Even though I used to play through it quite often, there's something about this level of Castle of Illusion that makes my blood run cold every time I play. The sudden waterfalls and knowing that one missed jump means plunging to your doom. It's not that hard, but this level just makes me very nervous.

At the end of dynastic hero their is a similar platform nightmare. I love the game, i hated that level with every ounce of my being.
-
I always choke when I get to the last boss:

Wolfenball 3D
I'd break the HuCARD in half if it wasn't so valuable. (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png)
When beaglepuss revisits the forums, I might consider trading him my Wolfenball 3D prototype for his Marble Madness prototype.

The level in Valis 3 where you have to freeze the enemies to make it across. Maybe it's easy for some, but that level ....... ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) ](*,)

Hahaha! This! ^

first level of rastan saga (arcade).
-
Yea, i forgot about valis III, that sucked hard to. I can't remember the level, but thier is one point in legendary axe i can never get by. everytime i try to time this jump just right the enemy hits me and i fall.
-
I'm surprised no one hasn't just posted "the entire f*cking game of Ninja Gaiden II" and been done with it.
-
Ninja Gaiden II has a pretty balanced difficulty. 1, on the other hand, is really brutal at the end with some near impossible platforming, complete with the oh so lovely "bird knocks you into bottomless pit" combined with "losing at the boss kicks you back 3 stages."
I've been playing Ninja Gaiden 3 (japanese difficulty) and it's been kicking my ass as well, but I am totally unfamiliar with it. It's much harder than 2 but (so far) easier than 1.
My vote goes to that level of Castlevania where Death is the boss. There's a trick to it, if I can get and keep the holy water (the game gives you one at the start of the level) then I can get past the last part pretty easily. Holy water makes the Medusa heads, the axe knights, and even Death pretty easy. But if I don't make it to the end with the water...holy balls, it's either play perfectly or die horribly.
-
but it's funney, I always felt the same fear in that CoI level :)
btw. what a great game. had to be said from time to time :)
-
I hate those BIRDS ](*,) ](*,)
-
Ninja gaiden II did not kick my ass nearly as bad as NG1. I could burn my way through the game right up until the level you have to dodge crows while grabbing the cliffs. come to think of it, every platformer that required split second timing usually kicked my ass. Castlevania 1 and 3 were brutal. Makes me wonder how i ever finished Dracula X.

lol, weren't that bats :)

*The last tower in Exile 2.

BIG BOSS TIMES!! scaryyy

-The Castle in Legendary Axe
-Sandcrawler in Super Star Wars
-Final Level of Blazing Lazers, it's not that hard, but for the first year in a half I had the game this was where I hit the wall. I still shit a brick every time I get to it.
-
But my most scary moment in gaming life probably remains to the
very first encounter with the first lvl boss in R-Type as a kid.
Damn, that gave me few real nightmares afterwards. Very intense stuff :D
-
That level of Castle of Illusion is such a pita. Ugh, I get the willies just thinking about it. My 4 yr old loves watching me play that game and usually we turn it off about the time I reach that level so he doesn't hear any adult language come out of me. :P
The only other game that pops into my head right now is the last level of Air Zonk. It's stupid long. Getting there is almost a cakewalk compared to that last level.
And I agree with Lilgrafx, the last level of Blazing Lazers gives me pretty much the same feeling.
-
original Zelda, quest 2 dungeon 7 and 8. There are so many warps and some are one way.
-
The last level of cybercore. it's just too much. Even if it's not hard, it's out of proportion to the rest of the game.
also, all of Daimakaimura.
-
Tatsujin, THE WHOLE f*ckING GAME!
-
Verytex is a fairly easy vert shooter on the MD. Only till you get to the last boss. Then it's "please just put down the controller cause you'll more than likely just eat shit and die" I only have beaten the game once.
-
LIl, i can't even get to the last level of blazing lazers so you're doing better than me. Level 6 in legend of zelda with the wizrobes was always a pain to me. Especially when i tried it with the no sword challenge. I eventually made it all the way to ganon without ever picking up a sword, but i could not kill him.

Verytex, huh? I have never played it. I must add this to my "want" list. (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png)

The mountain level on Battle of Olympus

on the PCE, HELL YEAS!! :P

Just remember, for a good breather in the final stage of Air Zonk, that you can just put Zonk at the very bottom of the screen under the conveyer belt part, & do NOT shoot, & you'll get thru it just fine. The bee's leave you alone, & you never run into the venus Zonk traps since you're not shooting to open them up!

Good to know! I'll give that a shot next time. Thanks!
-
probably any area on Final Fantasy XI especially when you are low level or the monsters are higher level than you, and they detect your presence and you get raped...losing 2 hours worth of leveling up..
-
Cheetahmen2. No one has been able to beat the game without cheating.
-
I used to fear the Turbob Tunnel in Battletoads.
but then I memorized that shit and now I giggle at it like a fag.
Certain parts of Sotb 2 and 3 really creep me out AND annoy me because they're hard.

But of course; oh and this freaking dude at the arcade "BITD" (Back In The Day) ;)

Terra Tubes is the worst level my opinion. Especially the swimming parts. Right behind it would be the Snake pit levels 3 and 4 (if you don't warp, which you should).
-
I also really fear most of the levels of Snake Rattle n Roll on NES.
That game was brilliant, but f*ck, it was hard after about level 4.
-
snake rattle and roll kicks my ass on level 10. I eventually got to the point were i could damn near blow through the levels without dying. then level 10 would destroy me every time. till this day i can't get by it.

