Has anyone played the PC Engine version? I think it's all in Japanese so I'm out of luck but how does it compare to other versions on other systems like the Sega CD?
-
I have the Engine version and I kinda got stuck due to the Japanese. Not played any other version so I couldn't compare.

I've played through the segacd and msx versions only. The the pce version was the first to have the Act 3 and voice acting. It was considered a directors cut, but the differences between the pce vs sega cd are just the perverted scenes. I remember in the pce version, Gillian could find a porno tape, but this tape isn't available in the sega cd.
The msx version was translated in english by fans, but I would only consider playing this version after you finish the sega cd. The msx version was a port of the PC88 and its code was not optimized for loading speed. So it takes forever just the load the next scene, but played through it and I loved it. Act 2 is just the best.
The saturn and psx version are total crap compared to the pce or sega cd.
Snatcher was released on the PC88, MSX, PC-Engine, Sega CD, Saturn, PSX.

There was a thread that went into details about some of the differences. I think Black_Tiger participated, since he digs the game. That + Rolins comments will give you a very good idea of how PCE version compares to the others.
-
I've been curious to play the PCE version for awhile now, since I loved the Sega CD one. What I am most curious about is how the PSG sounds in the PCE version. Most people don't like it as much, but I love PSG so I might dig it more.
-
Thanks guys for the info. Just curious but I know the Sega CD has the option of the gun? Do you need it? or was it just an added feature to enhance gameplay. I don't think the PCE version had this gun support. I don't think a gun controller was ever released for PCE but I could be wrong.

Just want to add that you if can't read japanese, getting the pce version isn't worth buying unless your're collecter/fan. On the other hand it's cheaper than the sega cd.
You can try and play though it if you want. Just randomly select commands until the story progresses, which I have been doing for several years while playing Policenauts in japanese.

The gun for the sega cd is purely optional, but exclusive to this port. The pce never had this feature

Isn't the Act 3 system in the PCE version automatic where you just sit and watch the computer kill the enemies?

Maybe, of course I've never played thru the entire pce version before. I do remember reading that Act 3 on the sega cd was more interactive than the pce. In Act 3 on the sega cd version, you had to kill the enemies yourself. So you might be right.
-
Act 3 on PCE is just an hour or so of cinema after walking through a few rooms. In the Sega CD version, they added a couple of fights/shooting scenes, where you finally fight some Snatchers for real.
A lot of graphics in the Sega CD version have been redrawn or touched up. In my personal opinion, most of the redrawn art doesn't look as nice and most of it was used for the Saturn & PSX versions.
I love both versions because they're both good games for what they are(I don't play too many digital comics). But I really prefer the PCE version and yes, I am biased.
I played the PCE game for years before the Sega CD version. The Sega CD is a nice tech demo for the Sega CD since they managed to get it display almost as many colors on screen as the PCE version.
But to me, its like playing a PS2 version of a game, with a few slight graphical flaws, in regular res compared to playing the Xbox version of the same game in 480p.
The PCE version just looks cleaner and more vibrant. Same with the sound. I love the PSG music and the Sega CD music is still good but sounds too wavy for me. But its very Genesis sounding and the PCE music sounds very PCE, so if you're a fan of either's "chip" generated music you'll be happy.
There are little things too, like the voice effect at the targeting range. The human heads have a cool over the top howl when shot in the PCE game. In the Sega CD game you get one of the Turbo CD Valis III actors sayoing "OUCH!". And from what I remember the blaster effect sounds better and cleaner in the PCE version.
Now, I've been a hardcore fan of cartoons and animation my whole life. When I was younger, I'd scour over TV channels looking for anything animated. After highschool I took a full "classicical" animation course and am qualified to do proffessional animation work(and have done some minor work).
I don't come down too hard on voice acting in games, especially when they're smaller budget. And I can really appreciate the cheezy middle ground between quality, properly directed acting and lowsy poor acting(like the awesome Fist Of The North Star). I think Space Adventure Cobra has some of the best writing and acting around.
But I really disliked the acting in the Sega CD version for the most part. I know everyone(game mag writers) seems to love it and I know that I'm going to get flamed for saying anything so sacreligious, like suggesting that Working Designs was infallible in anyway.
Now, the acting itself isn't all that bad. But we do get some Valis II Magus performances. The worst part for me was the actual voices. In the PCE version, Gillian has the most masculine voice you'll ever hear aside from MAOU GARP in Fuun Kabuki Den. And as if a polar opposite, Gillian in the Sega CD version has the most nerdy-geeky-cheezy-Rogless-from Valis III + Haizen The Ruthless from Valis II voice.
And what really kills me, is I clearly remember(what I said) on the day I was talking to a friend before the Sega CD version was released. We had just played some kind of game, I believe that it was an arcade and by Konami, but it had awful white-washed 1950's Leave It To Beaver style sitcom acting. And I said to my friend, "I hope to god they don't do that to the Sega CD version of Snatcher, imagine if they gave Gillian a voice like that?".
And when it finally came out I was so shocked that they so perfectly captured that awful wimp-wuss voice. And although I don't expect them to get one of the few decent high-pitched english voice actress' to voice "Metal", a queer old man voice is unacceptible. They should've just given it a different personallity or something.
The last part I was dissapointed with was some of the dialogue. However, a lot of the acting and dialogue is acceptible and overall its really just a mixed bag.
But some scenes were so misguidely done, that it winds up being hilarious(just like Fist Of The North Star). When Gillian "accidently" opens the shower door on the wet-naked 13 year old girl, instead of being shocked and embarressed like the PCE version, instead he screams "Woah-ho-huh-hoo!!!!!", straight out of a Porky's movie.
The crap voice trade-off is worth it just for awful scenes like that.
Otherwise, most people have already heard about the scene involving a PC Engine + CD ROM being replaced by a Sega CD combo(I won't ruin the game for you with spoilers, other than getting to see little girls in the shower).
The other noticible difference in a cinema is when 'something' happens and Gillian ends up running behind Random Hagile's bike with his tie caught in it and the other version has Gillian hanging onto the back end of the bike. I don't remember which belongs to which version, but the tie gag was too comical for me(I think that its in the PCE version).
And lastly, I almost forgot to mention that the Sega CD version is compatible with Konami's Lethal Enforcers light gun(I bought it just to get the gun for Snatcher) and is utterly useless.
-

