Title: The TG16/PCE good deal thread
Post by: BigusSchmuck on July 23, 2012, 10:09:20 AM
I thought I would start this off as some members have been discussing this. So without further ado: http://www.ebay.com/itm/6ft-NEC-Turbo-Grafx-Extension-Cable-/270982625710?pt=US_Video_Cables_Adapters&hash=item3f17d2b9ae Under $4 for a tg16 extension cable, definitely cheaper than what I have been seeing as of late.

Nice! Now this is the shit I was talking about. Members helping out members. :)
Could someone explain the Shipping Details to me? It says "Shipping to: United States, Canada", then at the bottom of the very same section it says "This seller does not ship to Canada." WTF?

If he absolutely wont ship to canada, I'll buy however many sets you would want and send them to you and eat the shipping costs. You helped me out with the loose HuCard lot, so this is the least I can do. Let me know

BTW this could also be in Chit-Chat since you need to be logged in for that as well. Not really much to "fight" about except through bidding, so chit-chat would be a better section.

I know nothing about these extension cords. Can you plug it into your TG-16, then plug your Turbo Tap into this cord, and then play multi-player games with the controllers plugged into the Turbo Tap, or do I need to purchase 5 of these?

If the turbo tap is able to be plugged into your Turbo Grafx 16 (same with the controller), then yes, you can use those extension cables for your method.

I have heard on these forums that the generic cables you can get elsewhere (for around $1 each) won't work for plugging in a multitap, so you'd need to buy an extension for each controller you plug into the multitap. Is this one also a generic cable? Since they have so many available I would guess so. In that case you might encounter the same problem as with other cables and would need at least two for multiplayer games.

It's been well documented that using an extension cord between the tap and system (any version) will cause troubles.

Even for the official NEC cables? Not that I ever see then anywhere, but it might be a reason to pick one up one day.

I was worried about that, but so far no problems after playing 4 player bomberman via tap and extension on mine, and I left it plugged in for a while with 1 player games.

You could try to cut away some of that with an sharp blade--maybe enough to make it fit. Just an idea, in case you really wanted to use it with your tap :)

I bought one of these cables because I was curious about it.
So, just to clarify:
(1) DIN male fits into the TG-16 console (2) DIN male doesn't fit into any of the 5 controller ports on TurboTap (due to clearance issues).
Thanks in advance.

So, are you saying that the extension cord(s) that you bought from this guy fits and works perfectly fine with extending from the console to the Turbo Tap AND/OR from the Turbo Tap to the controller? Or only from the console to the Turbo Tap as esteban indicates. Or is your cord different from the original eBay link?

Basically, here's my situation. When I play TurboGrafx, it's usually by myself, so one extension cord from console to controller will usually work fine. But, when I want to play Cadash with my friend, the short cords hamper our seating a bit, so I'd like to purchase some of these cords, but I just want to make sure of what I'm getting into here. At minimum, I need 1 cord from console to Turbo Tap, but I'm considering getting 5-6 with one for each of my controllers for when I want to play 5-player.

If you use an extension cable from the system to the tap itself you're going to run into problems when doing multi-player. These particular cables have a plastic hood over the end that prevent them from sliding into the turbo tap and connecting. So you have to file down the hood to get them to fit into the Turbo Tap.

Sorry to be dense here, but you're telling me that using an extension cord between the console and the Turbo Tap will or at least possibly will cause problems with multi-player games, such as button presses not registered, direction presses not being accurate, and such, but that using the same cord between the Turbo Tap and a controller will NOT have those same problems? Apparently, using the extension cord between the console and a single controller (for 1-player games) is fine. Right?
I want to get some extension cords, but if they're just going to cause problems, then maybe I'm better off not getting them.

Yeah, here, this is the exact one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mini-Din-Minidin-8-pin-MF-Black-Extension-6-ft-cable-/230578078870?pt=US_Audio_Cables_Adapters&hash=item35af864496
It fits the tap and the controller. I'm really pleased with it, and so far no problems with 4 player bomberman.
As far as Turbo-taps go though, it might be wise to point out which one I'm using: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEC-PC-Engine-5-Player-Multi-Tap-Boxed-Japan-/271024793668?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f1a562844
As you can see, it has a tail, so if you're using a different tap, YMMV

Yes, an extension between the console and the tap can cause problems with button presses not being registered. However, the same cord between the tap and individual controllers plugged into the tap will not have those problems. Using an extension between the console and a single controller is fine as well.

This listing doesn't come with the instruction manual. Is it still considered to be a good deal without the manual? And if so, then can a repro manual or something be made so that one wouldn't have to read an online walkthrough just to be able to play the game?

