"TurboGrafx-16, fully titled as TurboGrafx-16 Entertainment SuperSystem and known in Japan as the PC Engine (PCエンジン Pī Shī Enjin?), is a video game console developed by Hudson Soft and NEC, released in Japan on October 30, 1987, and in North America on August 29, 1989."

Just want to get an idea on the ages of our community. If this is off-topic in any way, let me know!
According to the August 29th, 1989 US release, I was...4.5 lol. But my family went the more "mainstream route" in terms of consoles, and we started with the Nintendo and then Gameboy, Genesis, PS1, and so on. Unfortunately, that caused me to miss a lot of the niche games and other consoles, but I have most of them now! Hard part is building up the library at a reasonable rate to cost ratio.

4 days shy of 9.
-
Old enough.
-
I won't even be built until 2942, but I'm gonna say 12.
-
A ripe 12 year old lad. My body was beginning to change, confusing feelings and thoughts, but my Turbo was there to ease me through the transitions.
-
Four months short of thirteen years old.
Just old enough to fully appreciate the 16-bit generation. :)

I guess I would have been 16.
Btw, I f*cking hate it when Wiki entries romanize things that are already in English. It's so f*cking cosplay fangirl arigatogomenadai-sama. Guh...

I had just turned 11 when I got my TG16 (they got me Blazing Lazers as well) for Christmas in 89'. All my friends had NES's, and my parents wanted me to have something different. Plus, their NES's were only 8 bit while the Turbo was 16!
-
8? 9-ish? thereabouts
-
11 or 12 i remember getting it and me and my friend wanting to play a game but seen i controller port and was like WTF LOL. just funny that even 11 - 12 year olds know you need to have 2 controller ports.
-
6 when the PCE came out, 8 when the US TG16 came out.
-
i was 13. no worries, just had to get up and go to school. and play tg16.
-
Nine when it came out, twelve when I bought one.
A ripe 12 year old lad. My body was beginning to change, confusing feelings and thoughts, but my Turbo was there to ease me through the transitions.
Are you saying that you tried to put your hoo-hoo dilly in the hucard slot?? Qué asco!
-
I was 12 but couldn't afford to buy a Turbo Grafx until a few years after the release.
-
I was a few months shy of two years old when the TG16 was released, and a 7 month old fetus when the PCE was released! A bit young, but I was still excited when I was reading about the PCE in VG&CE while in the womb.
-
Thirteen. Didn't get it until I was fourteen, though.
-
I turned 14 almost exactly two weeks before the release of the Turbografx-16, but I don't think I picked one up until 1990. I was probably still 14 though. I remember being a freshman in High School when I got it. Good times. Had an after school job and a Sunday morning paper route back in those days and had no bills to speak of, so I got to indulge in video games in a way that makes now-me jealous of then-me. :)
-
12 years old. There was a demo unit at the local electronic boutique playing keith courage. 23 years later I'm finally getting one courtesy of beemer! Can't wait!
-
12 at the pce and 14 at the TG release.
-
Teens if i remember right by that point.
-
13+ when it came out, but didn't get one until I was 14.
-
12 and 14 seem to be the common numbers here.
-
9 for the PCE & 11 for the TG
Although the PCE was never released in my country (Australia) and I bought my first PCE console in 2010, been hooked ever since.
-
I was just a few weeks old when the TG-16 came out and I didn't get my first one until I was 17.
-
10, didn't get one until I was 31.
-
Old enough to appreciate it and want one.
-
lol, I guess some people in this thread don't want to reveal their true age :)
-
i was 1. had no idea back then how awesome the system was.
-
12. But I didn't get one until I was 26. I'm almost 35 now...
Chris
-
100 ish
-
15, I was born in 1974. got mine with ¿21?
-
I was 10 ( born in '79)
Didn't get a Duo til 1994. I was 15.
TZD had all the best games for $49.99 sealed, and all sorts of buy 2 get 1 sales. It was the best time to get all the best games.
-
16 when I bought mine. My first games were Bonk's Adventure, and Splatterhouse. I remember buying the console at Consumers Distributing (retail store), but reading through the internet I've read they were only available at Radio Shack. Either way, I had one, and the TG-16 was probably the only console I ever bought remotely close to the official release day.
-
I was 4... got the system when I was 5... brainwashed by the kiosk in front of our local Radio Shack in Halifax, NS.
-
wow. your parents bought you a TG16 one year after its release at an age of 5? what nice folks.

