mainly looking for games i wouldn't even think to play either because i cannot pronounce the name or maybe the cover art is unappealing. let me know what you kids know!

These are the PCE SCDs I have that are fun to play, didn't cost an arm and a leg, and don't have a language barrier (my library isn't very big):
Cotton - Sorry, didn't realize this game seems to sell for quite a bit these days on ebay. I Picked it up awhile ago (10+ years) and it was probably $20 or thereabouts. I just assumed it was still relatively affordable.
Crest of Wolf (Riot Zone in the US)
Gradius II
Neo Nectaris (sequel to Military Madness)
Puyo Puyo (puzzle game in the Tetris/Columns vein)
Star Parodier (awesome cute-em-up based on the Soldier series)
Regular CD games:
Sidearms Special
SPRIGGAN * - this one is awesome and feels like an SCD
And if you can score a copy of the ACD bootie Sapphire here in the forums for free or cheap it's really worth picking up an Arcade card. The game is jaw-droppingly awesome.
The rest of my disc based games are either US games or require understanding of Japanese (which I currently don't have). I have spent a fair amount of time playing Magicoal, though I'm currently stuck. And I bet I could figure out Master of Monsters if I put my mind to it. It looks like a great turn-based strategy game so I'm sure I will one of these days.
EDIT: Didn't realize how much PCE Cotton was going for on eBay - maybe you can find it for less here on the forums.

expensive suggestions are ok, system plays back ups just like normal games as long as i use a good 650mb cd and a nice bin cue rip

Shadow of the Beast.

Terraforming and Vasteel aren't Super CD's! [-X
Götzendiener - reminds me of The Immortal
Galaxy Deka Gayvan - 2-player brawler
Magicoal - Secret of Mana style
Kabuki Itouryodan - not SCD, but it's the best tournament fighter exclusive to the Arcade Card and not terribly expensive!
-
Right, I can't remember it's they're super or not, but you HAVE to get Pomping World. It's cheap enough, but more to the point, it's a bargain. If it was double the going rate, I'd snap it up in a second.
I actually bought Super Buster Brothers/Pang for the SNES just a few month before, but Pomping World is better.

So are Chuka Taisen and Gekisha Boy silly.
I meant to separate titles by format while throwing that list together.
The main point was games that a non-expert might not think of playing.
I also thought that Magicoal looked like Secret of Mana before playing it, but it's actually a stage by stage overhead shooter like Ikari Warriors, Mercs, etc.

Oh sweet! it did look pretty neat. Check out Fray CD Xak Gaiden then. Once you get used to the controls and pace, it's a pretty fun game. I will have to look into Magicoal.

It's just marketing hype - Terraforming is a "bi-compatible" title (like Sherlock Holmes 2), but you'll see no difference between it playing on 2.0 and 3.0 machines.

I'm pretty sure it's also standard CD-Rom compatible too.

NEC lied to me

feel free to keep them coming, as i really appreciate the direction, and these threads are useful to others as well!

Yeah it's and underrated title in my opinion. Not the best on the system but fun to play and it definitely has a unique feel to it.

I just played through Bakushou Yoshimoto Shinkigeki (http://pcengine.co.uk/HTML_Games/Bakusho_Yoshimoto.htm), and I think it deserves a place in this thread. It's a platformer that focuses on humor. While there are a lot of jokes that require Japanese knowledge, there are enough visual gags to keep it funny even if your Japanese skills are lacking. The boss battles are all different minigames, and while the instructions are in Japanese, one can figure out how they work pretty quickly. The only part that's a real pain is the last boss battle, which is a quiz game where you have to jump up to the answer buttons before your oponent. You can beat it by picking random answers until you get three right, but it takes a little while. It isn't that long of a game, but at the fairly cheap prices you can get it (my copy was 290 yen), I'd say it's worth picking up.

i have tried it, but i did not really get into it. it's pretty heavily recommended, so i will definitely give it another shot. i've been in shooter mode lately honestly. conquered a huey shootie, w ring : the double rings. pretty solid if i say so myself! star parodia has also taken a bit of my time
