Title: so many games so little time
Post by: bob on August 02, 2012, 02:21:25 AM
If I add up all my consoles and mame games, I easily have over 1000 games at my disposal. Yesterday, I found myself with about 45 minutes to play a quick one. I knew I didn't really have enough time to fully get invested in anything and I found it very difficult to choose what to play in such a short time window. Anyway, I landed on New Super Mario Bros for Wii.

This got me thinking, what game is your "go to" game in a pinch?

Street Fighter II always gets a bash, as it's quick and easy to get into and I can stop playing it at any time.

PC Engine wise, and I will probably cop grief for this but who cares :) - I've actually been enjoying a quick shot of Final Match Tennis when time is short.

Good question.  It depends how much time I have, and usually I take my Vita out with me.

At home if I have some hours, then Forza 4 is a good look.  On the PCE, I quite like some Pacland if I want to zone out, or Soldier Blade.

But then when I get new games, I tend to give them a run, put them high on the list.  I also Love Street Fighter II.

"Go-to" games I never tire of:
(1) CD = Buster Bros.
(2) HuCard = Spin Pair

(3) NES = Balloon Fight

(4) Arcade = Joust

(5) SMS = Wonderboy

(6) Genesis = Gaiares

(7) Apple ][ = Lode Runner / Archon

(8) PC DOS = Block Out

(9) Amiga = Lemmings

(10) SNES = Mohawk & Headphone Jack

(11) Gameboy = Tetris

I'll stop there...

If I don't have enough time to get into whatever game(s) I'm currently working on, I'll grab Hatris or go for a few shewty time attack rounds - usually Soldier Blade.

Buster bros. is my next one. I need to get my hands on a copy of that.

Games like sfII, tetris, and many others are good fodder, but i dont know if i can even play those for 45 mins straight.  Its a tough amount of time to work with. Good thing i didnt turn on my PS3, since that would have wasted half my time doing an update. I F'n hate that shit.

Usually pull out the master system if I have a few minutes to kill. For most SMS games I just see how far I can get in one set of lives/continues then switch off the game unless I do really badly the first time through. Dragon Crystal is a great one for about 45 minutes but sometimes a game can go longer than that if you are doing really well. Still never get tired of that one even after playing it for years and years.

Lately I've been playing the Space Harrier ports on SMS, TG, and 32X.

I'll pop in a beat em up of some variety, but other than that I'll play Gate of thunder, or perhaps Radilgy on DC

COD World at War for Pc multiplayer on NRNS server, but only because I'm f*cking awesome.

Though I own the game, the server does allow people with cracked copies of the game to play, and I know there is a copy floating around on the torrent sites that can be used if anyone is interested but too cheap to pay the 20 bucks to buy the game. Keep in mind though that NRNS doesn't bullshit around. No bunny hopping is allowed, people will get kicked, along with aimbot shit and wall hackers. Admins actively play and kick people who break the rules. They don't bother with punkbuster, instead opting to actively monitor the players on their own.

I typically play a fighting game, baseball game, puzzle game, or a few turns of a strategy game if I have a short time.  I don't have a specific go to game.

Thats the beauty of shooters,  They can not only be played (satisfactorily) in short bursts, but some can even be beaten in about 1/2 hour.  :)

Although a nice speedrun of Strider is also great fun in under 30 minutes.  :)

R-Type is really good for this. I tend to reset if I die anyway, so if I can beat it I can beat it, if not, I try again. Either way it's a quick game.

I like to take my express when I'm out and about. I usually take SFII or the neo pc-e flash cart loaded with games like Aero Blasters, Air Zonk, Alien Crush, bonks games, china warrior, legendary axe, ninja spirit, splatter house, super star soldiers, soldier blade and Jackie Chan. Ooh and R-type.

I forgot to mention that if I am downstairs, I will play DDR!

And it is perfect for filling any void in time.

Lately, my pick-up-and-play games are as follows:

GBA: Wolfenstein 3D

GB: Nemesis, Tetris

SMS: GG Aleste II, Thunder Blade

Famicom: Gradius II, Astro Fang

I don't have any PCE games on here because 1. OBEYing is proving to be quite a chore for a number of reasons at the moment, and 2. I only have one game.  I'll soon have another, though, so perhaps that'll make me more apt to getting my PCE set up.

Usually I'll play Devil's Crush or Alien Crush.

It always seems like if I've got just a few minutes to kill, I rock those games.  However, when I have time to dedicate to one of the Crush games, it's as if they know and they make a b-line for the drain.  ](*,)