He was 7 Factorial. So 5040 years old. :)
I had just turned 13 when the Turbo came out. However I didn't even know what it was until the end of the next year. It was all NES in 1989.
-
I was 1

I looked forward with great expectation to Sears Christmas catalogs every year, during the 80's.

lol Holy shit that was funny. Wasn't expecting that.... NERD!
obligatory response: 14 at release, got my TG around 25, but only recently filled that Duo-sized hole in my life at 36
-
I was only 12. when it got released. My brother and I got the TG-16 pretty close after launch, thanks to me saving my lunch money, and my brother getting a jobby job.
-
I got mine in '94 as result of 3 weeks saving from hard labor in the Christmas Tree sheering fields. spent the rest of the summer working to buy moar gaemz!!
When I jumped in, I got a Duo w/ 1 controller, Gates 3 in one, Ninja Spirit, Ys 1&2, Sonic Spike, World Class Baseball, Legendary Axe, Victoly Run, and TV sports Football. All that for $200.
-
So it came out one day after I turn 11. I think we picked it up a couple years later.

Not a bad haul for only 200 monies. 8)

It came out on my 11th birthday. You're 1 day older than me lol.
-
12 at the pce and 14 at the TG release.
Ha! I was 14 when TG-16 was released (and I got it the day after XMAS 1989).

hahaha..lol. I got used to the silly US of A time format
so that makes you exactly 35 days older than me, damn. (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png)

That's why we need more members like CAS—so we won't feel like we are the oldest bastards here. I still have a hard time seeing lilgrafx (who is 4.5 years old, max) posting comments here. I wasn't nearly as literate as he is when I was 4 years old.
-
I was 5 in 89. Didnt get a turbo til I was in High School in 1999 or so.
-
Wow! I didn't expect such a diverse age group when it comes to turbo/pce gaming! I was 7 years old when the turbo came out here in the U.S.

Does it help that I learned how to read while playing Dragon Warrior at age 5? :P

Bah. Whippersnappers. I was 27 in 1989. Bought a tg16 that Christms, or the next.
Does it help that I learned how to read while playing Dragon Warrior at age 5?
That's partly how my nephew learned to read, though not on Dragon Warrior.
His first grade teacher flipped when he read Winnie The Pooh to her. She thought he memorized it.
So she gave him some old kids reader she had, and almost died when he read that to her.
("Did you know Jason could Read?!?!". "Of course he can. Did you think he was stupid?".
"Most kids his age don't even know their ABC's!". "That's their problem..." )
-

It came out on my 11th birthday. You're 1 day older than me lol.
Hahaha, that's cool!
-
Whew I'm not the oldest :-"
I was 23 when the TG-16 came out so if I rule out the 100 year old (ish) which I think is safe :D I would be second oldest after TheOldMan.
-
I was six when the TG16 came out.
I may have been young, but my initials were definitely already prominently featured at my local arcades.
-
I was 11 on that date, but turned 12 in October of that year and got one for Christmas. It was the ONLY thing on my list and the only thing that mattered to me at the time. A friend and I were at the Fred Meyer in Marysville, WA and caught my mom walking out with it, so I knew I was getting one before that day even though she teased me saying that since I'd seen it she took it back to the store.
The next year I got the TG-CD with Y's Book 1 & II and Sherlock Holmes. It was a huge surprise because $400 for my family at the time was quite expensive. My dad always like to go overboard on Christmas though because his always sucked as a kid.
-
In Fall of 1989 I was 10. Didn't actually get one until Summer 1998, when I was 19.
-
I was 17......got my TG-16 in 1990.
-
Ill turn 34 in a couple of months, so either 9 or 11 then.
-
5 or 6. When I was miniraven
-
Just a youngling at 3
-
the ripe old age of 13
-
Almost 3 years old, but I did beat Ghostbusters on the 2600 when I was 3 and I still remember defeating the final boss.
-
I think you see some diverse ages because while some people actually had TG16 marketed in their region, some of us including me never heard about the TG16/PCE until much later. Emulation and the internet is how I learned of its existence probably back in 1999 or 2000. And you can thank Castlevania for that. It got me interested in the system and since I've played many other great games for the platform.
Back when the TG16 was alive, I was busy playing either the Atari 800 home computer, NES and later SNES. If I'd have seen a Turbo DUO playing Lords of Thunder back then I would definitely have wanted one. I recall they had some promo where they tried to promote the DUO with that game.
-
I was almost 11 :)
-
Does it help that I learned how to read while playing Dragon Warrior at age 5? :P
In my case I learned english with videogames (RPG). Dragon Warior, Phantasy Star, Neutopia.
-

Oh, and I was 10 when the TG came out. Coincidentally that was the year I got an NES. :) Then I patiently (or not so patiently) waited 5 years later to spend my hard earned moneys on a Turbo Duo when I was 15!!
-
Hmm... 16. But I only got one when the DUO launched.
-
I was 12 when it came out and got it for my 13th birthday that october.
-
I was 20 in 1989.
Joined USMC right out of school, and was in S Korea by 89. Probably got my turbo 93 or so, used and with about 4 games.
-
I was 14. Got Turbo in 1989.
-
I was born on that exact day. Yay me!
-
I was in the -5 era.
-
According to the August 29th, 1989 US release, I was 14.
It was later that year for Christmas that we got our first video game system - the NES.
-
I was 11. Did not play one untill I was 13 I did not know anyone with one.
-
wow, xray is a real turboldtimer then :)
it also seems, that we have some few 75er in here :)
-

imo, 75 was the best year to be born. :D Speaking of which, it's my birthday today. I expect an LT in the mail any day now.
EDIT: Please send me your LT if you haven't. Thanks.
-
73 here a little older. Been playing games since Atari 2600 in '79 and got my own 2600 a year later si my cousin wouldn't have to share his system.
-
Happy birthday roflmao! :D Respect to my elders! :)
-
I was 9 and I believe there was an earthquake in 89 in san fran i was taking swimming lessons when it hit and i was having a blast with the waves. They went up to the top of the roof. All the grils were crying in the corner with the swimming instructor. Also the year my A's swept the Giants with the bash brothers.
-

