Title: Saturn game suggestions
Post by: Nando on June 28, 2012, 08:13:57 AM
Looking for the more "obscure" not necessarily rare expensive games. Just good games that didn't get appreciated as much.

I was looking at this list earlier on.

JP and US games apply.

Dragon Force is on my ever growing list of games to eventually get for sure.

Some of these aren't obscure at all but they are all pretty cheap and good! Most can be had for $10-$20 if you look around.

Waku Waku 7
Silhouette Mirage
Keio's Flying Squadron 2
Magical Drop 3
Strikers 1945
Pocket Fighter
Street Fighter Collection

On the slightly pricier side
Elevator Action Returns
Batsugun
D&D Collection

Just looking at my still very small Saturn collection, how about some Gungriffon (http://www.outofprintarchive.com/articles/features/SegaSaturn/GunGriffon-OSSM6-1.html)? Or better yet, get the sequel, which I don't have but heard is even better. :D

No shortage of love for the Saturn amongst the PCE crowd.

Here are some suggestions - agree with some, don't with others, but a decent read anyway.
http://www.racketboy.com/retro/best-undiscovered-sega-saturn-games

From that list, I really enjoyed titles like:
- Assault Suit Leynos 2
- Last Bronx
- D&D collection
- Cyberbots
- Virtual On
- Thunder Force V
- Tenchi wo Kurau II (Warriors of Fate)

There are plenty of cheap, good games for the saturn (if not domestic, imported versions), which most people know about:
- Die Hard Arcade (Dynamite Deka)
- Fighters Megamix
- Fighting Vipers
- Virtua Fighter 2
- Virtual On
- Sega Rally

Heh... just saw that racketboy has a buget list as well...

- Fighters Megamix
- Fighting Vipers

Those 2 are some pretty awesome fighting games but I would suggest getting the japanese versions.  The USA version of megamix is slightly censored and for Fighting Vipers only the japanese version has (a japanese created character called) pepsi man as an unlockable character.

Don't forget to check out that princess crown tho.. even if it is all in japanese..

Some great suggestions so far, for cheap US games people already beat me to the punch with some of these.  Sorry for some duplication, but I would say these cheapies are great:

Three Dirty Dwarves
Die Hard Arcade
Robo Pit (always LOVED this shitty game)
Galactic Attack
Astal (maybe not underappreciated)
Decathlete
D / Enemy Zero series
Blast Chamber (specifically multiplayer)
Blazing Dragons (yeah...  so what if I like it a lot)
Sega Rally (netlink version is slightly smoother and also cheap)
Clockwork Knight
X-Men Children of the Atom
Darius Gaiden
..and finally Criticom is so awful that it is good.  My friend and I have played scores of times.

Vanilla Ware FTW! One of my top ten must buys for sure.

Tons of great suggestions, no shortage to choose from for sure.

What are the worthwhile mods to the system, other than region modding it?

Modchip to play cdrs and led lights in a skeleton Saturn. I also swapped out the buttons from a couple black Saturn pads into a couple smoke/skeleton Saturn pads that I had converted for Neo Geo. The end result is the nicest looking Saturn pad you can obtain.

I've got a Skeleton Saturn and pads, do you know anyone who does LED mods? Kinda silly just to do a visual mod but I bet it looks awesome.

Since I now safely have a copy again (never should have sold it) I can recommend the incredibly shallow but wonderfully original Astra Superstars without worrying about the price going up even more:

I'm totally down for originality, thanks Zeta!

Have any of you played "Scud: The Disposable Assassin?"

I have. It's very rough, but very original. I'd recommend Mr. Bones over SCUD in the "weird American Saturn game" catagory.

The Mr.Bones game looks really interesting, like a bunch of action and mini games. Thanks for the info!

Yeah, it's pretty shallow, but it's a great game to pull out to play against someone who happens to be over. Since there are no special moves to use anyone can pick it up and play it!

Nowadays they would call it a "social" fighting game.

That's probably true. It will add players in your living room. If the game were Street Fighter Zero 2...I'd just kick people's asses until they all got sick of it and left.
