So, today I got in a package from our fellow forum member, Dlite. And....in it, he provided a nice bonus.. A Neo Geo Pocket Color, along with several games.
Now, I have never even seen one of these things, so I quickly fired it up with some fresh AA batteries.. However, I got some sort of warning about internal memory or some shit. Anyway, I read the manual he included with it, to find that it also needs a CR2032 for the systems internal memory. No biggie, went out and got one and installed. Now, this little bitch is nice. I mean, its REALLY nice. The only fault I have with it is no back light, but other than that, I like it a lot. I really like the analog stick. It's nice and tight, has a nice little indention for your thumb to rest, and is VERY responsive thus far. I feel that the sound could have been a little better, but ehhh, that's a minor gripe really. All in all, I am pleased with it. Like I said, the ONLY thing I can say that I do not like about it, is the screen not having some sort of back light. My old eyes be hurting playing this biatch..
Finishing off, I would like some input on the system. Basically, what games would you suggest? I am into adventure type games mainly and basically have NO idea about this system at all. I have also titled the thread here, non Nec Stuff, so that in the future if I decide to post about other non NEC systems/games, I wont have to start another thread. Take it easy guys, and be sure to wish BlueBMW a happy birthday today!!! He getting old....

Most of them are arcade games, puzzlers, or fighters. Definitely lacking in the action/adventure department.
-
Does that include Japanese releases? I understand this system is region free.
-
Yes, about 5-10 of those are Japanese released games. I haven't used my system in a while but I believe I have every US released title.
-
I got this list from a website and just noticed that they only listed Becky's version of Dive Alert...there was also a Matt's version. They might have missed some other titles too.
-
my Suggestion Bernie is that you do a frontlight mod. Just find somebody capable of doing it and I think you might not regret it. Read up on it, the screen becomes as bright as the original gameboy advance sp if I am not mistaken

so is it like a GBA screen/graphics wise?

Get sonic pocket adventure it's a stellar platformer. Tell me how metal slug is I haven't picked up any games for it sine I got it last year.
I agree about the screen I use a reading lamp to see the screen, definitively brought me back the days of the first model GBA.

It's a bit weaker than the GBA, it came out around two years earlier. It's better than a Game Boy Color or Wonderswan color. But worse than the GBA.
-
Ugh, this thing brings back terrible memories. I had high hopes for it and picked one up with 15 games for $100. What a piece of shit. No backlight makes it impossible to see and the blur was worse than OG gameboy. I threw the whole lot out in the garbage and the trash man wouldnt even take it

I have the Sonic one. :) I will let you know about the Metal Slug.

Are you talking about the color or the b/w version. There is ZERO blur on the color one. None. No blur whatsoever.
The lack of a backlight is a bummer, but considering no handheld in 1998 had a backlight it's hardly out of the ordinary.
Another thing: the stick is not analog. I'm not sure how anyone could think it is since it clearly goes "click" with every micro switch actuation. It's a four switch, eight direction joystick just like a real Neo Geo. It's also by far the best f*cking stick to be built into anything. I can tick FAB with Zangief all day and all night on this bitch.
As for game recomendations, aside from the pachinko shite you can't really go wrong. Much like the full scale Neo the vast majority games is somewhere between good and awesome.
My favorites:
Match of the Millenium (duh!)
Gals Fighters
Card Fighters 2
Ganbare Neo Poke-kun
Neo Turf Master (yes, even the sports stuff is good)
Neo Geo Cup '98 Plus Color
Last Blade
More notes:
Front light mods really take away from the clarity and the lighting itself won't be that great. If you are in total darkness, obviously the "FLU mod" is great but if you are outdoors or on an airplane or in a bathroom, it's best stock.
Performance wise the unit sits between GBC and GBA. Its kinda comparible with Wonderswan Color. The WS can put a lot more color down, has bigger ROMs, higher resoltion, better sound, etc but for some reason rarely manages to actually entertain anywhere near as well as an NGP.
It was a f*cking great system that was killed off early because of financial difficulties at SNK at the time and the political BS of Aruze basically trying to destroy the company at the time. Even though, considering how short lived the thing was the number of games that are still super fun is amazing.
-
Yeah, I knew it wasnt exactly analog.. But its what I called it. :) Its pretty accurate for what it is. I like it. I cannot complain about the system, even the lack of back lighting isnt really a deal breaker.

The Wonderswan color has a horrible horrible screen that's much much worse than the Neo-Geo Pocket Color screen. While it is more powerful, it's less usable. (I can't comment on how much better the screen on the SwanCrystal is as I've not tried it).
And yeah, I agree it was a fun system. We should probably mention that Aruze basically just bought SNK for their distribution network so they could sell more Pachinko and Pachislo machines and had no intention of keeping SNK products coming for any extended period of time.
-
What games do I recommend? All of them! Seriously, there are very few bad games for the system. If you aren't hung up about having complete games, there are tons of cheap new loose games available on ebay. I think I got 1/3 of the system's library for like $30 in one auction a while back.
Also, to give you a little background on what you got, I bet your system and games come from one of those blister packs that they used to sell at Electronics Boutique after the NGPC went south. Basically, the boxes and documentation were dumped, loose (but new) systems and games were put in blister packs and sold for a discount, it was an awesome deal.
I really, really love the NGPC. I never play mine since it's too dark in my living room, and when I attempted to front light mod the system I messed up the GBA frontlight, so it's all kinds of fugly.
-
The Swan Color screen is pretty bad. Very blury. The Swan Crystal screen is a non-backlit active matrix TFT screen very much like the NGPC's. It's actually a much better screen than the NGPC's, since its larger, wide, has more resolution, and more color. Final Fantasy 1 looks like a SNES FF game on the WS, no joke.
The Swan still lacks big-time compared to the NGP though. The Swan is pretty much only useful to people like me who are big fans of Bandai stuff.

Do you have a 3DS? because I find the thumb pad on that to be fantastic.
-
My son has one, and I just cannot get into it. The thumb pad is nice on it, but I am just not sold on the system itself.

I need to pick up a SwanCrystal at some point so I can actually see what's going on in Makaimura. Both the B&W and Color model are just too hard to see with to fully enjoy that game.