Mixed bag? I guess, but you can't argue that dialogue was done very well. Especially since Snatcher is hard to translate as some of the jokes are a part of Japanese culture.

This scene I know is in the msx2 version. It happens when Gillian jumps out of the tricycle as it explodes.
-
The other thing that I forgot to mention is that the Sega CD version has an extra cinema intro based on the short comic/manga in the PCE version's manual.
-
Alright, judge for yourself if this is the best voice acting in an english video game. These do contain spoilers, so you've ben warned-

And if you're curious about what the PC Engine acting sounds like, here's that last track in japanese-
http://www.superpcenginegrafx.com/snatcher5.mp3
I won't say its awful and I'll take an english version of a decent game in any form, so I appreciate it a lot. But this is another overhyped game(voice wise).
-
Maybe the voice acting in US-version of Snatcher isn't the best voice acting ever, but it's not bad, frankly I think it's really good. The splendid work of the actors is partly the reason why I love Snatcher as much as I do...
-
Thanks a lot for the post, Black_Tiger; it was really great to read, I've never read any other pro-PCE version thoughts on the game really and you specified information that no other source I have read has mentioned. I can agree with you somewhat on the voice acting. A lot of voices are on the cheesy side, but I love cheesy voice acting :D , but the actors don't do a flat out terrible job as if they sounded like they were reading straight from the script, like in say Ys III. I thought it was a decent voice acting job overal, but certainly not the best.
Do you have links for music from each one available? I thought you might have posted them before in another thread, so I'll do a search for that right after this and repost them if I find them. If not, if anyone has some, please post!
-
But I really prefer the PCE version and yes, I am biased.
Haha, I love this line and respect people who do flat out admit they are biased. It just make them seen so.... not biased in a way ;) .
-
By the way, I searched for that previous Snatcher thread, but it didn't have any music download links like I might have thought. If anyone has the PSG music from the PCE one available, I'd love to listen to them! Maybe I should just go buy the game instead :P .
-
Buy the game and run the debug mode ;)
I recorded a handful of tracks from my Duo but I don't have enough space to host them.
I too am biased towards the PCE version, for a couple of (not so biased) reasons: the Japanese voiceover is obviously better (although the US one is immensely hilarious -- Ray Van Steen rules big time!), the graphics are a tad more colourful and the PSG tracks are undoubtedly superior (some of the FM arrangements of the Mega CD version are really mediocre -- not even talking about the CD tracks, like the death of *****, which have been totally changed and botched up).

Here ya go Keranu. This is a PSG medley I put together-

Its 9.44MB, so you should download it before listening.

Yeah, the acting's not bad at all by game standards, although like I said I was really dissapointed with the voices/accents the first time I played it. The important thing is that its entertaining.
But after revisiting the game, I now know that the acting and voices are a notch below Valis II Turbo CD, which gets slagged as amature, while Snatcher Sega CD is worshipped for it's voice work by Sega CD players, who I assume weren't playing Turbo Duo games before that.

