That things funny as hell.
I used to play Punch Out in the arcade when I was young, then on Nes,loved when they got rid of Tyson and released a normal Punch-Out on Nes.

I rented that baffled as to why it existed and to see if there was any signficant difference. It appears they simply swapped out the sprites for Mike Tyson with some generic caucasion boxer. Was this motivated by racism perhaps?? ;) A whole new NES cart created, printed, sold, simply to take out a black guy in favor of a white guy?? Hmmmmmm...

Seriously, that was such an odd and ackward thing to do. Milk gamers on basically the same game, with swapped sprites. I dunno what prompted this. I'd be interested in reading any inside info on this decision. Was there some clamoring, some demand by gamers, that hey, we really need a reprinting of the Punch Out game, but we want Mike Tyson swapped out for a white dude???

What I read is that it happened after something stupid Tyson did (beating his wife and getting sent to prison I think?).  The second run (like the grey cart zelda games) was done because there was a demand for the games (I believe they were called "Player's Choice" and were basically greatest hits versions), and at the time Nintendo obviously didn't want a wife beating criminal as the star of their game so they just changed him to "Mr Dream" before re-releasing it.

Ah, OK, so the demand was there and they were entirely sold out, hence the reprint, but cause Tyson starting acting a fool, they erased his ass... Gotcha. That's interesting. Heh. I just used to see those carts around and wondered why in the hell would I or anyone else buy this and couldn't believe it was the same exact game after renting it. I believe the system was nearly at the end of its life at that point if I'm not mistaken, so I saw zero wisdom in doing that, but oh well.

Guts is right, because of Tyson screwing up,they removed him on the rerelease.Also,Mr.Dream was the original boss in the arcade anyway.0073735963 baby!

That vid is awesome man.

I also wondered back in the day why anyone would buy the vanilla Punch Out. Since it was so old and there should've been lots of copies of the original around.

But if there actually was a demand, maybe from new video rental stores or something, then I can see why they would.

No, no more of these live action video game videos!!!

Actually I enjoyed this one a lot more than the others, it was also done much better. I have the damn Mr. Dream copy of Punch Out which my bro bought last year at a shop and we didn't notice that it just said "Punch Out" rather than "Mike Tyson's Punchout" so when we made it to Tyson, it was that faggot , peaces & cream smile, Mr. Dream.

Haha, I wasn't really at all pissed of at any time, in fact I enjoyed it because I didn't know about the two different versions. I just used harsh words on Mr. Dream because that guy is a total joke when you see him, haha.

Nintendo loves to sprite swap for fun.

Heck just look at (SMB2) we all know now that game is realy, Doki Doki Panic.

Who knows why, Nintendo didn't release the original, SMB2 in the frist place it puzzle me still to this day.

Oh well still the u.s version was a fun game any ways.

Btw it was release in the u.s on, Super MarioBros AllStars under the title Lost Levels.

They thought that North American video game players were too dumb and that the game was too hard.

I always thought it was because the real mario 2 was just the same graphics but with new harder levels and 1/10 the fun.  Seriously who actually enjoyed the lost levels?  I can't think of anyone I know who actually liked the lost levels anywhere near as much as the other 3.  I think Nintendo made a very smart decision, it was back when they were willing to try new stuff with their flagship franchises (like zelda II) and instead of the US getting a cookie cutter clone of the first game we got something completely unique.

Yeah, but the other 3 weren't all out when SMB2 was released. And people eat up cookie cutter clones. I remember how for what seemed like years, all I wanted was more SMB levels to play.

The one store in my small home town that rented games brought over a bunch of Famicom games with converters and everyone loved SMB2.

We were also lucky enough to get to play SMB3 for like a year before it came out in english. I remember going to see (the?)Wizard and when they unveiled the super mystery secret game, we were all like "that games old!" and talked about how we'd totally win the championship if we got to play.

Anyways, every once in a while some magazine or website or something talks about how Nintendo didn't have the balls to bring it out or something.

I personally think that part of SMB3's success over here was due to the fact that as much as people went crazy over SMB2, we all wanted another real SMB so bad and when it finally arrived, it was that plus so much more.

I agree with GUTS about the whole Mario 2 thing completely. I'm glad they brought out Doki Doki Panic out here instead, I love that game. It makes sense for Nintendo to change a lot of graphics of course though, not only because they needed Mario elements, but there were some graphics that would be considered controversial out here, like in Doki Doki Panic instead of picking up a turtle shell, you actually pick up a totally stereo-typed African man's head, complete with dark black skin, big red lips, and a frizzy afro... jeez.

^^ Haha that's hilarious, I've never actually played the real Doki Doki so I might have to hunt the rom down to try it out now.  I think the funniest racial stereotype was in DJ Boy when you fight the Aunt Jamima looking lady at the end of stage 2, I was like HOW DID THEY GET AWAY WITH THIS??!

Yeah! But I thought that this was edited out of the U.S. version? I always saw DJ Boy in the rental shop, but I never got it because there was always something "better" that my brothers wanted instead. I still think it looks like a kool game. Roller-skating + beat-em-up + racial stereotypes ... how can you go wrong?

As far as Mike Tyson is concerned: I have only played the Mike Tyson version. When it was released, everyone had it. It must have been a huge, huge, huge hit. I vaguely knew that Nintendo later re-released the NES version with Mr. Dream swapped in for MT, but by then the hype and excitement had died down.

As far as Arcade Punch Out is concerned: I didn't play it too often (my quarter lasted longer in Commando), but I remember thinking how "futuristic" and amazing the graphics seemed at the time. Then, when I saw the NES version, I was totally blown away! Nintendo really kicked ass. And Mike Tyson was such a huge celebrity at the time, even non-sports fans (like myself) thought he was fascinating.

QUESTION: Nintendo recycled Punch Out for SNES, but I have only vague memories of playing it. What's the scoop on the SNES version?

I thought Super Punch Out was pretty cool as well, though I still prefer the original Mike Tyson's Punch Out more. I'll have to play Super Punch Out again, I always remember having a good time with that one.

Agreed heck it wasn't a.. new game but still fun none the less 8)

Interesting enough that version was release in jpn as, SMB2 USA imagin that

Still soon as i get a, Famicom DiskDrive i'm gonna find me a copy of, SMB2 even if the game is difficult :P

Just to clarify:

All the following games were released in Japan:

- Doki Doki Panic: Dream Factory (Famicom Disk System)
- Super Mario Bros. USA (Famicom)
- Super Mario Bros. 2 a.k.a. "lost levels" (Famicom)

The funny thing is... They released both Doki Doki Panic: Dream Factory and Super Mario Bros. USA there -- even though it's the same game. Now that's crazy!

I played SNES' Super Punch Out also, but yeah, it just didn't have the same magic... It was OK, but there's nothing like Mike Tyson's Punch Out. I can still play that today and love to test out my reflexes at dodging Mike's knock-out punches and trying to see if I can beat him without getting hit. Challenging, fun, all the fighters with their weird specialities, special passcodes that did various things like allowing you to access Tyson directly or activating a special title bout, etc. all in all, nothing beats it, really. The only and best use out of their MMC2 cart chip apparently.
