My registration finally got approved, so today is my first day for posting here, although I've been lurking for a few months.
I live in the Chicago-land area, and my personal TurboGrafx history follows:
I had a friend back around '90 who had a TurboGrafx-16 and I would see his great games (Cadash, Alien Crush, etc...), and I always wanted to get a TurboGrafx, but I just didn't have the funds. I would even play Keith Courage or whatever sample game that any retail stores in my area had on display, and I would drool over all of the 'neat' TurboGrafx-16 games and such. (All that I had experience with at the time was Atari and NES.) Then around '95 or so after I had a job, I picked up a TurboGrafx-16 system and about 20 games (most has the jewel case and instruction manual). I don't remember all of the games that I had, but I think that I had 2 CIB copies of Tonma and a CIB copy of Magical Chase - just kidding. Actually I know that I had Order of the Griffen, Cadash, Galaga '90, Drop Off, Tricky Kick, Legendary Axe, Ghost Manor, Blazing Lasers, Victory Run, Sidearms, Double Dungeons, Final Lap Twin, Dungeon Explorer, Deep Blue, Neutopia, Neutopia II, and Keith Courage, but I can't remember the rest. I never could find a 5-player adapter or extra controllers, so everything stayed 1-player. Then, in '97, I boxed everything up for a while. Not long after the Gameboy Advance came out, I became enamored with it, but I just didn't have the cash at the time, so I made a stupid trade around 2000. I traded my entire TurboGrafx collection to someone for a new Game Boy Advance with a new copy of Advance Wars and one other game, the title escapes me right now. :( Now, I'm mentally kicking myself over that trade. About a 15 months ago or so, I decided to get back into retro gaming, and I really missed my TurboGrafx, so I eBayed some stuff, found a few things at a used video game store, and just yesterday picked up about another 17 HuCard games at a local Chicago-area convention, so now my TurboGrafx collection stands as follows:
HuCard, Jewel Case, Instruction Manual, Retail Box
HC, JC, IM, RB - All non-HuCard only have a HuCard sleeve as well, but all of my HuCard-only are lacking sleeves.

(If I counted correctly, that only 61 out of the 95 U.S.-released HuCard games.)
PC Engine (Although, I don't have an adapter yet, so I have no way to play this game yet.)
HC - Street Fighter II
I have no CD games, since I have no way to play them, but I may consider getting into those if I can find a good CD add-on or TurboDuo that I can get.
Anyway, now I'm trying to decide where I'm going with this TurboGrafx stuff. I have decided that whatever games I have, that I do want to at least have the Jewel Case (or maybe a decent repro case) and the original instruction manual, which means that I need to upgrade my HuCard-only games, but after that... Do I want to try to collect the entire U.S.-released HuCard set? Do I want to just get a couple more of the good games, while ignoring the expensive ones and the not-so-good-ones? Do I want to venture into the CD games? Do I want to venture into the PC Engine games?

Welcome, nice to see you here :) It looks like you have quite a collection already!
There are a lot of incredible CD games, so I would definitely advise you to keep an eye out for a cheap beater Duo-R or something. Since you can already play US hucards, might as well go for a japanese Duo/R/RX so you can play Japanese hucards as well, and still enjoy CD games from all regions.
-
Yes, you deffinitely want to get into cd games. Half or more of the meat(opinions vary) of the Turbo is on cd, including most of the homebrew stuff we've been making(though, Arkhan has new Hucard's in the works!). But homebrew or not, there's a healthy chunk of solid to incredible games on cd. Quickly off the top of my head:
Ys Book 1 & 2
Ys 4: Dawn of Ys(Ys 3 is also good, but opinions vary)
Dracula X: Rondo of Blood
Legend of Xanadu
Legend of Xanadu 2
Fray CD: Xak Gaiden
Gate of Thunder
Lords of Thunder
Sapphire
Lords of the Rising Sun
Last Alert(terrible voice acting, great game)
Exile
Exile Wicked Phenomenom
Dungeon Explorer 2
Beyond Shadowgate
Dynastic Hero
Gradius 2
Dragon Slayer Legend of Heroes
Cosmic Fantasy 2(& the rest of the series if anyone finishes translating them)
Kaze Kiri
Vasteel
the Valis series
Terraforming
Super Darius
Super Darius 2
Spriggan
Spriggan Mark 2
Splash Lake
Bonanza Bros.
the Far East of Eden games

Nice pick ups and glad to see you came back to the DARK SIDE . I agree ParanoiaDragon cd games are the way to go WAY TO MANY AWESOME GAMES.
-
I'm on the side of HuCards. I reckon the general standard of Hueys is higher than CD games. And apart from a few must-have CD games and a few cheaper-than-usual games I picked up, my stuff is primarily Huey.
Oh, but I'm PCE rather than TG, so maybe that makes a difference.

I see you have China Warrior.
Smart move!

Yep, I was the quite tall white guy with glasses with the (very) short Phillipina wife trailing. I bought up several of the TurboGrafx-16 games from the guy in the corner who had a bunch of stuff. (I forgot his name right now.) I'm planning on going again next year, and I'll probably set up a vendor booth, since I've got a bunch of extra SNES/SFC games.

Welcome aboard! +1 on getting a CD system; there's just too many great games that you'd miss going huey only.

nice collection!
61 of 95 means just HUcards, right?

Welcome to the site. :)

That's correct. I have never played or even had access or the ability to play any of the CD games. I hope to acquire either the CD add-on or a Turbo-Duo and some CD games at some point in the future, but for now, I'm just concentrating on getting HuCard games with instruction manuals and jewel cases. (Retail boxes would be nice, but are not as necessary in my book.)
-
cd games now you must get into, yes.
-
It will probably be easier for you to find a Duo system. According to the experts, it seems it is best to get a PC Engine Duo R or RX.
Since you already have an american system then you won't need the Duo system to be region modded.
I agree with your focus on getting cards, and get a few cheap good CD games to begin with. Then you could later focus on the expensive ones (Gate of Thunder, Rondo of Blood, etc).

