be so damn awesome to have!!

i suspect it can be simplified (decoder wise), not that you can beat the PLA version

I'm thinking the TV output mod isn't going to be too hard with Viletim's board. Looking at his diagrams it looks so clean and simple! Hope I'm not speaking too soon...

I've seen a gamegear replaced with a 3.5 inch LCD, so it can be done, but the image is cropped so it does not fill in the whole screen.

I'll have to see about emailing that guy about the TV board.

That bastard, Motherf*cker Mike at Cinemassacre.com had to go and make a video about the Game Gear with a link to the TV board page, so I'm guessing that guy is getting a lot more business now. Damn. I wanted to be cool and be one of the only ones to have one of these.

It's cool, though, that more people will be able to experience the GG library on a decent monitor... sans emulation...

controller port shouldn't be too bad, with that video board that Viletum sells that shouldn't be too bad either.

Hmm I just bought a Game Gear, eventually I might tweak it around. Any exclusive games on this worth getting?

Not sure about exclusive but i love the shining force series.  I also really like the poker pauls series of card games.

Well, there's Tail's Adventure, GG Shinobi, GG Fantasy Zone, Defenders of Oasis, Crystal Warriors (I think the name is).

And then there's a bunch of Sega Genesis ports, like Little Mermaid, Lion King, Pocahontas, etc.

now that my brain's unfrozen, Gunstar heroes GG is really good as well. pretty amazed they captured the genesis version very well on the portable.

If you like the Genesis version, Ristar for GG is also pretty good.
