Title: Proof of concept: potential new ACD game
Post by: nodtveidt on January 05, 2006, 03:17:45 AM
While messing around with the ACD, I figured I'd perhaps try to put my little ACD API to good use. While it's not quite that far yet (still sorting out the engine itself), I figured I'd post a little screenie of the game half-working.

damn nod, you're more productive in 2 days than I am in a year! :D Be sure to incorporate the Strip Fighter 2 engine into this game (just kidding!)...

Nod showed me this last night, it looks really cool with all the prerendered graphics. I can't wait to see what we can make with a Super Grafx Arcade CD :D .

There is also a PC version using OpenGL:

but it's not quite as far along. It looks better than the PCE version naturally, but this background alone takes up more RAM than the PCE's entire system RAM and most of the ACD RAM so obviously it's not gonna fit into the PCE. :D

That's pretty cool, but a shooter or action game would be infinitely cooler.  Especially with the pre-rendered look, that would be totally unique on the Duo.

I don't know if nod plans on making this a full game or not, at least we haven't discussed that. We did make some plans last summer of making a fighting game on Arcade Card that would be KoF style except instead of having characters from the SNK universe, it would have famous Turbo/PCE characters instead, like team Bonk ;) . I've been wanting to make some pre-rendered graphics for a Turbo game, but I have a lot to learn when it comes to making 3d computer graphics. I sort of have an idea of making a rail-shooter like Space Harrier that has a futuristic concept that you would have gotten out of the late 80's/early 90's that would contain pre-rendered sprites (and maybe backgrounds) along with other snazzy effects. I also picture it having a rock-techno-ish soundtrack that would be catchy as hell along with sound effects that really stick out. Definitely something I need to work on more.

Didn't Sapphire use pre-rendered graphics?

Yeah Sapphire did for some stuff (ships and some background elements if I remember correctly, not the whole game though), but that's the only one I can think of.

I think Sapphire is the only PCE game with pre-rendered graphics. Did Falcon and Gunboat use pre-rendered tiles to make that polygon looking land?

what about John Madden with that 3D intro thingy, that was pretty impressive, was that pre rendered??  well it was definately 3D and very impressive for our beloved turbo!!

EDIT:  Is that better?  :)

That's like saying the Jaguar is superior because it was supposedely a "64-bit" system at it's time which was 2-3 larger than the others for it's time!

I think that it was realtime 3D, hence the simplicity.

If it is realtime, its very impressive. If its not then they're awful.

I think that a lot of PCE games had prerendered 'cgi' in them, but none(including Sapphire) entirely made up of prerendered 3D graphics.

Yeah, why don't you "do the math?", it has 9-bit graphics!

Yeah...the whole bits thing, like I said in that post, was always irrelevant but you know how marketing people work...

Hm, interesting. You know, when Paranoia used to promote your game development group to me a while back, all I thought is it'll never last. Heh. I like the system and all, but for a new game, I'd rather see it on the PC platform and what not, taking advantage of a more advanced system, rather than being developed for primitive hardware out of nostalgia. I see now that you folks are far more hardcore than I'll ever be, clearly. A little too much for me in fact. :p Anyway, just a drive-by comment I wanted to make. Carry on. ;)
