Title: cheap scart to hdmi up scaller
Post by: fraggore on July 29, 2012, 05:04:20 AM
I am looking in to buying a upscaller Have not got much cash to spare other wise i would get a xrgb, i will be looking to spend some where around £30 to £50 so i was wondering have any of you here had any experience with a scaller.

few questions
are they any good as i looking to play on my monitor via HDMI.
looking for something that will work with pretty much most retro consoles.
any suggestions on what i should be looking at.
any problems that can happen.

i have seen some on ebay for around the £32 mark that will upscal to 1080p am i wasting my time with one of them and saving for a xrgb is what i should be doing ? the price really puts me off.

here are some of the ones i have found

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SCART-To-HDMI-1080p-HD-UPSCALER-Converter-Adapter-FOR-Sky-Wii-VHS-STB-DVD-HDTV-/300614927083?pt=UK_Computing_Sound_Vision_Video_Cables_Adapters&hash=item45fe0bc2eb

I forgot to say i do have a crt tv i am using at the moment but would like the option of playing the console on my lcd monitor.

any feed back would be useful.

What type of consoles are we talking about here? I don't think either of the ones you link to would be ideal for older consoles with 240P output.

I can't speak from personal experience but from what I've read/seen, there's no point in forking out dollars for one of those cheapo converters, especially for use with the consoles you've listed. You might as well just hook them up via their regular composite output.

A better option, assuming your TV is capable, would be to connect via component. All the consoles barring 2 of the ones you listed output a native RGB signal, so all you would need is the appropriate SCART cable for each console and an RGB to YUV encoder, such as the CSY-2100 or any one of its clones.

I have a cheap one. It looks terrible to me on my 1080p TV and won't work with RGB modified consoles (only stuff that already supports RGB out like Sega, Neo Geo, etc).

just looking now you can pick one up from about £32 upwards its not a bad idear would have to add audio cables to the scart leads easy done.
but i was really looking for hdmi option if posable shame the xrgb is so much i have read the new one with scanline generator is the nads.

another option if anyone has tried it is this but not fully shore how well it will work.

little more than i wanted to spend and looks a bit messy.

if you can get over the need to get HDMI, try an Atlona RGB to Component board. It's not that expensive and works pretty well.

I got one of these in the end was only £20 upscales to 720p fine for what i want so i thought worth a try

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/120964726452?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

its got 2 scart inputs a hdmi switch and composite and s-video inputs all to hdmi out.

does a good job works with the pc engine and mega drive haven't tried my other consoles yet.

on my monitor this is what i wanted it for its perfect no noticeable lag its has multiple output resolutions but on my Samsung tv is has lag my tv must be up scaling it again and causing lag so for £20 and he upgraded me to next day for no extra cost postage cant fault it,now i can use my console on my pc monitor pretty handy to have.

i have one of the following
http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Arcade-game-RGB-CGA-EGA-YUV-to-VGA-HD-video-converter-board-HD9800-GBS8200-/170860805754?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27c818fe7a
some people say it sucks but i have no issues with it, and it is worth it considering the price.

yea was looking at them but i wanted hdmi but i think the one you got would be better on the tv and if you had a scanline generator would look sweet.
