Title: I got myself a Marble Madness prototype!
Post by: BeaglePuss on July 10, 2012, 12:31:49 PM
Hi everyone!
I've been a member of the forum for years, but haven't had a good enough reason to post until now lol.
I purchased a massive lot of prototype materials from Tengen/Atari, one of which is a Turbografx-16 copy of the unreleased title "Marble Madness." I bought the lot untested, and in many instances unlabeled (as was the case with the MM prototype). I knew the game was a TG-16/PC Engine prototype from Tengen though, so I was willing to take a shot. I figured I'd end up with a prototype copy of KLAX at the very least. The lot got in today, and immediately fired up the card to find it to be Marble Madness.
I've heard stories of other copies existing, but through all my searching I haven't been able to find concrete evidence to prove it. Was there a copy for sale on Yahoo Japan? Does anyone know any collectors that own a copy? The title screen on mine is slightly different than that of the scans that are floating around, so I'm sure there were other proto cards out there at one point. The game is fully playable to the end, but I don't know how complete it is exactly.
I will be updating with pics and screen shots shortly. If you have an idea of who I am, you can trust that this is not some lame hoax. For the time being though, I'm just trying to find as much info as possible on the game.

Very cool. As long as this doesnt turn into a Bonk: BOE thread, this is awesome news.
I havent seen anyone else post regarding this prototype before, so if there are others out there, it is quite rare. The Military Madness prototype from maybe a year ago was the only one I have seen to date.
This game still gets a lot of NES play in my house, great two player mode. I am excited for the pictures!
Just outta curiosity, are you keeping or selling? If selling, just remember I asked first!

I much rather have a dump of the Rom for it as there are only so few copies of this game known to exist.

Awesome find! Congratulations.
Has a rom for this prototype been released yet? (not that I'm asking for it, mind you) Is there a way one can be made with this prototype?

That is pretty badass dude. I love Marble Madness on the NES, but I especially love it with a trackball in the arcades.
Who doesn't like the arcade version?

I don't think any game by Tengen ever made it to the TG16, aside from Klax. This game would be one of the first. I'd love to see some pics of the card itself, and some screen shots.

Heh, I was just talking to Joe Red about finding a prototype to MM the other day, now lo and behold here it is! If you don't mind letting a few of us borrow it (we are trustworthy) we would love to share it with the community. Of course, you can say, "No!" :)

Someone pleeeeeeeeeeease please do a (ntsc-j) fan press of this game with similar level artwork and print quality to anime4ever   If they do I would drop £30 for a copy without any hesitation.

Assuming you're not full of beans, this is pretty cool news. I look forward to seeing screenshots, pics of the proto, and anything else ya have to share.
+1. Even if it's not shared (though I hope it is), it should be dumped before the board dies.

You should dump it, then sell it to Thigh Butt for millions. :)

Now, back to my original post.... Can anyone fill me in on other owners of the game? Someone mentioned early on in the thread that there are "very few" of these out there. Well, how few? Was there a Yahoo Japan auction? What other history can you tell me about the game.
I have more pics and screen shots that I will be slowly leaking over course of the day/week. I'm really interested in the history of the game at the moment though, not it's potential distribution. No offense meant of course, just don't want to put the carriage in front of the horse is all.

If this is for real, this is the only known prototype of this game. There were screenshots of the game in issues of PC Engine Fan Magazine and some western magazines took info from that source.
Has Thibaut contacted you yet? he has been actively searching for this game for years.

Oh, it's very real. Again, if you had an idea of who I am as far as prototype collecting is concerned, you'd already know that...
I've read that there are two other Marble Madness prototypes in collector's hands, one of which sold at auction on Yahoo Japan. How are you so sure that this is the only known copy currently when I've read otherwise (during my brief search).
But because you were nice enough to actually answer my question, here's a screen shot of the game in action: (http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n223/mrmark0673/Marble Madness TG-16/DSC00718WM.jpg)

Amazing! I'm not much of an expert on this particular PC Engine/NEC subject, but I'm not aware of any previous confirmed owners of this game. Thibaut is the one to talk to, I'm sure if there's any info on the history of this game he'll know everything there is in great detail.

I'm sure our friend Thibaut will find me soon enough, I won't be searching him out just yet.
As for the Hu-card release, I rather like the idea. I've released prototypes for the NES (Kitty's Catch and Hoppin' Mad) as well as for the Genesis (Beastball and Dragon's Lair) on their respected software with a decent amount of success. Again, that's down the road a bit, though I would entertain the idea for certain.
I will say that the purchase cost me many thousands of dollars already though. This wasn't something that I just stumbled upon, but something I actively sought out.

