Title: New video of billyboy intro
Post by: touko on June 21, 2012, 07:31:45 AM
Hi, i have made a new video of the intro .. New sprites are added (plus new billyboy sprite), more parallaxes and better arranged, no slow down on fade in overture .
You can see it here :
Of course many things will be added later.

I'm still staring at the clouds, and now I want to play Shadow of the Breast some more.

I love it. I have only two criticisms. One, I think you should use chiptunes instead of the Amiga-styled tune. Two, the characters moving toward you are moving more slowly than the ground under them, despite appearing to run or jump along it.

Intentional? Freudian slip? :)
Anyway, love the look of the game. Don't know anything about it yet, so I need to look around. Just curious, is the change from day to night going to be part of the game? If so, is it possible to darken the color of the ground/sprites to correspond to the transition to night? Not saying the color has to change with each sky transition, but everything appears to still be well lit, even with the sun down.
Looks very cool, though.

Thanks, this project will probably an action/plateformer. But i made it very slowly, for now this is not a priority, mainly because my main pixel artist, FLOW, is very busy at ubi .

Awesome! Looks like you used that old Bonk paralax demo as a basis! I always wanted to see more from that old demo, I forget who coded that, now I'll have to fire up the rom to see.
Ok, just checked the demo, looks like it was made by someone named Eagan Rackley?? Doesn't sound familiar, but he mentions utopiasoft, along with thanking people like Dave Shaddof, Chris Covell, Fag Emul, Gravis, Zeograd, & Nightwolve. It looks like that demo was made in 2002, man, how time flies!

ah ah you remember this demo  ..
Bonk demo was made by eagan ,and yes i was inspired from this demo to mine . I just pushed the concept further.
You can compare with my old one :
Yes this is old, and 2002 sound like the time when pce/tg16 scene was more active .

very cool touko!
The reflections in the water are awesome - particularly the girl jumping rope. Great depth feel there.
Any thought of reflecting some of the background too? since the top of the wall is about to the height of his eyes, you could put it at chin level on the reflection. Then you could show the kid jumping behind the wall and maybe the tops of some trees.

No,i canot easily .. If i had a second layer, of course, perhaps on a SGX version lol .
Yeah, that's one of my favorite demo's from years ago! Your demo has alot more going on though!
Yes i think too, this demo is one of the coolest of this period . Short but very interesting (parallaxes, psg music, cool effects etc ..), it changes of all same basic slideshow present on zeograd .
Eh this not a demo, it's a future game intro [-(

Also, is it wrong if I associate "Billyboy" with "courtship"/Carter USM/german contraceptives?
LOL, why ?? In french billyboy is a sort of common name like john doe in us ..

I think you mean John Smith. I've never heard of anyone actually named John Doe. A John Doe is someone who has no identification, & if awake, doesn't know who they are. Same thing with Jane Doe for women.

Well... I'll let you search the term "billyboy" and see what you find (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcg0.html)
Amongst other things, "Billyboy" can refer to a brand of condoms. I wouldn't know about this if it weren't for the coverart (http://www.theboyinwales.com/carter/newcross.jpg) of the single for .

John smith is a real name, not billyboy, it's the same kind of john doe . You named a guy billyboy, or johnnyboy, when you don't know his real name ;-) .
LOL a condom, it's not a bad idea, to replace billyboy actual sprite by a condom :-k .. A rayman style .

touko, to get back to the character design in your demo: Billyboy is nicely animated and feels like a lost cousin from an unreleased Taito game (which is a good thing, in my book). (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcds.html)
Personally, I was upset that I didn't get to see Billyboy jumping rope (say, on a "Round Clear" screen). Perhaps you can work that into the demo. (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcds.html)
