Title: CD game compatibility with system cards and systems
Post by: fraggore on June 11, 2012, 10:08:55 AM
hello im have been revisiting the valis games and found that valis 4 wont load next cutscenes after the boss on level 1 on my duo-r with and without the arcade card but works fine on my turbografx 16 cd with system card 2.0. I have herd of some cd games needing certain system cards to work altered best being one of them.

So just wondering if there is more of them or if any of you on here have had similar problems ?.
Can you just use a older system card and they will play fine ?

P.S i realy cant beleave how cheesy the voice overs are on the us version of valis 3 i had only played the jap one i maybe wrong the jap voice overs cant be that cheesy if only i could understand Japanese.

I don't recall hearing of Valis IV causing troubles, but I have heard of problems with A. III, Shadow of the Beast, Bonanza Bros., and the aforementioned Altered Beast.

I had no trouble finishing Valis IV on my U.S. Duo.
I could be wrong, but I doubt the trouble you're having is related to the system card.

Did this problem happen more than once? If you've only seen it crash once I'd assume it was a read error. They do happen on PCE.

i thought it might a read error but happens every time only on valis 4 its not the duo its plays everything any disks its the TG16 cd that's the fussy one go figure.

Weird. Someone else with a Duo-R and Valis IV could confirm whether or not it works.
I would, but I'm not in the same place as my Valis IV right now, and also I only have a Duo-RX, no Duo-R (though it probably doesn't make a difference).

Yea you just beat the boss the screen goes dark with the boss music playing and that's it.
Wouldn't think the duo rx makes a diffrence as they pretty much the same machine just a diffrent pad from what I have read. Well when the card turns up will give it another try.

You should assume that most/all issues are from playing a cdr copy and take them as part of the compromise of playing a cdr game. If you get a scratchless original copy and have issues, then I'd post tech support questions.

Original discs are written in a specific manor. I tried using downloads, and they work fine on emulator, but on
a real PCE unit, they crash at a various points, Big waste of disc recording, because they do not last, especially with the laser difference.

The thing with cdr copies, whether they are directly copied from an original disc or are burned off of an iso/mp3 rip, is that literally any kind of random problem can arise and inconsistantly and every individual PCE CD-ROM unit handles them differently. So just take any problem-free periods as a plus when playing cdrs and accept issues when they come up. If a game seems worth buying after trying it out, then you can factor in the lower-hassle as part of the value when shopping.

Yeah, and there really aren't many games where the system card causes issues like this. Normally, the system card should be one of the last things to suspect.

Since I delete some save games and now have space left to save been working fine looks like it just couldn't save so doesn't load.

Wondering if this can effect other games ? No space to save like.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I remember hearing about some games that will just crap out totally from a lack of save space and not really explain it to the user. I can't remember which ones though.

Since you are saying this happens after level 1, maybe this is the first time it tries to create a save file.

After defeating the boss and getting to level 2 turn it off start it back up and the save starts at the beginning of level 2 that's the first save as it doest save it before then.