Yes I agree it's a highly valuable item. The idea of fan press everyone wins, you recoup your money and possibly make a profit and we get a new HuCard release :D

I couldn't agree more, which is why I've gone with such a release so many times in the past. Again, I don't want to get carried away just yet. There's a lot that needs to happen before I could commit to anything like that.

Easy does it friendo, I don't want to get too much into talks of releases and rom distributions just yet. One step at a time.
At the moment I'm interested in sharing pictures, screen shots, and maybe some video. I'm also interested in gathering up what data there is to be had on the game currently.
We'll see where we end up when the dust settles. If you know who I am (or starting to figure it out), you'd know that I'm no hoarder. I am a dirty profiteer though, and I'm not interested in throwing money away. It was a massive initial investment that I plan on recouping at the very least.

Fair enough. :) I have to admit I do not know who you are, but outside of PCEFX I'm not plugged into the retro game scene. Anyway, the mere fact that you are willing to share pictures and aren't immediately stating you'll never entertain the idea of a ROM dump puts you miles ahead of lots of others in my mind. I'll chill though and enjoy what you leak out. :)

Ditto. A friendly request for information and trivia on a prototype purchase is a nice change of pace from the usual wave-it-over-our-head hoarders and liars we get around here. I wish I knew something about the game, but this is the first I've heard of its existence. Nice to see it's not one-player only like the SMS version!

Nice to see it's not one-player only like the SMS version!
I haven't had the chance to actually try playing with a second player though (I am adapter-less at the moment), so I'm not 100% sure that the second player has been implemented yet. I will have to pick up a multi-tap and give her a run-through.
The game comes equipped with a stage select feature (Simply pressing the select button does the trick). I plan on posting (at least) a single screen shot from each level of the game. The game itself does have an ending, but on the off-chance this is released, I would hate to spoil things (as anti-climatic as they may be).

We've discussed Marble Madness off and on over the years and nobody's been able to give solid info., so I doubt you'll get much now (though I'd love to see someone come forward). Heh, you probably already know more about it than all of us put together.

Well, I have plenty to report:
Firstly, I took a picture of the opening screen and each level. The game opens up in the exact same fashion as the "Off the Wall" prototype does. The player is greeted with "Tengen presents: Debug Level II."
After a bit messing around, I discovered an insanely awesome debug menu. I have pictures of each "Test" that will likely do more justice than my simple explanation would. Each test has to do with sound effect and things of that nature, but one choice allows you to mess with the color pallet. At the end of all the test, the game defaults to a debug mode that allows you to "fly" your Marble across each landscape. The color of the level depends on the pallet you chose. I'm sure this sounds insanely confusing, but the pictures will help put things together.
As an aside, the second Marble is pictured leading me to believe this is a legitimate two player game.
I'm putting some primitive watermarks on the pictures and plan on uploading them shortly.

(http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n223/mrmark0673/Marble Madness TG-16/DSC00717WM.jpg) Game inserted into my region modded Duo-r.
(http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n223/mrmark0673/Marble Madness TG-16/DSC00721WM.jpg) Debug message I mentioned earlier.
(http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n223/mrmark0673/Marble Madness TG-16/DSC00730WM.jpg) Debug menu 1
(http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n223/mrmark0673/Marble Madness TG-16/DSC00731WM.jpg) Debug menu 2. If you hit the run button, the songs from the game begin to play. The keys for the song light up on the keyboards, effectively showing you how to play all the tunes. How f*cking cool is that?
(http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n223/mrmark0673/Marble Madness TG-16/DSC00733WM.jpg) Debug menu 3. You can change the wave on the screen and it controls the pitch of a song. Kinda weird.
(http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n223/mrmark0673/Marble Madness TG-16/DSC00734WM.jpg) Debug gameplay 3. You'll notice on the first debug screen there's a "Pallette Filter" option. For the above screen shot I chose the "Monochrome" option, but there are like ten different styles to choose from.
That's it for now guys. I hope you're enjoying everything so far!

Haven't tried it to be honest. I could give it a spin I suppose.
I do love the fact that this game has gone undiscovered for 20+ years, and the first question someone has after it's finally unearthed is "What does widescreen do?" Hahahaha!

All I know about the game is that the guy who had the prototype to the arcade of Marble Madness 2 supposedly had the pce/turbo version and he wouldn't dump neither rom. This was of course many years ago on zophar domain's message board (mid to late 90s ish?) and to this day I bet whoever he is probably will never dump the roms. BTW, sorry for the delayed response, been real busy at work as of late just got home. ^^

The Marble Madness 2 arcade rom has been available for years now. Are you sure you're remembering the story correctly? Do you remember if he posted any actual proof of his TG-16 prototype?
I read at one point that there was a Yahoo Japan auction "A long time ago" for a Marble Madness prototype, but I'm wondering if it's all a bunch of internet lore at this point.

