Title: Need System Storage Ideas for a very cramped space.
Post by: turboswimbz on September 04, 2012, 01:13:53 PM
So I've been all over the forum looking for solutions to holding game consoles, I literally am playing off my dresser.  :(
Was wondering if some of you guys could share how you have your consoles and games stored/displayed. thought it's be cool to get some input and concentrate some of the cool game room/ storage ideas I've seen on here.

Anyone who has an Idea on how to make it work in a very tight space, I need all the help I can get on ideas.

Here's what I've got to work with: (and yes I'm seriously living out of this, every possession is either in the space or in my car,) 7 and 1/2 feet wide by 9 ft long.  no closet, windows along two sides, and somehow I have a twin bed, a long dresser, and an armoire in there.  This leaves 30" by 17" left for my gaming systems and TV.  I'd love to have at the least my Duo, TG16. I have 4 Nintendo systems I'd like to get in there too, even if not hooked up, as a place to store them.  I also have about 40 TG/Duo games that I'd like to be able to store and get to, to play.

Thanks in advance for any ideas?

Yikes. If I had space constraints like that, I'd probably resort to just a TurboExpress and emulators on my laptop with a Mayflash adapter for a couple of years.

For storage, buy some brackets from the hardware store and put a shelf along the top of one of your walls, 12-15" below the ceiling (remember to tap the brackets into their rails with a hammer so the shelf doesn't collapse!).

For systems, forget about the TG16 and just hook up the Duo and maybe a front-loading system (a Duo can sit on top of an original NES fairly well). Put them on a wall shelf or maybe throw out some t-shirts and put the consoles in your top dresser drawer, with a hole drilled in the back of the drawer for cable routing.

Put a peg board bracket or something on the wall to hang your controllers.

If you have any quantity of hucards, store the boxes and cases somewhere and put the cards in a sports card binder like Esteban (where's that picture?)

Good luck!

Here in Japan, that sounds normal lol.  Anyway the key is too build up.  Get some big metal racks.  Cheap, easy to customize, and you can put them all around the room and store stuff up to the ceiling.  Also raise up your bed with bricks or something to store underneath.

Thanks, Like the idea of the Sports card holder.  I've been thinking about using the doors for that and building some kind of shelf.  I have books in them now, but what's cooler, books or a draw full of systems.

Yeah figured some of the guys from Japan would say that it was pretty normal.  I'll have to look into the metal rack idea, might be able to add some much needed flat space.

The closet can be a cool place, it provides ample space for a normal television screen of 20", and you can use be as cheap with racks. Also your stuff is almost out of harms way of dust, or heat sources. I got my big gigantic, NEC, inside on one floor with all my consoles, on another. Below I could add more brackets, and boards for clothing, games etc. I could also put a lock on door as well. Of course that will not stop the MIB. Also the television makes a great height to keep radio devices away from peoples head. It is so great, I think I might install a waterfall inside, with a koi, at my window....hmm.

What am thinking, I am in USA, dem governments got my ballzn

I just wish my Mysterious Song, could come in the mail already.

Sorry when I saw storage and cramped for space I thought you were speaking for hard drive space. :P
I was going to suggest just using your Dreamcast for your emulation station (assuming you have one) or just go with a laptop with a big 1 tb drive attached to it and emulate all your systems.

Wow you almost stayed on topic there, and this sentence is just pure literacy genius: "and you can use be as cheap with racks" Kudos to you sir.

Actually, I was thinking about this, and trying to store my systems elsewhere.  I know where I can pick up a dreamcast for $30, maybe I can talk him down a few bucks.  so I can still play all my games and then some. And i need a new lap top to run some GIS programs anyway.  So this helps more than you think.  Just trying to get ideas together.
Because plan X is this: Get Storage Locker, Turn Said Locker into Game room, Live in Locker.

Don't they prohibit personally living in storage units? There are cameras and security.

Lol. I've done this one before. Twice, once at summer camp and once at college.  if you live in the mid atlantic many, WaWa's will give you free crates if you ask.

I've come up with an idea based on a little of what everyone said here.
Shelves is the secret I think, It'll be cool if I can pull it off.  Working on a way yo run the wires to the outlets and Tv without it looking like like I'm 15 and dirty and never see the light of day.

Get a loft bed from Ikea or somewhere similar.  Then you'll have a lot more space.  Basically, there's a lot of empty space that's never really used over beds (unless you like to jump in the bed?)

I started with shelves back, when I was collecting. I used cardboard, and tape the first time, but the games kept on falling off, and I damaged a gold leaf boxes because I had sharpen pencil below..........

Then I made a shelf with wood and brackets, high up. I "mounted" ( If that is the word ), it to this pieace of wall that is sticking out ( I think it might be a support of some sort ). The brackets came out a bit, and are upside down, so I have to be carefull, not to overload it. Even if you do that, you need to keep your stuff in plastics, or else dust/air will get to whatever you put.

Next I did the ole, library thing, in conjunction with the closet thing. So everybody is in one spot. However I took out a chunk of room space.

I think I am going to get those skinny draws, that climbs up against the wall, and surround the room. This way I can let light in, and have more space to walk around. When I say skinny, I mean almost square shape and small, but has just enough space for something, while taking less then twleve inches of wall space. I forget what those skinny things are called again, but I think many schools, might have them. But the ones I would get would be long draws, instead. I think.

So that is an idea, to save space for sure that I have not done yet. Get those skinny draws/shelf/cupboard/etc, and stack em to the ceiling, but of course if the room is not leveled, those things weigh a ton, and could be deadly, to a small child, elderly or anybody. You know those skinny shelves they use in records? That is what I thinking of. In a place, that stores records and artifacts they use them all the time.
Almost invisible.

This may sound off the wall, but you could always get a rackmount. http://www.rackmountsolutions.net/

I was gonna suggest this http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/20135300/#/80135298 but it's just a few cm too big.  I love that stuff.  Ikea hackers and whatnot.

I actually have something very similar there now. except below the two top squares are shoes bins.  I have it holding many many items.  Including the duo.  Alas I've decied to sell off my TG-16 Systems and extras, except my orginal system from 90 (which will be boxed and stored soon) and just stick with the duo.   I'm going to so the same to all the other decks, except the Wii.  Going to build shelving in the corner up to tyhe celing to hold all the extras.

Hahahahahahhaha. (http://junk.tg-16.com/images/pcgs.png)

FURTHER SPACE SAVING TIPS (I do this):

(1) Do not have all of your consoles out at all times. LIMIT YOURSELF TO 1-2 CONSOLES PER _________ weeks. Focus on a handful of games during this period. Rotate every _______ weeks. This sounds harsh...but you may find yourself enjoying the focus. I do, at least.

(2) Remove all of your clothes from the armoire. Neatly arrange clothes in a large duvet cover (autumn is approaching!). Use armoire for storing yogurt and/or video game paraphernalia.

(3) Get cute little binders for your HuCards. Store jewel cases and manuals in your car.