You should play The Space Adventure for Sega CD. Its an awesome port of the PC Engine CD game Cobra II.
The dialogue and acting are as good as anything I've played in English. Its the closest any game has come to a quality comic book.
If you like Army Of Darkness, then you have to buy the game right away. Its not bad acting/dialogue kinda cheeze, like how Army Of Darkness is in a league way above They Live.
Its more like Sin City, but with more dark humour(and it still has lots of swearing). :D

Hey, have we ever discussed They Live? That's a great one. Anyway, I'll have to check out The Space Adventure for SegaCD. I don't think I ever played it, and your recommendation has intrigued me.

During the first scene against the villian, when you're surrounded and choose the Look command, -Crystal Boy(I think thats his name), the result: "a$$hole".
What I liked most about it is how smooth the gameplay is. You don't spend as much time as Snatcher running around wondering what to do. There are less commands, but it feels more interactive.
After talking about it, I think I might fire it up and play through again tonight. :)

They Live is the source of the 2 lines from Duke Nukem 3D that weren't ripped off of Army Of Darkness. 8)

Thanks a TON for the mp3, Black_Tiger; that was just what I needed! I have to agree, I find most of the tracks better, though there were maybe one or two that I prefered on the Sega CD. It's really nice to hear these tracks in PSG :D .
By the way, I've been wanting to play Cobra and Cobra II on PCE ever since I first saw screenshots for them on NEC-Ro-Pole a long time ago, it totally looked like my kind of game. Cobra II especially interested me since I saw shots of this badass guy on a bike and then going to the bar. I'll certainly look into getting the PCE ones and the english Sega CD one some time, are any of these rare/expensive?

You should be able to find the PCE games for $1 - $5 each. I haven't gotten into the first one, but the second would be possible in Japanese, although I wouldn't recomend it before the Sega Cd game. I beleive that there are visual and/or stage select tricks for both games, so they're still worth buying.
The Sega CD game, just called "The Space Adventure" is so worthless that its hard to find people selling it, so you'll have to keep an eye open for it.
-
Alright thanks. I was looking on eBay for the Cobra games and I tried typing for "Cobra Space Adventure Sega CD" and other keywords like that, but found nothing for it. I'll have to start looking for "The Space Adventure" next time, since that's the real title.

I've posted this link befor i still feel this site is, good to compare each version of Snatcher

While Snatcher's English voiceover was great in its cheesy way, I found the port of Cobra 2 to be just awful. Not only the translations are bad, but the voices are terrible. Cobra on the PC Engine was blessed to be voiced by drama actor Yasuo Yamada, who was picked up personally by Terasawa. Once you've heard Yamada, you can't even watch the series (in Japanese) anymore.

I wish I knew all these Japanese video game people as well as you did, Kami :D .

I wish I knew all these Japanese video game people as well as you did, Kami :D .
Seriously. In a slightly related tangent: The folks in Europe / UK definitely have an advantage over us when it comes to certain consoles / computer platforms (i.e. MSX), because they had active markets and communities for imported systems and some magazines that supported the import computing / gaming.
Off the top of my head, I can't think of a single magazine that supported Japanese computing here in the States...
Am I exaggerating things, Kami? It's not like I experienced the European scene first-hand, I'm basing my views off of stuff I've read...
Back on topic: was a FM-Towns / Marty version of Snatcher ever made? That would have been something...
-
Yeah really, Europe missed out on a lot of cool console stuff back in the day, but they more than made up for it with all the kickass computer stuff they had. I would have killed for an Amiga when I was a kid!
-
Back on topic: was a FM-Towns / Marty version of Snatcher ever made? That would have been something...
Nope, no such thing exist. I wish...

The Amiga was sweet machine and it had the best version of Maniac Manison. Definitely kicked the crap out of my C64.

