just finished my latest classic gameboy backlight project. i bought one of the new v3 ultrabright backlights from noninfinite. I also biverted the screen using a tutorial i found online. last night i played bonk's adventure awhile. You know, its not the turbo version, but its very well done. even the music is reasonably faithful.

is there a better kit for the Gameboy Advance units? I have an afterburner but it looks terrible.

My God why waste the time? The SP and SP2 are so completely great and cheap everyone should own a dozen of them.

I got those, its the system my 3 year old plays with.

How does the SP & SP 2 compare to playing GBA games on a DS? Aside from the fact that DS doesn't run full screen, I mean :(
Are the colors more washed out and is there ghosting? The DS ghosts slightly.
-
you make a very good point. The sp's are cheap, most likely cheaper than an afterburner unit if you could find one. My only complaint with the sp's is the screen. I own two of them and they are just not as clear as my advance. then again the lack of backlight at all on the advance is almost unforgivable. this is why i prefer the classic gameboy's. with a proper backlight they look fantastic.
-
Own all of them (the DS is a DSi).
I don't tend to use the DS too much for GBA games, but when I do it's perfectly pleasant. In terms of screen quality, the heirarchy is:
GBA
GBA SP
GBM
GBA SP 101
The GBM and SP 101 are about the same level, and I prefer the micro just for portability, but the large screen on the SP does increase clarity.

Therefore i have three gb pocket light :)

The SP is a front light, so like all front lights it tints the image. In this case the tint is blue. Some games actually have coloring options where you can change the palette to compensate for which GBA you have. I actually grew to like the blue tint, honestly, but I can see why some people wouldn't.
The SP2 is totally different. Its a backlight screen, pretty much like a huge Gameboy Micro. Sadly there is there is still a hint of that green that the DS Lite has so while its a very very crisp image, I don't like the temperature as much.
Then there is the Micro, which is something I love at least as much as the SP. The screen is small but its nearly Retina in its sharpness. OK, so its not that close Retina at all actually, but it is amazingly clear.

I think I prefer the holding position and trigger placement on the Classic over the SP models, even though I have an SP. A proper lit classic screen would make the classic the ultimate device. Well, that and some rechargeable batteries. The SP is pretty awesome that way, too.

Totally agreed. The micro is even worse, I just 100%'d Yoshi's Island on one and got some serious claw-hand :D

I did this with mine last year, using the same kit. It really is awesome, the thing is FINALLY visible in pretty much any light, and the original model of Gameboy is so comfortable to my adult hands. I'd like to get my hands on a GB Pocket sometime and mod it, but I don't even have a system right this second.
As far as GBA, the best way to play is the SP2 IMO. It's not perfect for reasons outlined above, but it does look pretty damn great. The closest thing you could compare it to is the DS Lite, although I don't like playing most games on the DS Lite due to awkward GBA button placement and the tiny D Pad.
-
awesome! yeah, there is not much better things in the world than a backlit/biverted DMG
-
I wanted to do this to mine. Can you post some links to the kit and instructions you used?

this is the link i use

I really like my backlit dmg. its comfortable like jkm said, and the screen looks great.
this is the link to biverte the screen

If your going to biverte the screen, please use white. otherwise it might now show up.
otherwise i have a cherry red backlight kit if you want it punkic, i warn you though, its hard on the eyes with some games.

Why mod when it already exist ex works? :)

The Micro is my favorite design, but I find that the screen quality is a turn off and the resolution appears lower than the hardware, kinda like the Turbo Express. The SPs though appear to perfectly represent GBA graphics pixel for pixel. Between the two, I prefer the brighter image of the SP2, as it makes it easier to actually see the game in darker conditions.
-
Oh Rly? I think the micro's resolution looks amazing (just due to its small size) and the all around picture quality is the best I have seen so far from all the GBs ever released. In fact I even think the first DS screen was worse.
-
the micro's resolution is amazing, just to small for me. the sp1 in my opinion looked like crap, the sp2 looks just fine. if you want to play more modern gb games you cant got wrong with the sp2 or micro if you like the smaller screen. otherwise if you like classic gameboy games, an original dmg backlit and biverted is irreplacible.
-
The SP1 is a little washed out, but I still like it just fine. Certainly easier to see than the original design with no lighting whatsoever.
-
I've never played an SP2, but I love my SP1. :) I was playing Final Fantasy Tactics on it just this afternoon! And some Mario Kart yesterday. And some F-Zero the day before that...
Few consoles, handheld or otherwise, have gotten as much use as my GBA SP, which I've owned since about the time it was released. It is up there with my TG-16 and SNES.
I am very tempted to hunt down an SP2, but I'd have a hard time letting go of my SP1 just because of all the time I've spent using it over the past decade (or so).
-
I know i'm gonna get flamed for this but i was never a fan of the gba advance. the classic gameboy holds more weight in my heart by far. I would most certianly rather be playing my pc engine gt (with its new screen, thanks steve.......please forgive the shameless plug :) )
-
Herc can you post some pics of your project?
-
Punkic, the worst thing i have to deal with is a shitty camera. i can get a picture of the gameboy, but i cant get one of the screen. the camera just cant get it. I'm more than willing to help you with the project if your gonna take it on. unfortunately, i cant seem to get decent pictures of my results. This is the best picture my camera can do.
-
Here is a pic of mine. The camera doesn't really do it justice.

Looks good. Mine is much different, it would look like a photo negative of yours as the screen is biverted. Instead of having a bluish color all the way around, the sprites have a yellowish green color and are highlighted. some games its alitttle to much, but most it makes them much easier to see.
-

Given than the PCE can only output an analog signal its no surprise that the GTs screen resolution doesn't match the PCE's. I'd bet money the GB Micro is pixel for pixel, not just because it looks like it is, but because I would be more difficult and expensive to not do it that way.
Personally, until the iPhone 4 I'm not sure I had ever seen a screen that dense and with such a reasonable dot pitch. The thing is amazing. Maybe yours is broken? Even when playing Japanese RPGs on it I can see the limitations of the GBAs resolution taking their toll before the screen does.
