Title: Nintendo 3DS... released tomorrow?
Post by: tpivette on August 18, 2012, 01:19:48 PM
OK... so I logged onto the BestBuy website, and it claims the Nintendo 3DS XL is going to be released tomorrow. I always thought most new releases were on Tuesdays (in this case, Aug 21st). So when is the 3DS XL going to be released? I couldnt find any conclusive info online through a google search.

Anyone picking up one of these when it comes out?

I have no idea but Nintendo does release new stuff on Sundays. I think the original DS and DSL were Sunday releases.

Edit: quick google search shows release date is tomorrow (http://www.bgr.com/2012/06/22/nintendo-3ds-xl-release-date-august-19th-199/).

Makes sense, because the new Mario game comes out then too, so they obviously want to use Mario's momentum to boost the sales.

I would love to get one, but I am saving some $ for the new Neo Geo and the Wii U.

I have 3DS as well, with the Ambassador games. I plan to get the XL version (regular is a bit small for long play time to me) and try a system transfer.  Ambassador stuff are supposed to be transferable to other 3DS including XL.

Then I can sell my older 3DS.

Too bad you cant have the rights to your games on two systems.  That would make me a buyer today.

The XL is indeed out today, along with New Super Mario Bros. 2. Nintendo almost always releases their first-party stuff on Sundays. Its release is a year-and-a-half after the 3DS, and the only real difference is that it's bigger. "Whoring out the DS name" seems a bit cynical to me. Sure, I'm assuming money is the key motivator here, but isn't that true for any business? Don't want it? Don't buy it.

It is stupid that you can't have more than one console per account, though. I'm probably going to get my son an XL for Christmas, and it would be awesome if we could have a shared family account for multiple consoles.

(Disclosure: in case my tone didn't give it away, I'm a huge DS fanboy, admittedly. After the TurboGrafx-16/TurboDuo, it's my favorite console. The original DS, IMO, is home to some of the most amazing handheld games ever created).

I like the DS as well, although I only have a DS Lite at the moment. I was waiting for the XL 3DS to come out, before I upgraded... now I just have to convince the wife to shoot on over to Best Buy and put it on her Best Buy card. 0% financing if we spend $350 or more!

I think I eventually will get a PSP though, simply for the Final Fantasy and Ys games that are on that handheld exclusively

But will there be a super cool Zelda edition 3DS XL?  If not, then I'm sticking with my standard 3ds.

Well, bit the bullet and got one. It was the last one they had in stock at this particular Best Buy! Its definitely an upgrade over my DS Lite. Purchased Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance to go along with it. Cant wait to check out the 3D feature (I've never seen it in person)!

My son has the 3DS it really isnt't that special. I will probably wait to upgrade and see how this 3DS XL does. They will probably lower the price with in a few months for the Holidays.

Played for about a half hour so far, wow... what an upgrade over my DS Lite! The screen is twice the size, and the 3D feature is pretty cool. While I cant say it really jumps out at you... it does show depth. Characters have a definite back/middle/fore ground distance on the screen. Pretty cool.

Kingdom Hearts was probably a good game to start the 3D thing off with... gotta love their intro scenes, especially with the larger screen! I can't wait for KH3 to come out

I received an email from Nintendo saying that "New Super Mario Bros. 2" was coming out on Sunday August 19th. When I looked at today's Best Buy flyer, they also advertised the 3DS XL. I figured that they would release a larger system but at least I got the limited edition Zelda model.
