Title: Any Cool Retro Gaming Shops in Your Area???
Post by: turbokon on July 06, 2012, 03:06:00 AM
We are currently vacationing in Houston, TX and I found this cool gaming shop called Gameover Video Games Store. I felt like a kid in a candy store. We don't have anything like these in Wichita, KS besides the pawn shops and flea market and even those don't have as much of a selection. They have everything from the Atari to Xbox. They even have a few selection of turbografx games:) I bought Transbots for the Sega Master System and Streets of Rage for Game Gear. I'm thinking about picking up a model 1 sega cd or Atari Lynx from there. I want to stop by there one more time before we leave. Would live to see some pics of any retro gaming shops in your area. Have you seen this thread (if the store has Turbobs, they're bound to have all sorts of retro gaming goodies). That's not a bad selection of TG-16 stuff - how were the prices?

Necro, prices are kinda high, I paid $35 for Transbot and Streets of rage. Atari lynx is $80.

I've got a couple of cool retro gaming shops (masquerading as used book shops) in my town, but sadly I've never seen any Turbobs. However, I did pick up Darius Gaiden for the Saturn today from one of them for $6. I'll take pics of them next time I'm there and I think about it. Lots of good Genesis, SNES, GBA, PS1/2, Xbox/360, Atari 2600 stuff. Some oddball stuff from time to time (the place I got Saturn Darius today also had 8-10 Sega CD games, but I don't have one, so I didn't really look at what they had. The other shop had Earthbound, Final Fantasy III and Super Mario RPG (all for the SNES) for $8 ea and I just picked up Geist for the GC for $3 yesterday. I'm going broke getting good deals. Good thing I like ramen. :)

I went back there today and they were having a TMNT night. I picked up a couple more items, RetroDuo Portable and black belt for the Sega master system. Also took a little video clip:)
They also have an online store, www.gameovervideogames.com (http://www.gameovervideogames.com/)

There's a 2 store chain around here called Doc's Video Games (http://www.docsvideogames.com/) that I enjoy. I really like the people that work there, but I'll confess their prices are generally a bit high. The good news is that they'll work deals with you and have a selection of pretty hard to find stuff, like PC Engine, TG16, Neo Geo and of course SNES, Genesis, NES, etc. Here's a pic of a Vectrex they had:

I've heard of the Game Over chain from The Game Chasers show on YT. The guys hit up the stores in Austin and San Antonio in the episode linked below. They said a lot of good things about the Austin store. We don't have a chain like this in Boston, but there are some good independent video game shops in the area.

Closest I can think of is Game Dude which is pretty decent but can't hold a candle to all the great shops in Japan, especially in Akihabara.

Closest retro store I know of is one in Stockholm called Super Motaro (http://supermotaro.se/blog/). It used to just be your normal web shop, although they also had auctions out on Tradera, the swedish (and not as good) equivalent of eBay. Sometimes they'd show up on cons and the like as well, selling stuff.
Now they have a real little store with some sit down arcade cabinets thrown in the back for good measure. Prices are pretty decent - or rather, some things can be had for really cheap (memory cards, controllers etc) while other go for more, usually systems. There's a little bit of everything, even som PCE/TG16. It's just a bit troublesome getting there...

In Virginia Beach there was a store called Cool Stuff that had a really good selection from 8- and 16-bit eras and a small selection of TG16 stuff. I think they recently closed though. We also had Flipper McCoy's on the boardwalk at the beach that was one of the best retro arcades on the east coast (at least it was 5 years ago before I moved to Wisconsin).
Haven't run into much out here in Wisconsin. If anybody knows of anything here I'd be curious.

There are a few in the Dallas area, but most are just overpriced. There is a palce called FX Game Exchange, A few Game Xchanges, a few Console Game Xchanges, a place called game chop (currently liquidating retro stuff for all modern, which leads to cheap finds, like my .99 Jag and .01 Atari 7800), and of course Movie Trading Company, which is horribly overpriced. There used to be a place called 3D Games, but they always wanted outrageous prices for TG16 stuff ($150 for Soldier blade loose, etc.), but I did find good NES deals there (Zombie Nation CIB for $15). All in all, still usually best to stumble around flea markets hoping to cross someone that has TG16 stuff, which of course never happens :\

We used to have several Games Exchange stores in Wichita. Now there are only two left opened and their selection of 8 and 16-bits are very limited.

Yeah our Game Xchange stores seem to be thinning out on their retro stuff as well. I keep going into them hoping for a game chasers dinosaur peak-esque find, and always come out disappointed. The best I found there were 2 copies of Dragon Warrior IV for 10 a pop.

Nothing in Vegas . Yeah nothing in Georgia either, seems almost like TG16 never existed here.

I live in north west NJ and over in Easton, PA there's a new retro store called The Game Gallery. They just had a Neo Geo CD but it sold within 12 hours. This places stock constantly rotates and it's a small store. Here's a link:

Where in NJ, exactly?
I'm southeast of you (East Hanover, Morris County) and we have Digital Press store (on Route 46)...but it really isn't anything to get excited about (it pains me to say that). At least they have a wonderful display with consoles + information placards (akin to a museum exhibit).

I guess I should stop in there again. It's been ~5 years since I've been there? Holy crappagio.

I've been to digital press before I'm like an hour and a half west of there. It was pretty decent. I wasn't wowed very much.
I live in hunterdon county all the way west by Frenchtown NJ.

You guys in the US are so lucky, the best that I've got is Gametraders, who are more of a rip off than ebay.

For me, once I got ebay, gamestores stopped wowing me, and I mean, its not for lack of having a lot in my general location. What really wows me is just going to places like Goodwill and finding rare gems cheap. In the least I am always pleasantly. When I got to gamestores its all cut and dry, I know what to expect. In general most game stores will run you more then ebay if the seller thinks they have half a clue about pricing and value on their more "exotic" items.
