Title: Tell me about the Vita
Post by: soop on July 02, 2012, 03:55:29 AM
I'm having surprising difficulty finding out what you can do with it - I can't log onto PSN yet, but I was under the impression there would be TG16 games, maybe some other emulation too, but I can't find a list.

what else can I do with mine?

There are a few TG16 and Neo Geo games on there, but nothing to get excited about. If you are wanting classics, the best bang for the buck are the SNK and Capcom collections, as they are cheap and have a ton of games on them.

Aside from that, catch up on PSP games you missed, and PS1 classics should become available eventually. And of course, actual Vita games, there aren't a lot of them (and there won't be for a while) but there are some excellent games in there like Rayman and Uncharted.

I think Sony said PS1 games are coming really soon.  There's alot of great PSP games, it's amazing how many (atleast IMO) there are that are really good that I never knew about.  And there's still more PSP games coming.  Gungir just came out, & I believe Unchained Blades & Growlanser 4 will be out by the end of the month.  Also, atleast for me, I'll be getting a Vita for Ys 4, & well, anything else Falcom releases!  But I'm holding out on a new model, unless Ys 4 comes out here before hand, then I might have to give in.

There's also a few awesome dl only vita games like The Escape Plan and Super Stardust.  People would hop on the hate bandwagon and rag about the content of Ridge Racer Vita, but now there's 90 music tracks, extra cars, and tracks that make it well worth it for me.  It's sad that Dragon's Crown is now so far off it's not being released till 2013.  I also will be getting Ys Celceta when it comes out.  Is this actually the "new" Ys 4 or is that going to be totally different?  Lumines is also a must buy game for vita.  I still play my vita almost daily.  Ys Chronicles finally became playable for Vita so I've been rocking that the past couple weeks.  Looks gorgeous on the OLED.

I enjoyed the new Resistance, despite the poor reviews.  Uncharted was pretty good if that is your thing.  Also, I am. Baseball nut, and MLB 12 is the best portable baseball game since Baseball Stars.

You are probably better off waiting if you dont have one yet, because you missed the launch thrill and are probably nearing a price cut or good bundle.  Once one of those things occurs, it is worth a purchase.

Maybe Playstation All-Stars will live up to the hype?

Ys Celeceta will be the deffinitive Ys 4.  Forget about Dawn of Ys, or either of the Mask of the Sun games(currently, the SNES Mask of the Sun is the official Ys 4).  Since there's never been an Ys 4 by Falcom themselves(Dawn of Ys by Hudson, Mask of the Sun by Tonkin' House, & Mask of the Sun: A New Theory by Taito), it's hard to know how close any elements of the story or characters will be to any of the old incarnations of Ys 4.  For instance, Arem is only in Dawn of Ys, however, I believe Falcom planned to have Arem in the Ys 4 anime they were shopping around for, based on the style of art used, as Gadis, Garuda, & Bami look like they're straight out of the PCE game.  Since I don't have a Vita yet, I'll probably wait until the US version comes to buy it.  Otherwise, I'd probably just go ahead & buy the Jp version & try to play thru it.

Also, yeah, Uncharted is supposed to be good, I love the Uncharted games, so, I'll be getting that.  I still haven't gotten into the Resistence games, but, seeing as how the Vita game might be the last one for awhile, maybe I'll pick up the series & start playing thru them at my leisure.

Finally got my PSN sorted, and  downloaded a bunch of Demos.  I was really impressed with Unit 13, so I think I'll be getting that at some point.
The AR games are novel, but Frobisher Says is really my kind of thing too :)

I haven't even played Uncharted yet, so I might crack that open on the way home.

Interesting.  If you could pick one, what would it be and why?

I'm not super into JRPGs, though I love Zelda and Golden Sun.

Crimson Gem Saga & Hexyz Force seem to be the most solid JRPG's in that bunch.  I haven't beaten either yet, they're on my long back log.  But they seem like the safest bets, however, unlike Zelda both are turn based.

Riviera, Yggdra Union, & Knights in the Knightmare are SRPG's, but even that doesn't exactly explain them.  They don't seem like you're typical Final Fantasy Tactics games, especially Yggdra Union IIRC is more like a card battle game.

People rave about the Shin Megami Tensai games, but I'ver never cared for them myself.  I don't really know anything about Class of Heroes or Kenka Bancho: Badass Rumble.

There are some reviews of most of these games here:

The Persona's are choice, as is Class of Heroes (1st person dungeoner). Crimson Gem Saga is LIGHT Years better than it's predecessor, and Hexyz Force is pretty fun.

I've been playing Uncharted and it's really good!

Insane plot though, the main character is already a mass murderer, and yet he seems to shrug off his killings with casual indiference.  He's clearly a psychopath.

I am hoping a Christmas with a handful of solid games and a price cut makes the Vita relevant.

I agree.  There's supposed to be an upcoming gamer's day or something where a bunch of more Vita games are announce, plus, the TGS is supposed to focus more on Vita as well.  And I know we'll be having Ys Celceta coming out here by the end of the year, or early next year, even though Xseed hasn't announced it yet.

I think Call of Duty in the US and Europe will shift tonnes of units, and if Sony don't have Capcom on board for the next Monster Hunter (dual analogues!) they pretty much deserve to fail.