Europe is awesome. My dream would be to live on a emerald green cliff in Ireland (the promised land) with the cold waves crashing against it, as I sit back listening to song tracks from the Quadrophenia album while playing a great classic video game at dawn. Talk about fine living.
-
Haha that does sound f*ckin rad, sign me up nigga!
-
Okay I couldn't resist anymore. I decided yesterday (or the day before) to download PCE Snatcher, only under one condition: to listen to the various CD tracks. But I just couldn't resists, I loaded it up in Daemon Tools and then fired it on Magic Engine and played it. I was pretty impressed with it, basically for the same reasons you guys gave.
One thing that made me happy was that there were shooting scenes. You see, I had this whole "Act 3 system" thing greatly confused. I always thought this referred TO those shooting scenes in the Sega CD one, since on that WebTV site it said the Act 3 system on PCE was more of a sit and watch thing while the Sega CD one gave you more to do, and this line greatly confused me years ago into thinking that the shooting scenes originally started in the Sega CD one, and not the PCE. It's insane, I kept thinking "Act 3" was some cheesy name for the gun system, since it used a 3x3 grid, haha. Now I understand that this refers to the ACTUL Act PART 3 in the game, where as Black_Tiger said you watch cinemas in the PCE one and then in the Sega CD one you have to do some guessing and what not (right?).
On the graphic subject, I think I noticed some things. First of all, we know that the Sega CD one got that nice extra opening with Gillian talking to that chick before they leave, which was a nice addition to add for gamers. Then another obvious difference is that there is one clear building in Neo Tokyo that says "NEC", while the Sega CD one says "SEGA" I think (can't remember if it's Sega, I know there are screenshots for it somewhere). I also caught a couple different message face shots of Gillian in the PCE one which I don't remember in the Sega CD, like when you find out Little John has a bomb in him. And also to comment on the message face art, it seems the PCE one adds more frames of animation for the mouth movement or gestures, I just don't remember it looking that smooth when I played it on Sega CD before, but I could surely be wrong. And also some of the screens are drawn a little different of course. It seems the PCE version has more anime-ish art in a small way.
It's not so bad playing PCE Snatcher in Japanese, I was able to understand it since I beat the Sega CD one twice before and it only takes a little bit to learn the options, plus all the screens, animation, faces gives you a lot of action to put everything together. I played all the way up until you go to that one chick's house (I think her name is Katrina, but I don't remember) and she asks you a question, I believe for her age or her dad's age, but I don't know it. I guess I would have to use the computer in the game and look up the characters to find out. Lucky for me I understand some hiragana and katakana, so it's easier for me to remember the characters as it is for others. My very small Japanese language knowledge surprisingly helps me understand this game too :D .
Oh and the voices in the PCE version are pretty dead on, I love them. However I don't like Metal Gear's voice so much, though I didn't think the Sega CD version had the appropriate voice actor either. I guess the PCE voice is better since it does fit a mini Metal Gear robot more, but it's hard to say what would fit Metal Gear. Great PSG and CD sound/music by the way, overall I enjoy it more than the Sega CD version, though there are still a couple chip tunes I like more on the Sega CD one.
I would have to play through the PCE one entirely to say which one I think is better, just so I can check out the Act 3 in the PCE one and stuff. I'd probably say that the PCE version is better overall, but it's worth playing the Sega CD version a lot more if you don't understand Japanese.
-
Isn't the Sega CD Snatcher the only English version? Was there even a Japanese Mega CD version? I don't believe Japan got that one.
I played the PCE version a little bit a while back. I wasn't really into those types of games back then, but I seem to be craving them after playing Phoenix Wright on DS (another game I strongly recommend).
You might want to check out Dead of the Brain I II. It's supposedly like Snatcher (graphic adventure) but then again it's all in Japanese. It's also pricey... hmm... maybe not a good recommendation after all... :?
-
I love digital comic games, I really wish more of them were in English. The Sega CD Snatcher is the only Snatcher game that was released outside of Japan and the Sega CD version didn't even have a Japanese release. Pretty interesting, eh? I guess Japan didn't really need it though since they were focused a lot more on PCE CD anyways, so at least we scored for once.
I saw screenshots and videos for Dead of the Brain I & II remakes for PCE, it looked awesome. There are some other digital comics I would love to play, like 3x3 Eyes which you showed us the excellent opening cinemas for with SCD and ACD format :D .
-

The late Yasuo Yamada was also the voice of Lupin the 3rd! He's amazing!

I found the porno tape in the PCE Snatcher at the Joy Division shop (heh), it was pretty funny and not quite what I expected. I made a save state before it happened, so I might try recording it later and upload it for everyone to see. You might know this already, but it doesn't actually show the video, but you do hear some soft sounds of it and it's funny because Gillian's voice is softer and he is drooling (some really nice facial expressions Gillian makes here, I don't think they are shown in other versions) and Metal Gear goes nuts and his/her/it's face box starts getting near Gillian as if he's trying to make him stop and then it starts bouncing all over the place.
Also when you go down the the plaza where you meet Napolean, you get to learn a few different numbers in that scene. Metal Gear tells you one of them when he talks to you there and if you call it, it asks you sets of questions each time you call about Snacther. The first set of questions I believe were: What year was Snatcher First Made? What was Snatcher first made for? How many discs does the PC88 Snatcher have? How Many Discs does the PC Engine Snatcher have? I can't read Japanese very well at all, but I was able to understand these questions and I got them all correct :D . I took a screenshot of one of the questions, which asks What was Snatcher First Made On? and it lists PC88, MSX, x86000, FM Towns. Might upload it later for you guys.
I know there was a number in the Sega CD version that you got to call during this scene and it was for a sex line. Maybe the number in the PCE one I called was changed to a sex line in the Sega CD one. Anyone know anything about this? Also you call then number again and it asks you more new questions. If you go to your caller list, it will be labeled as what Q set of question you are on, like I am on Q2 right now. Pretty neat stuff.

