Title: Has anyone beaten "Turrican" ?
Post by: storino03 on July 25, 2012, 01:17:15 PM
So I was going through the games I haven't popped in yet, since I got a TG16 bundle off of Craigslist in March/April. I can't even get past the first level! Just seems like my power level goes down really fast. The music is pretty sweet though :)

This one has been in my watch list a few times, but I keep missing out by $1.     Maybe I'll avoid it if it's an impossible game.  :)

I posted a complete playthrough of this game on youtube, split up into four videos (one for each world).

World 1:
World 2:
World 3:
World 4:

Please note though that I am a very experienced player of this game and make it look rather easy.

This game is a monster, I think I did beat it, but with cheats.  I suck anyways, so it's rare for me to beat alot of the old action games, though I have my moments.

Rover is a machine. He'll probably need to swoop in and conquer Turrican and half a dozen other games if that "Beating every Turbo game" thread is going to see completion.

With Turrican you need to have ALOT and i mean ALOT of Patience.

Very nearly completed it on the Amiga, but there's a gamebreaking bug where you can get trapped and never get out.  I was furious, as it was (and is) one of my favorite games.

This game is annoying hard, not challenging hard.  I have never been able to beat it, but I honestly have never played it enough either, because the game sucks.

Beat this game when I was a teen. You get into a dumb buck rogers like rocketship at the end and escape, and the mechtower thing kinda explodes, if you call large chunky rocks flying out of it as exploding. Was pretty lame.

It's a love or hate kind of game for most it seems.  I grew up with the amiga and ST, so I was always into Turrican.  I personally love the game on the turbo.  Other versions of turrican after this one have you bounce back when you get hit.  The enemies don't go through you and REALLY drain your energy like this version.  It makes it more enjoyable to play.

Sadly, the ending is one of the best parts of the game.

Taking it out and never playing it again is the best part.

Turrican sucks.  It's what happens if Metroid and Contra have a kid, and the kid turns out to be a mongoloid.

There's a free fan remake out there.  I haven't played it, but it looks good.

I am a champion of unloved games, but I still can't find mind room in my heart for Turrican HuCard.

I haven't totally given up on it. But I'm not about to invest time in it, yet.

Of course, I've been saying this for 20 years. (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png)

The only way I ever enjoyed this game was with the cheat codes on. The game is stupid hard. I like fun-difficult games. But Turrican never was fun for me.

Brilliant!

Oh sweet. Might give it a chance just to play through the game. Though there are some games where you have to purposely die in order to advance. Not saying this is one of them--just came across a few in the past.

In keeping with Turrican-related news, there was a kickstarter a few months ago for some 4 disc Limited Edition soundtrack by the original musician. It got funded. I was going to do it, but ultimately canceled my pledge.

Impossamole is easily twice as good as Turrican.  I actually mildly enjoy Impossamole.

I can sadly say I have never beaten ANY Turrican (TG, GEN, SNES or other).  It is just too much for me.

On the flip-side, there is a new Dreamcast game called Gunlord (quick call the police! I'm talking about a non TG game!  ), that is similar is style but MUCH more fun and easier (at least to me anyway).

Gunlord is also on Neo Geo if I'm not mistaken; a huge pricetag too.

MY DILEMMA: I occasionally (once every year or three) try to tackle Turrican.

I don't use any assistance (no guides/FAQs/videos) because it is immensely more enjoyable to figure out everything myself.

BUT, I'm wondering if I should just throw up my arms and watch Rover's videos.

They are tempting me...

I watched the first one. I'm on a slow ass connection at my parents house at the moment, so I have to wait until next week. Yeah, watching people play games on Youtube loses some of the challenge of it all, but some games it's the only way.

I hear ya. I'm trying to decide if Turrican is one of them.

I mean...I've actually tried. But will I really focus time and energy on Turrican when there are other games that I'm much more motivated to tackle?

There is a part of me that does not want to surrentder to a stupid TG-16 game that has haunted me since it was released. Like Yo' Bro. I don't think I've beaten it. I know I will one day, for that is my Yo' Bro destiny. I like Yo' Bro.

