Title: What happened to my Duo???
Post by: galam on July 29, 2012, 01:12:21 PM
So I was getting ready to play some Last Alert today and when the disc started up there was no sound.  I tried the headphones and the same thing, nothing.
I sat through the opening scene in silence, but then when I started playing, the sound effects seemed to be just fine, but no music.  It appears that any music or cutscene track is dead, but oddly the in game sounds seem to work just fine.  Anybody know what could have happened here?
I went to try a huey and the sound is perfect, music and effects with no issue.  I hope somebody out there has a helpful word.

this is a common failure
its related to leaking capacitors.
replace the caps, or have it done.
may need some traces repaired

But that error-description seems to be bit strange. Usually if it is the dry-cap problem, you will still get some red book audio via the headphone output. At least that how it was with my few previously DUOs which had (or still have) that problem.

When did you played the DUO the last time galam? And was it OK then?

Also try to switch on the DUO for an hour or so and listen again.

Could be indeed dryed caps, but it also could be a problem with reading the red book audio from the CD. Had that with a DUO-R before.

if its loading well, it wouldnt be read errors.
i have repaired a few, with total loss of redbook and ADPCM.
the issue has been traces around the heatsinks, damaged by the cap leakage.

No audio except sound effects through the headphones and a lot of static.

Well, kinda. The CDROM2 will make a much more genuine attempt to read data. If the CD audio skips whatsoever though its not even going to try to come back until it goes to the next track.

I had the same exact problem galam.  I replaced "most" of the caps that were releated to the adpcm sound.  It's described in detail here: http://www.pcenginefx.com/forums/index.php?topic=960.0 and here:  http://www.pcenginefx.com/forums/index.php?topic=3249.0
I only did the ones d-lite talked about and the sound came back like a champ.  However I will need to get the other caps taken care of cause it's only a matter of time before it happens again.  So far though no issues.  Luckily the ones that I replaced had no leakage and the traces were still good.  Send it out to one of the guys here.  They do awesome work! :D  Sorry to hear about your issue.  No red book audio makes me

galam, my friend, I am sorry this happened to you. It can be fixed, but you will not be able to fully experience PCE until then. (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcdsad.png)

One of these days, I'm going to cry about all the caps leaking in my consoles. I'm worried (for real).
