Title: Time to recap something...
Post by: wilykat on August 20, 2012, 04:05:35 PM
Was dusting off my spare CD dock when I noticed something rattling. I took it apart and something big came out. At first I thought it was a huge bug... then I realized bugs don't have 25v47uF marking.

Anyone point me on a how-to take apart the CD base for cap repair?  I got all the screws out but I can't quite remove the upper parts (where CD drive plugs in) from lower part (where TG-16 connector is)

EDIT: the base was working when I checked a few years ago, it doesn't work now.

Wow, I think that's the worst cap I've ever seen.

It came from a spot where the cable connecting the rear ports (A/V and power) goes to. I'd guess the previous owner used the wrong power adapter and blew it up, but remained attached until at one time before I tested it last night when it came loose to rattle around. It also likely caused the remaining metal posts on the board to short out. It was working again when I pulled the posts apart.

There seems to be no guide on disassembly  so I've been taking pictures along the way. That way I can do a full cap work and post a take-apart guide with caps list. Also to find out the correct orientation of that blown cap.