You will not regret it esteban. Very awesome shootie on the MD. It's by Asmik and the music is by a couple very awesome and well known composers. Hitoshi Sakimoto, Masaharu Iwata, JKL Furukawa
Again the game is very easy, but man that last level boss will make you want to kick in your TV like a rock star.
-
level 3? in Ninja Warriors.
you get to the boss area and suddenly - BAM! chainsaw wielding samurai butcher robot.
still catches me off guard when i'm playing, but when i'm just thinking about it, i'm like "damn, that's awesome."
-
The Great Palace in Zelda II. Just getting there is a pain (die and do it all over), and actually making it to Thunderbird and beating him is a feat in my gaming years that I have only done twice.
Tourian in Metroid.
-

I completed the game ONE time.
ONE. SINGLE. TIME.
I was 11, and it took an entire weekend of flailing/leaving the game paused/screaming at the TV.
I tried doing it again multiple times and still get butt f*cked.
I hate when sometimes you're just plowing through the game and you f*ck up just a little and then you are HOSED.
but man, I love that game so much. The music is one of the best parts.
It's like, f*cked up honky tonk nonsense.

Ha! I am intrigued by the EASY --> IMPOSSIBLE transition.
Of course, I'm also a sucker for any halfway decent soundtrack (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png).

How about Wizards and Warriors 2: Iron Sword and all of it is pretty freaking hard. Its especially funny how easily birds kick your ass considering Fabio (the guy on the front cover) go smashed by a goose while riding a roller coaster. I did manage to finish it though..

The jumping in that game was so dumbf*cked.
I dunno how the first one was so good and that one was so jacked.
Fabio's a tool.

I had the exact same problem with valis 3 and gates of thunder. I think it was level 7 in valis 3 i could not get by no matter how hard i tried, then one day i just tweaked and shot through the whole game without dying once. I know it sounds absurd, but its the only time i have pulled that off. Gates of thunder was similar, died, died, died, tweaked and blew threw it on three men.
-
Yep. I've experienced similar things with a few other games. It's fun when it happens.
I should go fire up SRnR again. They really did an excellent job with that game.
-
I have never heard of, let alone played, anything with the preposterous title of Snake, Rattle and Roll.
I choose to remain ignorant on the matter, as well.
-
Shame as its very colorful, with great sound and animation for the nes. Its caveat is the controls. the game is 3d isometric which does not work well for some of the insane jumps required to complete the levels. Oh did i mention you also have to do it before time runs out?

Oh, snap.
You had me at "isometric".
I'm a sucker for that perspective, especially if this is like Solstice but more action-oriented.
DAMN.

basically your a snake that eats these little dots to grow longer. you not only need to eat so many dots to complete a stage, you also have to dodge many obstacles. some dots move faster than others making it more challenging, but you can get power ups to make your snake stronger. The game was programmed by rare and really is pretty amazing for its time.

I remember that game, wasn't bad as long as you have another person play along with you (it is a 2 player simultaneous game). About the only thing I remember is me and my brother fighting over the little pellets to get your snake to grow longer.
-
exactly, two players makes it much more manageable

Well, hot damn. I'm a sucker for any snake-getting-larger game, too (Gomola Speed, anyone?).
-
snake larger eh? are we compensating for something

Speaking of 3d isometric and fearing game levels, I hate the one forest level that's pretty much a maze in Landstalker. I like landstalker, but the isometric view doesn't make the game play all that well when jumps are required. That maze/forest level is a bitch to get through and remember. I will always hate it. It's one reason I will probably only ever play through that game once and only once.
-
Xiga at the end of Radian Silvergun. When it turns into the shit-hawk and rains death diamonds on you.
It makes my neck vein throb, my eyes bulge and helps my kids learn new words not acceptable at elementary school.
-
well i certianly learned a new term. I'm not aware of the phrase "shit-hawk" being penned anywhere :D
-
Maya level in Quackshot,
The level in Kid Chameleon where the wall is closing in on you.
All of Faxanadu.
JJ and Jeff.
-
some spiderman game on snes i there was a stage with electricity and i could never figure out how to get past it. I think it might of been a boss level also. And freaking milons secret castle all of it.
-
ninja spirit - the whole game. so intense :)
-
TURRICAN for TG-16. The whole friggin' game.

When I was 7 years old playing SMB3 at a friends house, we somehow came to believe that those flame-tailed flying bombs in world 6 would not only kill you if you let them go off, but they would also disable the NES for 3 whole days. Needless to say, whenever he came on the screen, we went apeshit. His 5 year old brother often started crying.
To this day, I still freak out a little when I see that guy.

Oh yeah, how about Out of this World? Especially the first level with those one toothed worms, I hate those damn things. I did eventually finish this game though, its too bad the ending sucked so much balls.

I never could get very far in Out of this World. :p I made much better progress in Flashback, but that was ages ago and now I can't remember what kept me from completing it. I need to try to beat it one of these days.

The sequel, The Heart of an Alien isn't much easier neither. Flashback I have many fond memories of that game. Its too bad more modern games aren't as hard as these early platformers, kids these days have it so easy. :P

This in Castlevania 3.
The only ways I was able to pass it are cheaply using Alucard to turn into a bat, or just taking a different route entirely.
