Title: What is the best version of Tetris?
Post by: soop on August 11, 2012, 12:34:30 AM
For me Tetris DX on the Gameboy is close to perfect.  I'd have liked the original music, but everything about it is spot-on!

Nothing quite like an impromptu Tetris challenge if you carry a couple of GB pockets about with you and a link cable.

Any 8-bit version, particularly the Tengen one. More importantly, put the TV on mute and run this through your speakers:

Tetris (Philips CD-i)

The music and relaxing backgrounds try and sooth and relax you while the dreadful controls and natural challenge of Tetris keep you worked up.  Its a nice clash of feelings.

As others have said, NES Tengen Tetris was great. I really put the most hours in with the original Gameboy version, though. Ha!

I'm gonna go one step further and say that I liked the arcade version of Tetris a lot (Tengen NES was modeled on the arcade version, IIRC). However, I didn't get to play it nearly as much as I wanted to.

Tengen Tetris (arcade version or NES version).

The version I played the most is on Virtual Boy.

Tengen made a prototype for TG-16 based on the arcade version.

beaglepuss has the prototype, but won't reveal if it is playable, or completed, or anything.

Tetris (GB) or Tetris DX (GBC). Decades of trying have produced nothing better.

I want to try Tetris DX. I don't have GBC, but I have the Gameboy adapter for SNES. Do you think this is a feasible way to play? Or should I just get a Gameboy color?

I know that one of the reasons why I love Tetris (GB) so much is because I love the size of the original GB and the pad/buttons are in a great location. It just feels perfect. My fear is that I won't be able to re-create this. No, I'm not overly worried, but it is a factor to consider (especially since we're talking about the most "ideal" way to appreciate tetris).

Disney's Magical Tetris Challenge on N64 is surprisingly good. I'm not a Disney or N64 fan but man this is one of my favorite versions of Tetris. I like NES and GB Tetris but I like newer ports a lot as well. The official online Tetris is also excellent.

I missed this earlier. I'm not particularly in love with it (as the "Archetype of Tetris"), but I am most certainly intrigued by how odd this version is. This is most certainly the black sheep of the Tetris legacy.

Since I appreciate novelties, I would most certainly love to play this version.

If you play it on the Super Gameboy it won't have the added color, and the color is just about the only thing DX added. I think it also added a battery so your scores would save, that's a good thing for sure.

The GBC itself is kind of shitty so...not sure what the best way to play this game is. Probably with a Gameboy Light or modded OG Gameboy, honestly.I quite enjoy playing games on the Super Gameboy.

I have modded 4 gameboys with different colored backlights and its not all that its cracked up to be. some games stand out some don't look so go. using an original gameboy with a standard backlight works pretty well. biverting the lcd works even better for tetris, but once again not so well with some games. using a GBAsp is probably the best modern portable solution.

Original Gameboy Tetris was a phenomenon for a reason, it is the best.

Anyone ever play the Neo Geo Tetris, Joy Joy Kid?  That can be fun with 2 players in short bursts.

I have two backlit DMG's (blue and white) and your right it depends on the game. I also have a frontlit GBC and that works alright but some games look washed out.

I actually like the Tengen version on NES the best.

Tetris/Tetris DX, and Tengen Tetris on the NES.  Nintendo's own Tetris release on the NES sucks.

I actually really enjoy playing original GB games on my GBA SP, setting the color mode to black & white.  I feel like that's the way the games were ideally meant to be played.  That shitty spinach color on the GB was a product of the technology, not a design choice.  And I don't care for the colorization offered by both the Super Gameboy and the GBA.

I wanted to pick up a GBA SP a few years ago but never did. It was so kool-looking that I wasn't going to worry about how it might fit in my hands.

My fear is that the SP is pricey these days? At least that is the impression I have.

I don't mind the blur on the original GB screen for Tetris because it actually *works* for the game (dropping pieces fast *should* be blurry! It makes it seem more exciting). That said, I liked using the Super Gameboy to see what games were like when they weren't constrained by the poor screen...especially games that scroll (platformers, shoot-em-ups).

Aha! I thought Tetris DX added additional play modes or something. Maybe I'm not missing much.

With SP's, I got a AGS 101 model that had a cracked screen and changed out the housing a put in a new lens, it didn't cost too much around $35 all up with the better backlit model.
Title: Re: What is the best version of Tetris?
Post by: HercTNT on August 11, 2012, 09:34:30 AM
another option is to get a gameboy pocket and put in a standard backlight. the GB pocket's screen is clean with no blur. Meka's idea is cheaper though. a gbsp can be found just about anywhere, and broken ones can be fixed up for cheap.

Tetris: The Grand Master 3 is definitely the "best," in my opinion. If you're a tetris nut (like me) and you haven't played it, you seriously should find a way to spend some time with it! There's also an excellent homebrewn TGM3 port on the DS for folks with a flash cart.

I still love all the different versions, though. Every time I'm in an arcade I can't help but sit down in front of atari tetris, hehe.

edit: ah, BlueBMW! I had forgotten all about that CD-i version. I always wanted to play it but have never had the chance... thanks for bringing it back onto my radar :)

Ok, tetris DX is playable on any gameboy, it's on a black cart.

It adds a score system (and a power level), improved 2 player, but crucially, it fixes a minor niggle in the original  that the blocks are less sticky when they land.  If you're serious about tetris, you realise how important this is.  The original wasn't broken, but this little tweek brings DX up to perfection.

The original was a 9.5 out of 10 game, and DX is 10/10.  I just wish it had the music from the original.

Stickiness...you are referring to the amount of time a piece can still be manipulated before it is "locked" into place? I don't mind when this is incredibly unforgiving (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png). Really.

That said, I'm going to have to pick up DX because I feel like I'm the only one who hasn't played it!

I haven't picked up a copy of DX yet, on the back burner for me since DS and Party keep my Tetris fix satisfied.

Local mom and pop game store/arcade has Grandmaster 3 on rotation. A local fan (of the store and Tetris) purchased the PCB himself so he could play it on an arcade cab (candy cab).

I like Tetris Collection on the PS2:
It has some good options for resolution and scan lines so you can get the perfect "feel". From what I gather, it's three Sega arcade ports.