I believe you are on the path to nirvana.
Don't rush into the CD-ROM games (almost everyone here is impulsive, except soop. But that's because he's on tranquilizers).
Seriously, though, there are lots of wonderful HuCards to enjoy. Yes, you will eventually check out all the fantastic CD-ROM games, but there's no harm in delaying gratification.
However...and this is a big one...lots of Japanese HuCards are cheaper than their North American counterparts.
So...dilemma. It might actually make sense to grab a Japanese Duo R/RX sooner (say, when you finish getting all the cheap domestic HuCards). Why spend $$$ on inflated North American HuCards when it can fund a Duo R/RX? Plus, there are tons of FANTASTIC Japanese-only HuCards.
Anyway, I love my TG-16 and PCE consoles (I have a bunch) and I play HuCards all the time.
Hopefully, you will carve your own path to heaven. (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png)

Thanks all for the thoughts and ideas.
I do think that I probably ought to plan to get Japanese Duo R/RX so that I can both play Japanese HuCards and also the complete library of CD games. I already have 1 Japanese HuCard game - Street Fighter II. Also, I've been comparing prices and it does seem that the Japanese HuCard games' prices are usually considerably cheaper than U.S. HuCards.
A question that I have though, is does anyone have a list of the U.S.-released HuCard games for which the Japanese PC Engine HuCard games are almost identical, and the game could be enjoyed equally? I did notice that the U.S. release of Magical Chase for example, had enhanced graphics and such, but is the game still basically the same, and can it be enjoyed equally? (Side note: Even the Japanese version seems to run $150-200. Is this price actually what I'm going to have to pay to be able to get this game? I'm not really into emulation and such, although I am okay with repros of non-released in the U.S. games.
-
There's only a couple US exclusive Hu cards. Every other game is a Japanese game and they are all playable if you get the PCE version unless there's a lot of text. Even Neutopia is completely playable though despite the little bit of text you have to deal with. Most townspeople only give you trivial information.

Not to mention having to get the CD attachment with the rare Super system card to play the Super CD Rom games. It's pretty much Duo or nothing.

If you have a burning desire to play Magical Chase, a flash cart is the way to go. Yes, the Japanese version (there were two printings) is generally $150+

Thanks for the response. Maybe I'll look into that option, although I'm really all about individual cartridges.

Well, I just got my first ever disc-based video game system last night! :D :D :D
I just got a region-modded PCEngine Duo from Keith Courage.
In anticipation of this momentous occasion, I had already picked up a few Turbo CD games, and I enjoyed trying a couple of them out in the few minutes that I had.
I've registered at PCE Daisakusen! and here's my current Turbo collection with my 12 Turbo CD games added.
http://www.pcedaisakusen.net/2/34/532/show-collection.htm
If anyone wants to give me some ideas for which games I should pursue next, I'd love to hear them. I have absolutely no experience with any Turbo CD games or PCEngine games other than online reviews.
-
Welcome.
-
Buster Brothers, Cosmic Fantasy 2, Dragon Slayer: Legend of Heroes, Valis 2 have all given me TONS of hours of enjoyment. Congrats, and welcome to the CD realm! I'd start digging into PCE CD games, such as Spriggan and Star Parodia once you've tired of what you've got. I recently picked up Lords of the Rising Sun, but it's got a pretty steep learning curve so I'ms till trying to get into it.

Thanks for the suggestions. I already know that I'm definitely going to be getting Dracula X: Rondo of Blood, but I'm really pretty clueless when it comes to the PCEngine games and all Turbo CD games.

There are a lot of CD games (US and Japan) that will bring much enjoyment.
(1) Wonderboy III: Monster Lair is a favorite of mine and totally enjoyable even if you only play a few stages. To beat the game, though, takes a bit of dedication (there are a LOT of stages, later stages are challenging, the shoot-em-up prelude to bosses can feel tedious after 40 minutes, etc.). However, there are some cheat codes to help folks who struggle with the game.
(2) If you like Valis II, you should get Valis III and/or IV.
(3) Neo Nectaris is a nice strategy game, even for folks who don't normally like strategy games.

Hey, new to the site as well, This post helped a lot, as I also have never had the ability to get my hands on the CD stuff.
So my story of how i got here is a little diffrent. My dad picked up a TG with games in the early 90's. Bonk's Adventure was the first Video Game I ever played, (take that mario bros.) We never really got anything new for it as the SNES quickly took over in the household and we could never find anything for it. However we did have some cool games Bonk's Adventure and Revenge, Splatterhouse, Boxy boy, Pac Land, Parasol Stars and a few others.
As time went on, I was always drawn back to the TG. taking it out and setting it up every now and then. A few months ago, I deiced to try to collect as many TG turbochip games as I could, and replay all the games now that I had a bit of means to do so. By buying lots and trading and reselling, I have gone form under 20 games to around 30 with no real out of pocket costs. However I quickly became mad at the pricing in some stores on online for this stuff, and the number of people buying anything cheap to jack up the price for collectors. So I was selling off a HU CARD CIC copy on ebay I had, complaining that whoever bought it would just try to resell it. Well a week later looking for information I stumbled across the site here, and came across a familiar looking name (turns out thier ebay acount and this acount have the same name, and they are an active member on here) and a raffle for the card I had just sold off. Well here I was worrying someone was going to profit off my auction and they were giving away their extra stuff from me for people to enjoy the TG as much as I DO!. Signed up later that day. just approved today.
Hoping to be able to give away some of my copies as i get them and get some other people into the system.
