Title: Shadow of the Beast
Post by: soop on June 25, 2012, 10:39:54 PM
So I played it a bit the other day.  I seem to remember it getting rave reviews on the Amiga, and me being disappointed in it, and it's the same now.
The load times are a pain, but aside from not knowing what's going on, it doesn't seem to give you any clues on what to do.
There's a well, and there's a house, and I learned you need to go to the house first, because you need a key.  Then I learned that in the house, there's a monster than can kill you instantly.  Wicked.

Then I learned that I could get a fireball thing from a demon playing catch, and I just don't care anymore.  This game isn't great in my opinion, am I wrong?

I used to play this alot but to be honest i loved the music more than the game. its not a bad game just a bit clunky to play its very computer ish if you know what i mean a bit basic still love that music tho.

+1

I remember when it was released the graphics were really impressive, but when I actually played it on a friends Amiga I thought it was rubbish.

The Amiga was great!  And the Amiga and the PCE are cousins.

Cousins?  Well I suppose the PCE would be the beautiful perfect girl.  While the Amiga is the hick-redneck cousin who doesn't know the meaning of the word shower and the rest of the family always forgets to send the X-Mas card.

Nah, the Amiga is the tall brainy girl who goes off to get a college degree.

I think that you should finish a game like this before passing judgement. Although I don't think you'll find it to be amazing in the end, it definitely leaves you with a different impression when you look back on it as a whole.

Yes.

See, this is how SotB works.

1) You begin with epic parallax cloud atmosphere and music that makes you go HOLY SHIT
2) You walk left.  Only dumbasses walk right
3) You go on an adventure including battling giant demon bulldozers and dragons.  You get a jetpack and a pulse rifle.

The PCE version is the best playing one, with the best music.

The best art is still the Amiga one.

The Beast is an auwsome game, why not? I was listening to the music for a long time, before I even knew about the game. It would be so cool if their was a beast game, like MadMax4: Beyond thunder thighs. However they already made a "beast" game, it is called bioshock. That is as best as I could think of, in terms of "The beast".

beast was the ultimate parallax tech-demo on the amiga back then. the music was very nice as well, tho the pce red book kicks it of the throne in every aspects.

the pce really plays better, but is a huge downgrade graphic wise (especially the undergound and castle level BGs).

I really need to beat this game. I've loved SotB since I was a kid, but it was way too difficult for me when I rented it back in the day (especially the sped up Genesis version). I later got the JP Mega Drive version which plays at the proper speed but still found it too difficult with the crappy hit detection. The PCE version plays and sounds much better, and even has more graphical details than the MD version, but while I've progressed a lot further than on the Sega versions I never did actually beat it. I don't like using walk-throughs for games like this but do you guys have any hints for certain parts of the game that would save me some grief? The lack of continues makes me give up every time I get a bit further.

There are no hints really.   The game is straightforward.

where do you get to when you die.

Yeah I know, basically just progress through... I've been raped by a few bosses though. Can't really remember how far I've gotten as some of the levels blend together in my mind. I just need to set aside an evening and play through it really! I'm just wondering if there's something tricky that happens later in the game that I need to know about to beat/avoid so I don't just give up again.

One thing people do that f*cks them up is they try running through the game like Rambo.

it also amazes me how many time all the BGs and stuff got COMPLETELY redrawn for this only one game. Even for teh same system (but two regions).

Beating this game on pce/turbo is a breeze once you figure out the order to do things. It's the amiga one that is on the hard side.  Probably due to using a joystick and 1 button   It uses "Arkhan's favorite" up to jump.

You actually can screw yourself at one point in the game. When entering the castle with the 3 headed dragon, you can miss the gun and go straight down to the boss, I know I've done it a couple times accidentally. I haven't found a way to beat that bastard without it, and the ladder falls when you climb down it, so you can't go back for the gun. Unless I'm doing something wrong...

Nice to know, I'm pretty sure I've gotten the gun before but I'll be careful not to miss it. Gotta get a DUO or CD-sytem set up as all I have hooked up now is a CoreGrafx and a huge amount of HuCards.

Nope

if you miss it, you're f*cked.

Hit reset.

The rule for SOTB goes, if you see a boss up ahead and you have no special item. run back.