Are you familiar with the other ports of the game at this time, such as the NES and SMS? How does this game compare with those? Does it feel as though it is complete, or did you notice any rough points?

Here's a pic of the board to hold you over for a moment (Note: I added the stickers. The EPROMs had no covering when the game was purchased). (http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n223/mrmark0673/Marble Madness TG-16/DSC00716WM.jpg)
As for the preservation of the game, I think I have things under control lol. This ain't my first rodeo fellas. I've purchased, dumped, and preserved hundreds of prototypes over the years. This is nothing new for me.
If he really did decide to dump it thats news to me, all I know is that I haven't been able to find a rom of it anywhere let alone the machine. :P Anyway, back on topic, its great that you posted some screenshots of this game and I hope we see a reproduction coming to a Turbob near you!

Very cool pics. Glad to see one of my favorite multiplayer games of the era on the best system of the time.
Are you familiar with the other ports of the game at this time, such as the NES and SMS? How does this game compare with those? Does it feel as though it is complete, or did you notice any rough points?
There is a Genesis version, although I don't think I ever bothered to try it. :P I never got into Marble Madness. It would still be cool to see how the 16-bit versions compare though.

My thoughts exactly! How are the tunes! Man, this is epic!
Ofcoarse, for me, one of the first things I'm thinking, is that we could finish the game(assuming it's not finished), put it on cd, & I could make redbook tunes for it! This is one of those games I've often tbought about trying to get Nod to create it from scratch, so I can do cd tunes, since we never got the official game released. Heck, maybe we could even have an enhanced mode with more colors, shading, effects, etc. It's probably fairly close to the arcade I would assume.
As to the game itself, I've always wondered if it existed, & just figured any pics of it were mockup's/arcade shots, & nothing more.
BTW, I didn't see anyone else ask this, but, it sounds like you got more then just Marble Madness, or am I wrong? You said, & I quote "I purchased a massive lot of prototype materials from Tengen/Atari, one of which is a Turbografx-16 copy of the unreleased title "Marble Madness."" Maybe you were waiting for someone to point out that there was a "lot" of games you won? :)

BeaglePuss, Congratulations on tracking this one down. What an exciting find! Thanks for generously sharing such nice photos and information. I've been waiting a long time for a MM proto to surface :) Good luck with whatever you decide to do with this treasure.

So it is real! I love the original Marble Madness, and this seems a good conversion, very similar to the Genesis one or even the arcade. Thanks for sharing.

Hahah, this is great! Hope 2 player is implemented. Though as pointed out, it looks like it's pretty much done, I'm sure someone would be able to finish the last bit.
I love it that a gem like this can be found so long after the system "retired". Wonder why they didn't release it though?
Tell you what, if there are credits anywhere on the ROM, maybe we can get hold of someone who was there and find out?

That's what I was thinking too. There's a few different dudes listed on the credits pics - maybe one or more of them can be tracked down and will remember something.

First, let me say that this is truly a wonderful development in the Turbo universe. Thanks*, BeaglePuss. (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcds.png)
*Even if we have to pay a few rupees for the privilege.
i'm really interested in some of the background stories around how you have tracked these down.. the find is awesome.. but the story is almost more interesting to me ;)
Absolutely. I want to hear as much as BeaglePuss is willing to share about procuring this (an other) Tengen/TG-16 items.
(http://junk.tg-16.com/images/hany_in_the_sky.png) Third, I wish Tengen's Off The Wall prototype (http://archives.tg-16.com/turbo_play_0005.htm#more) was traveling a similar path, but it appears to be stuck in a cul-de-sac. (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgsad.png)
(http://junk.tg-16.com/images/hany_in_the_sky.png) Fourth, BeaglePuss: are you holding on to a TG-16 port of Pit Fighter? A playable version of Marble Madness is much more exciting, but there was a time when I would have loved Pit Fighter on TG-16.
Very cool pics. Glad to see one of my favorite multiplayer games of the era on the best system of the time.

Excellent question.
BeaglePuss confirmed that this version of Marble Madness was played to completion (single player mode). Hopefully, whovever played the game (if it wasn't Beagle himself) can share his/her thoughts on how this version compares to other ports of Marble Madness.
Overall, I have been pleased with the quality of Tengen's commercial releases (on various platforms), so I think it really comes down to: does this prototype represent a 95-100% complete game? Retail-ready?
Personally, I want to play this no matter what (I love Marble Madness). I'll gladly play a TG-16 version, even if it is rough around the edges.
Absolutely! BeaglePuss, if you have any pity on us, allow us to hear some of the music. Sure, it might accompany a video (should you share one), but I'm talking about some extended, 100%, unadulterated Marble Madness tunes.