You can call me gramps !
I started playing video games, like millions of others, with space invaders, centipede and asteroid.
1st counsel of course was atari tennis. Lame as it may seem now, it was pretty amazing back then, burned quite a few hours bouncing that little ball around. Got a kick out of that tank game too.
Things progressed when "Joust" came around, me and my buddies were hooked on that damn thing, dropped fist fulls of quarters in that thing for weeks on end.
One day a neighbor says "hey, you want to play some mario ??" I said "mari-what ? Never heard of it, what is it" ? He was like, oh shit, you never heard of mario, well come and try this. So I got hooked on that for a while, but soon I was out and about in military service, and didn't have the time or inclination for any gaming.
When I was settled down a bit years later, I started thinking of getting a system, I dismissed the obvious, Nintendo, right away. Games were Ok, but everyone I knew that had one, the unit fried out sooner or later. They'd be blowing in them, shaking them, swabbing out the contacts with alcohol or spit, screen blinked, faded or went black ,, And I saw more than 1 guy get sick and tired of it and smash it against a wall. I had heard of TG, and heard the hoopla about being the 1st 16 bit system, and I always have been the type to root for the underdog, so Turbo it was - And I'd say I made a damn good choice.
Picked up a used unit with 4 games, and proceeded to build it to a collection of over 60, saved all the boxes ,,, Never looked back.
Alot of guys here bitch about the pricing trends of Turbo, I'm on the fence on that issue. But it shows 1 thing beyond a doubt - These games are in demand.
There is a strong market for them, which may increase, may decrease ,,, Whatever trends that develop in the months and years to come, TG has stood the test of time, and I am glad to have been an original part of that, and am glad to have the interest now, almost 2 decades down the road.
-
I am glad I am not the oldest one here. Ha! (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png)
However, I am still too old to have not played through all the games I thought I would have beaten by now (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgsad.png)

you're a 75er too, right? when's your BD? :D

ALSO: Widnau is the only canton that matters. Accept this fact.
-
hmmm...89 was it? So, I think 12 years old.
EDIT:  just realized that I already answered earlier in this thread.
-
I was 1.
-1 if you talk about TEH PCE
-
I was twelve when the TurboGrafx-16 came out and thirteen when I bought it after selling my NES and Master System.
-
I was 6 months old when PCE was released and 2 when the TG16 came to the US. My dad got one out of the news paper in 1990 with 8 games or so, he thought it was neat and would eventually be bigger than the nintendo, as the "future of video games" if only more people had realized this early on. First game I ever played - Bonk's Adventure (take that mario), however based on the SNES they bought me just a few years later, they couldn't find turbo stuff at a reasonable price. Anyway, I never let the turbo die, been playing it on and off for 22 years now. Not sure why, but there is something magical about the system.
-
Not sure why, but there is something magical about the system.
I know why, but I can't express it fully with mere words.
Or, perhaps I can.

I was 9. I didn't get a tg16 for a couple years tho. A video rental store that rented them was stopping and had several brand new systems in the back that they kept in case one of the rental systems was damaged. I scored one for $60 after doing many chores to raise the money. It was probly '91 or '92. I knew the first time I turned it on there was something special about the TG16.
-
1 day shy of being 4 years old, my birthday being 8/30/85
-
Why do I always look at this thread? Why do I want to be reminded of how old we are?
Even the young folks are too old.
-
Couple months shy of 14 years old when the TG16 came out.
-
I was 9 years old when the Us Turbografx16 came out in 89 ...
-
I was 14 and I had just gotten my first job washing dishes. That was the only way I was able to get one.
-
If it was August 29th, then I was 7 years and 2 days old. :) Back then, though, the only thing on my radar was NES. I was probably busy watching my brother play stuff like Castlevania II, Zelda II, and Bionic Commando. Probably playing Super Mario Bros. 2 myself.
-

I sadly sold my NES and games to fund the purchase of TG-16. I have argued that this (beginning of 16-bit generation) was a great time for NES-owners. I played tons of great games released for NES at this time. It was bittersweet--I loved TG-16 and Genesis--but some of the best games in those early years were on the NES.
-
14, just about to start High School
-
I would have been 4 Years old in August of 1989
-
I was 13.
