Title: Factory stickers on TG-16 boxes
Post by: FiftyQuid on July 12, 2012, 05:01:42 PM
Hi everyone, I recently bought New Adventure Island.  It came with the box, in what I have to assume is the original shrink-wrap.  The shrink-wrap is 'crisp' for the lack of a better word.  It's cracked in spots and seems like it's melted in other spots.  Overall I think the box is in fine shape considering it's age.

Anyway, I noticed the residue from some sticker glue on the front.  I'm assuming there was probably a price sticker there at one point.  What really has me curious though is this orange sticker on the side.  It's actually on the box underneath the shrink wrap.  So if the shrink-wrap is original, then how did this sticker get under it?  Does 3112 have some sort of significance?  Is it Hudson Soft's factory inventory label?  I'm not a box collector so I don't know anything about factory stickers.

I'm curious to know if anyone has any info on this or has seen anything similar on a box they've come across.  I find the history of TG-16 fascinating so I'm wondering if there is any history behind this.

Here is the orange sticker/decal;

Here's the front.  You can see the round sticker residue in the top right corner.

Hard to tell if something is in its original shrink wrap or not, there are tons of people who re-shrink wrap games and falsely sell them as new.

Re the sticker, it looks more like a store sticker to me rather than something that NEC stuck on there.

Yeah, I understand it's difficult to tell.  You can usually look and tell if something is old.  The shrink-wrap is definitely not new.  I use to work retail so I'm use to seeing re-wrapped cellophane.  Most new shrink-wrap is well shrink-wrap, where as the old stuff was more like a wrap on an ice cream sandwich.  This stuff just feels old.  It's not brittle, but you want to be careful handling it (if you care about this stuff).

Doesn't look like original shrinkwrap to me and I've never seen a sticker like that. Does it have the hanging tab?

I have seen a number of official--looking UPC stickers under original shrinkwarp, but nothing like this.

That is not a factory sealed game.

The shrinkwrap might be old, but it might not be original.  I remember seeing a department store shrinkwrap games (I think they may have been returns?) at the counter, many years ago.  I remember because it was the first time I'd ever seen it, and realised how they got it on there.

Whether that makes it brittle or not, I have no idea.  Is it sealed with a seam, or is it folded like a present?

It's definitely a reseal.  None of the games I've popped open had such extensively puckered cellophane along the bottom edge, and I've never seen a sticker like that (how would a handwritten sticker sneak into the middle of a factory assembly line?).

Just for clarity's sake, the game is not sealed.  The seal has been broken and this shrink-warp/cellophane has just been left on the box.

It's not sealed with a seam, but it's not folded like a present either.  It's one of those shrink-wrappers that works like a tube.  Insert the game, the shrink process starts.  It's like, well... exactly like shrink-wrap.

@Necro ~ What you're saying makes sense.  I don't see it being added on the factory floor.  The whole vision of New Adventure Island coming off a factory assembly line and being packed into boxes for shipping to retailers has given me a bit of a chub though.  Thanks for that image!

That sticker might be used for a rental store to help them quickly locate the game on a shelf and to relocate the box when the game is returned so the box can be placed back on the rental rack. Looks properly placed for such use.

I sure hope you didn't pay "new and sealed" price for it, that game is expensive enough as is.

so then where's the confusion? when i first saw the sticker, it just screams an inventory sticker, whether it's a rental store, game store, or something similar.

It didn't scream that to me so that's why I asked.

If does not have the hanging, it's not original seal.
About the sticker...it seem's the old system I used in the videoclub