Sounds like your having fun on the pce version.
When you beat, Snatcher i realy suggest importing, Policenauts either for the (Saturn or PS1).
Hideo did it again with this great digital comic game also.
Still to bad, Hideo has stated no more digital comic games for him.
-
Policenauts is a game I have been wanting to play for awhile. I was trying to download the original PC98 version before, but had no luck finding it. What's the status on the 3DO version, is that Japanese only? I think I read on that WebTV site that it came close to coming out here for 3DO in America, but it was cut, this might have been the Saturn version though. Anyone here play any version of the game? And if anyone has played the PC98, please tell me how it is and how it compares, I just love the old-skool style more.

It would seem to me that it'd be technically easier to make a digital comic game on the PCE instead of some action/platformer. The big thing though is having a good story and characters.
I used to hate the digital comic games but that was until I realized that these very games had the good stories rather than most RPGs.
WIth all that said, Policenauts for PCE would have been cool. :)

A PCE port of Policenauts would've been so awesome. It would have been like the usual PC98 > PCE port, but the PCE version would have some extras and what not which would really be sweet :D .
It's basically easier to make a digital comic for any console than it would be for an action game. They are just nice on PCE because of the PCE's wonderful abilities of handing so many colors on screen :D . But really, you can make a action/platformer for PCE as easily as you would for Genesis or SNES :P .

Ranma 1/2 "2" is totally playable without any japanese knowledge and its a really well done, fun "digital comic".
I haven't played it since finishing it years ago, but I think that most or some of the commands were symbols. Either way, its very simple to control, very straight-forward(especially compared to Snatcher) but still feels very interactive.
One of the chapters is a game show thats very cool. The graphics are really sharp and colorful. I feel like playing through some of these games now after reminiscing about them. :)
I tried out Dead Of The Brain and didn't have much fun. 1 looks pretty ancient and 2 seemed too convoluted. They may have been using the novelty of gore as a drawing factor over gameplay, but I never really played far enough to figure it out.
Gunbuster Vol.2 is about as straight-forward as they come. Its more of a fmv/choose-your-own-adv game and if you make any mistakes, you start back at the last decision point. I think that there are different paths with different endings, but I only played through it once and it was nice but not too much fun.
Policenauts for Saturn was very cool and lots of fun. Like Snatcher, there's a lot more work in it, but its also very rewarding. It also seemed easier to understand than Snatcher. The Saturn version is supposed to be best, but the PSX version should also be near identical, with slightly cleaner fmv, longer loads and a few missing graphical effects(Saturn exclusives, ironically mostly transparencies I believe).
The 3DO version's claim to fame is that it still has the talking heads from Snatcher. But the game saves aren't compatible with a U.S. system, so you'll have to emulate it or buy an import console.

Yeah, but theoretically, it should be harder to implement independantly scrolling bg layers or 2D warping effects.
Of course, you could throw a lot more around on screen though. But to get the most out of the PCE's color capabilities, you have to break things up(like bg's) to cut down on colors per' limits.
I say theoretically of course, because I'm not not a PCE game developer and can only go by what I've read...

Parallax scrolling isn't a problem with the PCE programmers today, they have great techniques for it and the results have been great :D .

Cool man. What about full on independant bg's and/or scrolling layers that are a real overlapping shape(not just lined up slates)?
-
You'll have to talk to the programmers about that one  . (#utopiasoft on EFNet)

So I picked up the Sega CD version of Snatcher. Just on the 1st Act but this game is so cool. I just pissed off Katrina by trying trying to console her after the death of her father. 'urges' Ha! Good stuff man!

Does anyone have any Magic Engine save states for Snatcher at act3 or so?
-
Nope, but I do have one for when Gillian finds the porno tape at the black market :D . I need to record the video and upload it so all Snatcher fans can enjoy it.

I'll take this opportunity to praise Kingshriek (http://snesmusic.org/hoot/kingshriek/) for his excellent HES rip of Snatcher. Give it a try and hail the power of PSG!

I downloaded it a week or two ago and tried it out a few days ago, great stuff :) . Thanks, Kingshriek!