But Turrican?

I'M NOT GOING TO LET THE BASTARD BEAT ME. I'M GONNA BEAT TURRICAN ON MY OWN. NO HELP. NO VIDEOS.

But, maybe I'll listen to Rover's videos, just to hear the music, for inspiration.

If you are a masochist, you will keep playing it after 10-15 minutes. That is, if you are skilled enough to survive 10-15 minutes.

I love games where you explore and must find vital supplies, which Turrican does provide. The problem, for me, is that Turrican on PCE, for whatever reason, fails to "grab me" and hold my attention.

I am not giving up on this game, though. I will beat the damn piece of garbage. One day.

Turrican is a game of gluttony and memory... you have to consume extra lives en masse, and you have to remember where they are. The two main problems I've always had with the game is that it's way too easy to lose your life rapidly (no knockback, obnoxious enemies), and the backgrounds in the first world are super-boring. Its visuals pick up in the second world but goes flat again in the last level due to the sheer amount of suck involved. Eventually, if you practice enough, you'll learn when to have your extra weapons at the ready (as some parts throw tough enemies at you), and when to simply sacrifice a life to respawn with a fresh stock of options. Knowing when to use the invincible buzzsaw is also extremely important... it's absolutely critical to surviving certain boss battles. Another detail is your main weapon; the spread shot is best for most of the game, but the laser helps for most bosses (exceptions: worlds 1-3 and 2-1). And of course, finding 1UP stashes will allow you to survive longer... hell, there's one at the very start of the first level. Hidden powerup boxes are all over the place... hell, I found one I'd never found before in 4-1 when I was making the video. :) They will usually give you a fully-powered weapon and a few of each extra weapon, plus full life and temporary invincibility. The huge ones in world 3 occasionally drop 1UPs too.

One thing that may appear important, but really isn't, is collecting crystals. They help your score, and collecting enough wins you a continue, but once you've aced how the game works, you won't need any continues anyway... they're useful for maxing out your score but that's only if you're trying to beat records.

Turrican is a game of gluttony and memory...

I think that's why if you didn't own this game originally back in the day it's hard to ever get into now.  When you had a TurboGrafx and only 4 games and one was Turrican there was a lot more incentive to trudge through it.  If somebody just picked up Keith Courage today they'd go what a  pile, but I think it holds a special place in many peoples hearts because it was the only game many probably had to play for a while and so we were forced to play it and because of that, in a way we have fond memories of it.  Well, some of us :)

Thats the most truthful assessment of "nostalgia" ever spoken!

Although, I think sometimes being "forced" (so to speak) to trudge through a game makes you see some good (or even great!) things about a game that you may not have ever discovered had you only played for a little bit.

Target Earth (another ridiculously hard game) is one of my all time favorite games of all time, and I HATED it when I first got it.  But after going through it and learning all its little kinks & quirks, it became a game that has never left (nor ever will) my possession.  :)

Hahahhahahahahhaa.

Don't worry. That is probably everybody's first impression of Turrican on PCE.

You can't just run around aimlessly to make progress. You should (IMHO), systematically explore, make note of powerups and dangerous areas, etc.

The problem, of course, is that I still think the game sucks! And I've been at it for 20 odd years.

You actually encouraged me to try Turrican once again. No, I haven't actually played it yet, but I have pulled it out and placed it next to my TG-16. So, should I feel inspired... (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png)

I love reading everything you just wrote because there weren't any spoilers, yet you provided a few concrete strategies to get through a game that would otherwise feel a bit intimidating.

I don't know why I can't make headway in Turrican when I've tackled Athena (NES) and Super Pitfall (NES).

Because until you do memorize where stuff is (especially enemies!), the game is brutal. This is one of those games that takes a certain level of patience to conquer. And yeah... if you didn't play it back in the day, it won't appeal to you very much today... it looks rather primitive and the difficulty is very frustrating.

It's because I suck at Turrican that I want to beat it (with no assistance). I don't feel that way about Falcon or Gunboat or Ballistix. Why? Because Turrican is in a genre I love and the fact that I suck at it annoys me (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png).