Manual doesn't really help. It is pretty straightforward for non-war sim fans. If you go for it and need help, I can scan in the Enhlish manual and post the pics online. Not a great deal without the manual, map or sleeve, but the game is worth that price to play it. Of course, so is the ridiculously cheap PCE version. The cinemas are meaningless repeated talking heads and the in-game voice descriptions of units aren't clear and don't really give any insight about what they really do. English or Japanese, you're going to have to try out each unit to figure them out.

It seems that the U.S. System Card 3.0 has been really expensive as of late, and this seemed a bit cheaper than what they've been up for. And with it including both the case, the Gate of Thunder 3-in-1 pack-in game, the 3 instruction manuals, and the system 2.0 card, if I needed system cards (which I don't, because I have a Duo), I think that I'd be tempted to bid. Actually, when I saw this last noght, no one had bid on it yet, so it had a Buy It Now price of $250.00 up. We'll see if the bidding goes higher than $250.00.

The BIN was still there this morning. I put in a bid for $150 to get rid of the BIN. The last SSC 3.0 + GoT sold in the forums for $185. I'm sure this will go for over $200, but I won't be the one buying it.

I didn't realize how high these Super System 3 cards had gotten.... I only have an Arcade Card Pro, so I have to use my modded TG16 with TG-CD.

The U.S. 3.0 card is never a good deal.
Well, it was a great deal in 1993 (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png).

Not a bad price for a loose PC Engine GT for $66.33 shipped. Seller states its working (probably original caps) but no battery cover. Includes baseball hucard.
This eBay seller in Hong Kong is choijimmy on our forum. If you contact him directly, then I'm sure that he'll work with you. If anyone needs any more details, then just PM me. He's a great guy. I have had 4 or 5 good transactions with him. Buy with confidence.

The one I linked to is a US copy. I cant say the same for the stuff listed on Amazon, though I suspect they are all Japanese copies on there.

I bought Cadash on Amazon last year and got a US copy. I noticed that the manual insert cover looked odd- turned out that whoever owned it had cut out the cover of the box so that it would fit into the jewel case. Then manual was in fine shape too, so I'm not sure why this was done.

Looks like the PCE version. I did manage to snag a turbo copy from Amazon last year complete minus the cardboard box for 20ish. Amazon is really a crap shoot, but sometimes they do offer better deals than ebay.

as far as I can tell, its just the rental exclusive stuff thats picking up in value. Clayfighter SC I found as a mistake for $5 (the value of the normal one) and traded it for all that stuff. its worth around $150ish give or take

but damn, that's a good deal for you!

Selling all my N64 stuff now, thats how it works for me, I'll treasure a collection and swear I'll never sell, but once I sell the keystone of the collection (Clayfighter SC in this case) the rest is good to go. http://www.nintendoage.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=6&threadid=90575 I hunted down a lot of the rarer stuff as well. Now I'll keep some games for myself (like my Conkers and Harvest moon which I have had since launch day, and kept them CIB and in very good shape ^-^)
but anyway, back on topic ^-^ glad to see someone agrees it wasn't a bad trade, was a lil nervous about doing it, but decided I'd get more fun out of a TurboExpress than Clayfighter (which isn't that great of a game)

Nice!! I think Batman is my next game to find. On my two Expresses, I'm gonna repair them both, keep one stock and do the LCD + AV out mod on the other. I'll be sending it to thesteve for that. Now not sure if I want to do a 3.5" LCD in it or find a good 2.5" screen to keep it looking original... hmm.....

That is a decent deal. I didn't manage to get it. Couldn't have even if I had noticed it. $350 this time of year on games doesn't really sit well with me or my wife.
What's up with that Knight Rider game? Is it a good game of just cashing in on the brand?

From there the auction was pulled and put back up with a $350 buy it now and someone bought it. Lucky........ Still wonder if anyone here got it.

Given the ~7500 feedback of the buyer, it is most likely a reseller, and we will see all the items again, marked up.

$350 is a steal considering the last couple of ebay auctions on Dungeon Explorer 2 alone go for that much. A shame I didn't catch it neither. I would have bought it and raffled off my loose Dungeon Explorer 2 and Winds of Thunder.

Those $380 and $350 BINs seem a little high, and that was back in Sept/Oct, when all TG stuff went retarded high for a short period. Figured if someone was desperate for the US version, this would have been an OK snag.

Only a 3 day auction, could possibly be won on the cheap. The CD version of this game seems absurdly rare, but only desirable to completists.
So, is anyone considering this game? It is one of the 9 remaining normally-released in the U.S. TurboGrafx CD games that I don't have, so I might take a chance on this one if no one else is planning to try to get it.

