Hello,

Are you talking about the "freeze-flying-enemies-and-use-them-as-platforms" segment of the game?

I'll let you read my comment from the old thread termis linked to...

Despite what folks say, it is not that difficult. Timing and rhythm go a long way. Most folks forget about the latter. "Precision Timing" is too clinical ("sterile") as a strategy and doesn't help me get into the flow of the game.

I don't know if that will make sense to you, but it is my approach to any game where challenging platforming is required.

BOTTOM LINE: This segment from Valis III is totally fair, IMO. Yes, it is challenging, but it is fair. There are countless other games with platforming requirements that are cheap (and thus unfair)...think of the games where you can fall through "invisible" blocks that are indistinguishable from regular parts of a platform. Sheer memorization is required and I find it annoying, frustrating.

ALSO: Some of you haven't played enough Metroid (NES). It has many unforgiving "freeze-flying-enemies-and-use-them-as-platforms" segments (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png).

I tend to use Valna or whatever the princess' name is that is the magic user becuase of her longer range attacks and her ice spell freezes more enemies so I can jump on them, but it's just so dang frustrating.

I believe she is the best choice. (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png)

Yes, it is frustrating. I still remember going crazy (I got the game when it was originally released). That was a long time ago (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png).

First game in a long while where I would shout obscenities and have the urge to throw the controller :P

There's even harder levels after this one, too. I recall the ice cave level being the most difficult...

I've been trying to beat Monster Lair lately and I've come very close to throwing my Turbo pad into the television set! Close to beating it now!

Ouch yeah I remember that stage of the game. It can be very frustrating and cheap getting hit and falling off the frozen enemies or not timing it right. I also remember towards the end of the level there are some cheap range attack enemies who will try and knock you off into the water. That was the hardest part of the game for me. There are some frustrating spots afterwards, but that was the worst of it.

I had that game when it first came out as well and remember that level being frustrating as hell always loved the game tho i couldn't beat the last guy.

the freezing the flying guys can be very hit or miss to be honest it was a bit of a game breaker the game would be much better without it, pretty shore the mega drive one doest have that freezing section and its a easyer game all around.

After you figure stuff out, and then execute the platforming, then, yes, the sense of accomplishment is sublime.

I think it makes the Turbo version of Valis III superior to all others. (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png)

I remember it taking forever to get past this point and then I beat the bosses after 1 or 2 tries.  I think it was the ones that you probably wanted to use the slide attack against (if I'm remembering it correctly).

I thought the concept of freezing enemies to use as delicate, temporary platforms was both novel and very fun! Especially the ones where you have to slide off, causing the character's body to stretch just enough to cover the gap between ledges.

I agree this is a very tough spot.  When I got to it recently I actually couldn't remember what to do and started to think that I had found a game ending glitch.  I wasn't prepared by the gameplay for having to freeze enemies and jump on them, or puzzle solving in general.  Still, the satisfaction of actually clearing that segment is definitely as high or higher as any of the great gaming "moments'.

I got put off from the game, but I'll come back to it in a few months. Usually beat a hard part in the game when you least expect it, etc.

Have you tried looking up YouTube videos? I'm sure there's one out there that you can study for help. Just know that it's very possible to beat, you'll get the hang of it eventually.

Yeah, about two weeks ago started playing Valid III, freezing enemies stage drove me nuts but after what felt like a million tries I got it, persistence is key, you'll get used to it.

It's not that bad. It's challenging at first, sure.

You've conquered shooters that make me choke, panic and cry.

Surely you can handle Valis III.  (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png)

I havent gotten very far in valis 3. Is the platforming experience worse than the mega man disappearing blocks?

There is one stage that stumps the PUSSYFOOTERS. It looks gorgeous (ancient Greece, aquaduct with flowing, clean water, nice clean, crisp everything) and, as a nice Red Book song plays, you have to do a really kool move with magic.

I'd say it was equivalent to certain parts in Metroid where you have to do, essentially, the same thing, but vertically up a long shaft instead of horizontally across an aquaduct.

If you beat Metroid, Valis III is a super cakewalk.  (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png)

UPDATE: Come on, PUSSYFOOTERS, have you beaten the game yet, or what?

I got CLOSE, like past the ice platforming and about to jump on the last plot of land when I was hit by an archer. I went to play it the next day and my duo stopped reading discs so I am at a standstill. I was pretty gung ho on clearing it so I am really upset about my duo's problems right now :( I will definitely update it when I do

I still haven't beaten the ice/water level in Valis 3. I was going to buy Valis 2 now, but the going price seems to be $90 on Ebay. Good price?

Hell no. Get the Japanese version if US price is that high.

Watch English cinemas on YouTube. The story is convoluted, anyway, so YouTube is a nice solution.

yeah jp valis games are cheap. About $10-15 each for II, III and IV and about $30 for I which actually came out last since it was a port/remake of the original.
