Title: Do I buy Dracula X?
Post by: soop on July 03, 2012, 05:22:22 AM
Ok, so there's a pretty good Dracula X on BIN for $92 shipped, including spine (sorry haters!) which is fairly cheap.  Or at least one of the cheapest I've seen in a while.

What do you reckon?  Should I just breathe in, relax and hold my guns?  It's not like I'm short of other games to play.  and that's an eyewatering amount of money for one (undeniably great) game.  Maybe I should emulate it first.

Definitely try first any game that costs as much as new games do. Dracula X is definitely worth buying as much any other PCE game for the same price, if you can appreciate it. Not everyone loves it or that kind of game though.

That's as cheap as it usually is on eBay. You can find it for less if you're patient, but why bother since it's not a huge difference and this one at least comes with the spine card. Even if you don't care about the spine, you could easily sell it for $10 alone and bring the price of the actual game down further.

I paid $120 for it in 1998.  Then paid $55 for it last year.

The prices seem all over the place for it, can you get it cheaper?  yes.  Would you possibly pay more for it later?  yes.

Just get it.  It's not worth that much, no video game really is.  But it's one of the best ever.

It all depends if you are a fan of Castlevania. But I would imagine if you were, you've already got the PSP Dracula X Chronicles which includes the game. So you just have to ask if you really want it to play on your console. Really I think CV Dracula X has been overpriced for ages. Yes, it's a good game. It has an amazing soundtrack. But $100+ range really? Even now after anyone can pick it up for the PSP for like $30?

So it's all up to if you think it is worth it. I'm a pretty big fan of Castlevania. I really enjoyed CV DX on the PCE. I'd buy it if I felt that I had the money to spend, but probably only after many other things I'd want to purchase. Afterall, being real you can play the game other ways now. You'd be paying quite alot of money to have the real deal. With that same money, couldn't you get a number of other things, games, that you also want to get?

So really no one can help you make the decision. Unless you're just asking if they think as the market goes if that is a good price for the game or not.

I'd certainly buy it for $55!

Well I think it's the best game for the CD system and also the best Castlevania game. Everything about it is awesome! Definitely in my top five games of all time.

$92 with spine seems to be an average price for eBay but sure you could find a copy without a spine card for $80 or less if you are patient.

It's only money - pull the trigger.  If you decide it's not for you, you should be able to resell it easily and recoup most of your money (think of the few bucks you lose as a rental fee).

It depends on what else you buy. If you are the sort of tool that thinks that $150 is a good price of a loose US Soldier Blade (these people exist) then by all means buy Dracula X before you waste any more money "completing your US collection".

IMO there are only two or three other games on PCE that are as good as Dracula X, and therefore its worth the money. $92 seems average to me. Keep in mind that this title has never been cheap. It cost about $75-100 to get a copy in the US back when it was new, and its hovered right around there ever since.

soop, buy the sweet game already.

Yes, I came back, after two (?) months of being M.I.A. to offer you this sage advice.

Take it.

Even if you don't fall in love with it and spend countless hours replaying it...

...you can always resell it at top dollar. Dracula X is one of those games (highly desired + critically praised) that you KNOW you can sell/trade it.

But that would be blasphemous.

I think it' ok to pull the trigger on that Soops,
including shipping, it's not really that much plus you're getting THE game that pretty much everyone recommends when someone picksup a PCE.
Heck, it even makes an awesome soundtrack to pop into a cd player  :-"

one of my favorite games on pce/tg, and one of the few that i've gone back to after beating.

Top 10 PCE game for sure, which should justify the price.

When I see a game I want that is $5 more than you might get it if you wait, you have to begin to value your time and searching effort.

Lol people spend money like that every day for absolute
garbage games like on the ps3 xbox etc.
Drac x is a master piece were you cant really f*ck up whem
buying it, doesnt matter what type of game you really like.

Why do peeps buy garbage on new consoles for full price
without any questioning, but when it comes to a retro masterpiece
they turn their cents or pennies several times before the go. Lol

Yeah, I'm really not that guy.  I'm gonna try it first and hang back.  It's a good price, but not *amazing*, and I already got Rainbow Islands (and a tonne of other games to play.

One day guys...  one day.

Plus I'd rather spend time and energy on not being single right now.

*edit* and hey, just like women, half the fun is the chase, right?

Sadly, sometimes the Chase is Better Than The Catch even.

Dracula X is amazing. One of the best Turbo/PCE games ever and easily one of the best Castlevania games ever to boot.

$92 isn't a bad price w spine. I bought my copy w/o spine (I don't care for them personally) for $80 shipped. This game is definitely worth it. I played it for a week straight without picking up any other game in that time frame. Its one of the PCE gems for a reason.

Go ahead and pull the trigger. You won't be disappointed

That's a really good point. Compared to the garbage that they sell for $60 these days, Dracula X is a bargin. Though again, the game is available for much cheaper on the PSP if you already have one of those. Ofcourse, it is nicer to play it on a DUO.

Old comics used to say "This could be worth $2500 to you!" or somesuch on the cover. Dracula X is the same. It's awesome. I'd go as high as $200 for it, if we lived in a world where owning the original was the only way to play it.

Since we don't live in that world, eh, I don't know, it's up to you. Like has been said, it will hold its value anyway, especially at the price you're paying. It's money in the bank.

Take the plunge and buy it.  I think its worth the price.  I'm pretty cheap when it comes to purchasing games and I almost never spend more than $30 on a single game.  Dracula X is one of those rare exceptions for me.  It's a must have game.

Castlevania is like playing the NES game but with Sega Saturn graphics. The Castlevania on the PSX/Saturn basically uses the exact same sprites and builds on this Castlevania, but makes sense. Once again unlike the PSX/Saturn game, where you fight Alien Dracula, you fight beast Dracula, which was and is pretty amazing of it's time.