Definitely looking forward to hearing how this exchange took place (came from Tengen/Atari themselves?). And how it contrasts with the NES and Genesis ports.
PS: Esteban, I can't imagine Pit Fighter for Turbo CD would have been any less a disaster than the SNES port.

oh yeh agree I'd be interested to see a PC Engine/TurboGrafx port. The Pit Fighter arcade game was below average but not diabolical, it's just that SNES port was sooooooo crap.

Pit Fighter on Snes was handled by THQ. Back then THQ was a pretty subpar game maker, and in Pit Fighters case, it was heavily censored by THQ and characters were missing. More or less it resembled a 25-40 percent complete port really and should not have been released. At one point THQ announced plans to release Time Killers on Snes. Most everyone I knew loved Time Killers, so we were all pretty horrified by that announcement considering how bad Pit Fighter was handled by them.

Great find Beaglepuss / Mr. Mark! It always amazes me how you can dig up all of these prototypes, although having money helps out a lot I'm sure (which I don't have :P) Im really looking forward to reading more information about this game, and if you do end up going the route of a HuCard release *fingers crossed* I know you'll have no trouble getting the majority of the forums members here to preorder a copy. As much as I want to hear the music, its one of those things I would like to wait and hear playing in person. Marble madness was definitely a fun game, one of the things i like about it is that even when I talk to my friends who aren't that into gaming, marble madness is one of those games that they remember back in the day.

UPDATE: Beaglepuss called me with some news...
Sadly, the EPROM was mislabeled. Instead of owning a Marble Madness prototype, he actually possesses a prototype of RBI Baseball. All is not lost, however. You can listen to songs from Marble Madness when pitching. Remarkably, all of the players on your team resemble marbles with stubby appendages.

Wow nice screenshot of widescreen mode, is that also in HD ;-)
Remarkably, the developers found a way to present the marble itself in HD. As you know, the PCE/TG-16 hardware couldn't support full widescreen HD, so they compromised. Inspect the screenshot closely and you will see what I mean. (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png)

Good call on their part. Focus groups indicate that the marble is the main thing players look at why playing Marble Madness, so even though it only takes up 0.007% of the screen, the game is 85% HD.
Title: Re: I got myself a Marble Madness prototype!
Post by: Joe Redifer on November 17, 2012, 11:39:47 AM
The normal Marble Madness doesn't fill the screen all the way from left to right. There are black borders on the sides to mimic the arcade aspect ratio. The widescreen mode simply switches the resolution of the game so that the visual area is stretched to the edges and there are no black bars. The Mega Drive version has this same mode.
Now why hasn't anyone dumped a ROM of this prototype?

At this point I think it is fake, because the limited info provided. It appears the poster did a one and done to stir things up and have a little fun.
At least I hope it is fake. I can get into a joke / rumor as much as the next guy. If the original poster is actual one of these "I get something rare and will keep it for myself with no videos kind of guys," he can go f*ck himself. Nothing worse in any gaming community than these pretentious dickheads. There is no logic that if a playthrough video of a game is posted, it will lower its value.

Such a gushing bloodshed of optimism brought the usual crowd of fun haters around and much drama ensued ("it's copyrighted!" "settle for the NES version!" "there are 600 other games on the PCE, why add one more!" "give away your $10,000 game for free!") Haven't heard anything from Beagle since.
It's most likely real. Beagle has a history of releasing stuff for a token return on the purchase price and provided links in that other thread. I wandered into some other VG forum recently and he seems to be a respected member of other boards, he's just not a NEC diehard.

I would gladly pay a fair $$$ to help offset Beagle's cost for acquiring Marble Madness.
The real kicker, though, and I think I am at liberty to reveal this, is that Beagle has recently acquired PC Cocoron (though it seems to be a very early build and most likely is missing elements that would have been in the final game).
I hope this works out well for both Beaglepuss and the TG-16 community. I'd love to play a TG-16 version of Marble Madness (even if it is rough around the edges/incomplete).

PC Cocoron has been a grail for years. I would definitely contribute towards seeing both of these dumped and released to the community.

Wait, what? Are you serious, or joking?

BeaglePuss is one of the founders of NintendoAge/SegaAge websites/forums. He's on them all the time. They have released prototype roms in the past, not sure what they're looking to do with this one.

I know some people aren't in for getting this game from Beaglepuss, but I personally wish we could pull funds together or something to acquire it. Even though I suck at the game, I've always had an obsession with Marble Madness, along with Paperboy, 720, & Toobin'. I've tried reaching out to Beagle to see if there's any way I can help, like maybe doing redbook tunes for a cd release, but I have yet to receive an answer. :(

Lock this thread already. The guy came here and waved his dick around and now it is essentially dead.