Actually, fiftyquid made me realize, this guy seems a little clueless. (Look at his previous listings, he seems a little... off.) Might want to send him a message and confirm this is the CD and not the Hucard, since it would be an easy screw up, especially for someone who seems prone to screw ups.

However, the VGPC total on the games is 29.25, so you basically save a buck, plus about $6 in shipping if you were to buy these two pieces of trash alone.

Same seller has Kiaidan for $54 shipped. Is that a good price?
Download 2 is a $30 game, but has been difficult to find at an appropriate price since November. Be careful on eBay, as many of the lowest priced copies have had damage that is not noticeable in photos. It is a must own signature PCE game that is very unique and technically impressive.
Anyone who doesn't own Kiaidan should jump on it at $54, even though it's been steadily coming down in price this past year. Another unique and beautiful "only on PCE" game.
You should save your posts for a "not so overpriced" or "buyers guide" sort of thread, as they tend to be the kinds of prices most of us quote people wondering what they should pay as buyers.

Not a terrible deal, but the way the prices of Lords of Thunder alone makes up for it: http://www.ebay.com/itm/251250329595?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

Not bad, but I already had all four of the games. I hope that they went to a good home.

anybody in the boston area, this is in New Bedford.
That is a great starter setup, hope it ends up in good hands. I'm about an hour away, otherwise I'd snatch it up.
I agree. If someone's in the area, pick it up! I'd like to get a Turbobooster Plus myself.

Aside from the sodering job near the power plug, this isn't a bad deal at all: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Turbo-Duo-System-w-CD-games-Original-USA-Version-see-Turbografx-16-vintage-game-/221216490299?pt=Video_Games&hash=item338187c33b

You could give it a best offer. I guess its better than some of the listings I have seen on ebay as of late.

As of recent yes - it goes for as much as all the late HuCards now - 75 without box - 100 with by ebay pricing. 25% less I'd say outside of retail. Even less from forum members - mine complete with box cost $35 :)

I think that is about what I paid 2-3 years ago. I ended up selling the box and insert (I don't do boxes) and putting it in a case with a Sparky label.

Honestly that really was a terrible deal. They butchered the power plug port with a iron to I guess force another plug to fit. The system had not been recapped at all, no region mod, no nothing. f*cking terrible deal. Assuming it will be a good deal due to a best offer option is just speculation.

Some reasonably priced buy now PC Engine items from a seller in Japan... -Ave Pad 6 $23 shipped: www.ebay.com/itm/NEC-PC-Engine-Avenue-Pad-6-Button-Controller-Japan-b-/390597393947 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEC-PC-Engine-Avenue-Pad-6-Button-Controller-Japan-b-/390597393947)
ON a side note If anyone is looking for a Region Modded regular Duo/Recapped I'll have one up for grabs shortly. Let me me know if your in the market.
Nice, so you snagged it? I was on the fence about getting it, and held back since I already have a too many CD systems.

i hear ya. I have 3 cd systems already, but this will allow me to pass 1 on here. Plus I didn't have a fighting pad or art of fighting yet. So it was worth it for me to upgrade. Still was a difficult to spend the money on a system i already had a version of. Lol.

CIB Super Star Soldier for $94 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/300962402792?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649)
Seems to be rather less than what other CIB copies have been going for this year. If I didn't already have a CIB copy, I'd probably be jumping on this one, since CIB copies have been hard to come by.

Fair price on a US Turbo Duo system...$169.94 shipped. Sound drops, so it needs a cap job. Might also have a loose A/V plug joints.
Someone buy it, so I don't have to. 8-[
Unfortunately too late, someone has put in a bid. Too bad (not for the seller though) as it'll likely go higher than the BIN price.
Yeah, it was a pretty decent deal. If I weren't strapped for cash right now, I'd have been sorely tempted.

Anybody looking for Faussete Amour (http://www.pcengine.co.uk/HTML_Games/Faussete_Amour.htm)? If I didn't already have a copy, then I would try to buy this one (http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEC-PC-Engine-Super-CD-Rom-FAUSSETE-AMOUR-Japan-/311008898875?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4869932f3b). I know that it's not cheap, but I actually enjoy the game, even though it is definitely not as good as Rondo.

They've all sold for under $300, even when actually complete:
Yeah, the listed under $200 price point is still a little high for not being complete, but still not too bad.
All that really matters is the disc and manual, back insert is easy to reproduce. Mister Sparky has it for sale along with a cover/manual insert, having purchased this from him, I can say that they look pretty good.

White PC Engine console with loose Splatterhouse for $60 shipped from Japan. Says it hasn't been recently tested but seems like a decent price if it actually works.