Alien Dracula kinda jump the shark, with Dracs body sticking out of Alien. If you can understand the dialouge, it just makes Dracula looks like Ganondorf, from Zelda: Wind Waker. Then whats her face, is into Alcuad and not Ritchet  what kind of girl is that, going after 1000 year old Alcluad ( who was revamped like twice already ).
When she spent the entire game chasing Ritchet.

One day, they are going to make her, have his kid, or something, or even make a Cameo, of some sort.

If you have Super Cd-Rom capability there really is no excuse to not own Dracula X. Its possibly the greatest achievement for the system in that games genre, and the game has a ton of replay value. The price as always been reasonable too considering the quality of the game. Its easily a $120-150 worthy title.

I say it is totally worth it. And there's nothing like playing games on the original hardware.

But to be honest, I pretty much gave up on Castlevania after playing Simon's Quest. I gave SOTN and Curse of Darkness a try but it just wasn't the same magic as the original NES title (a really hard one but gratifying when I finished it 20+ years ago). I wish I played this Chi no Rondo back in the day, but I was pretty busy playing Sonic, Shinobi, Streets of Rage, TMNT, etc on my Genesis.

I just pulled the trigger on this one instead of wasting my $ on say, Madden 13.

It's on my to-buy list, just waiting for the right deal ("saving it for last" as I call it). In the meantime, I just dug out my PS1 to play through SOTN again after about 10 years.

You don't like Castlevania III? That one, and Rondo, are amazing and both in the same style as the original. The Genesis Castlevania game is very good, and in this style, as well. Castlevania IV on the SNES also, but the multidirectional whip thing might turn some people off (or on? haha).

Castlevania IV was absolutely awesome. Of the earlier Castlevania games, only CV2 was a weak link. And I think part of the problem was likely development constraints and they probably ran out of time before they really had what they wanted. It's still decent but compared to 1, 3, 4, Dracula X, Bloodlines, SotN, and even the Gameboy games it is probably the least favorite.

Don't take me wrong, those are good games, I just happened to pass on them back in the day.

Castlevania IV was absolutely awesome. Of the earlier Castlevania games, only CV2 was a weak link. And I think part of the problem was likely development constraints and they probably ran out of time before they really had what they wanted. It's still decent but compared to 1, 3, 4, Dracula X, Bloodlines, SotN, and even the Gameboy games it is probably the least favorite.

have you played the castlevania adventure?
GOD DAMN.
i wish i could scrub that game from my brain, it's awful.

Really?  Even though it wasn't as good as the NES games I was used to, I played the heck out of it and its sequel and loved 'em.

well, maybe my expectations were warped, as i never played it until about a year ago.
but i just felt the game was way too slow, compared to the console games.

Yeah, adv. on the GB was a dry fart.

I mainly played the Belmont's Revenge I think on GB, and only a few levels here and there. The point was CV2 on NES felt unfinished and could have been better than it was.

Also, considering for how much the watered down SNES port goes for these days, Dracula X for the PCE is an excellent deal for your $.

Re: Do I buy Dracula X?

f*ck YES.

I paid 46 pounds sterling to a guy that was super pissed back about 2 years ago and he shipped it from liverpool. It was eBay and it wasn't sunteam_paul so I didn't feel bad.

It's full of awesome. Every goddamn moment is pure bliss. It will completely slay you on side-scrollers for nigh close to eternity.

Buy it.

Even though I've never had a chance to play it (I soon will, when I get my DUO form Keith Courage tomorrow!!!), I've read soooo many great reviews of it, and I already love the Castlevania series, so I'm really looking forward to the day (soon) when I can get this game and PLAY IT!

Unfortunately, this has finally become an issue. Even if you get a refund in the end, who wants to waste their time?

I've already sanctioned on his TurboKarma, Cool Points, and Turbob privileges. I'm surprised he's lasted so long... he must be winning raffles in Iraq.

I'd like to know this as well. I sent out some lightscribed US Rondos (maybe 5, all were copies I made while trying to figure out lightscribe) several months ago. I really hope nobody is selling their copy.

You'd have to be pretty f*cking stupid to mistake a Lightscribe disc for a real Dracula X.

I'm having trouble finding it now, but a few months back there was a thread here about a guy selling a 'promo' or some crap copy of Dracula X, on auction. Once that one sold, he magically had three more.

Those are the only Drac X booties I'm aware of.

You blacked out your own name and left the sellers name for all to see on a public forum? Not good practice, man.

You blacked out your own name and left the sellers name for all to see on a public forum? What the hell, man? If that was me I'd come to your house and punch you in the face, in invite you to Tokyo/Yokohama and kick you in the nuts. Delete that shit.

Its a good thing violent people like you don't know about phone books. I mean, everyone's name and address in there...people just waiting to get punched!

Seriously, I find this kind of paranoia odd. Like when people post pictures of their car and they black out the number plate. WHY? That numberplate is attached to their car and in fill view everywhere they go for years, but for some reason if its on the internet they feel they have to censor it.

Damn, I come to edit my post to make it less harsh, and you copied it. :D

In other words, yeah, I think I did came down too hard. Still, I doubt a lot of people like having that sort of thing shown. The seller probably isn't on these forums, but does that make a difference? It's basic forum etiquette (isn't it?) not to do that sort of thing. And no, I would not really do anything violent about it. That was just to get the point across (which I thought was poorly stated, and I edited it out).

I do hope Esada enjoys his copy of DracX. I'm sure he just posted that without really thinking about it. Esa, do the right thing and edit that guy's info out.

-for the record, I'm not in the phone book. I'm unlisted. Not everyone wants their info so easily available and that should be respected. It might very well be a big deal to some people.