Those two games will sell the console, and I'd be surprised if we don't see another of each.

Then there's Metal Gear, which will probably show up at some sort in a new guise (the HD collection isn't enough), Kojima or not.  I mean Sony will probably get quite a few of their major IPs out;

Gran Turismo (3 years late as usual) - this could be really good.  Might be a tad big though.
God of War
Final Fantasy
Metal Gear

There's probably a few more I'm not familiar with, but these are games that sell consoles, and seeing as Uncharted is probably the only AAA title so far, the more of these we see, the faster the ball will start to roll.

Just walked into my local not Toys R' Us played it awhile,

Gravity Rush -they use that outline effect, that is used in DBZ PS2, with the background being regular, 3d. It was a demo, so I do not know their is a story, all I know is your main character is a half naked, woman, in torn clothing who forgot where, or what she was doing last night. I am kinda shocked because the story with the talking cat felt like a rip-off
from Shadowrun talking dog, which rip-off from Cyborg2. A woman in the middle of a wholesome town dressed half naked, but one thing fun I discovered about the game is ability to push people over and knock things down????

Little Deviants - Another Demo, in store. I honestly felt that was the best game. Basically the evil bomberman army is transporting the criminal monsters they caught, on a raid. So the monsters, escapes to a planet of primarly europeanish ( White ) humans. In return Bombermen robots,
somehow have the ability to raise the dead, raises the corpses of the planet.

So now you have to deal with the Bombermen, Monsters, and undead threw an assortment of mini games. The game I was playing was basically a shooter, where you move the camera around ( yes it has a camera built into it ), shooting the monsters, and robots in their WWII
esque, planes.

In general it is a bunch of mini games, where bomberman, bomberman monsters ( who can resemble pac-man ghosts ), and zombies ( because I guess raising the dead is a cool thing ), in an all out war.

Keep in mind, it is not bomberman, it just reminds of bomberman, and the robots looks like those robots I got for Christmas back in 1991. But they are blueish.
...........

Otherwise the Vita memory cards cost like 29.99 USD??? That little tiny thing cost almost 30USD. The screen protector cost 10USD.
............

Note I am not buying a Vita, Mario, or Santa St. Josphenia

I hope no one will mind me reviving this thread. It's only been dormant for a few months.

I just got a Vita recently. I'm enjoying Ys and Uncharted. The demo of Resistance seemed pretty good too, despite lukewarm reviews I've read.

My main gripe, as I've pointed out in the Ys Vita thread, is with the system's resolution. It seems games look a lot better when running in the system's native resolution - otherwise aliasing issues quickly become noticeable (as in all of the games mentioned above, though Uncharted and Resistance still look pretty good overall). The system's native resolution is only 960x544 (which actually looks quite good on that small screen). Seems to me that it shouldn't take too much power to run a game at this resolution, so I'm hoping most games in the future will do so. I've played demos of games running at this resolution (Power Smash 4 and Dynasty Warriors Next) and they look great.

EDIT: Uncharted is upscaling from 720x408 to 960x544. Bloody shame.

Makes me wonder, if when they do a revision of the Vita, if they'll do any upgrading to it.  I remember the rejoicing when they added memory to the PSP 2000, shortening the amount of loading, not to mention a TV out, that's the main thing I'd like to see.

I'm hoping for a TV output, but they're definitely not going to increase the resolution, if that's what you had in mind.

I can see them adding internal backup memory though.

EDIT: Of course this is assuming the system even lasts long enough to warrant a second model.

I've just seen that Call of Duty BOD has 10 solo missions.

Seriously, a campaign mode consisting of 10 missions.  What a crock of shit, I'm keeping my damn money.  The console versions had a fairly short campaign, but that's just f*cking crazy.

I hope Sony keeps doing cross-play with all of their games.  It is a ridiculously good deal to get two games for the price of one.

I think a PS3 and Vita bundle is in the works too.  If priced right, that could help the Vita big time.

I read that the Vita is slightly more powerful than the iPhone 5 for gaming.  That means it has a year to sell, because once iPhone 6 comes out and has more power than Vita, it will be tough to market.  I think Vita will be fine if it has a good holiday 2012.

You'd be surprised how many people get the iPhone and load it with games and never actually take calls on it...

3 of my friends do this.  One of them forgot the phone number for the thing, that's how often he uses it for calls.

Plus, theres enough games for it that it might as well be considered a portable game device.

It is a portable gaming device, as well as a communication device. The issue is that the media tries to spin it as the current video game system killer. It is not, it is simply just another way to experience certain kinds of games.

I'm still undecided on the vita or the new 3DS XL.  The only reason I would get the 3DS over the Vita is for the Nintendo franchises. The Vita in specs and graphics quality beat the crap of out the 3DS and bonus for having a PS3 already, psx/psp games PSN games. Not a bad deal...hmmm

There's also talk of a price drop after xmas for the vita.  It's just right now there isn't much for games.  After the Tokyo Game Show though quite a bit is coming out down the road.  There's still not an amazing 3rd party support for it though.  Also if you don't own a psp it's nice to get a vita and be able to do both.  The past couple days have been fairly exciting with the kernal exploit for the psp emulator.  Sadly you have to have dled the game for it before it got pulled from psn.  There is also a UV Loader in the works which will allow user mode access for the vita.  That's what I'm waiting for.
