Preferably a Japanese one, to play famicom games. The cheaper, the better

Get the RetroN 3.

He needs a portable one. I'd be interested in the advice too, seeing as I STILL haven't AV modded my Famicom
Wow, if you've got a DS, the FC Cassette looks SICK

Damn, that does look really sweet...

I have a portable one that attaches to the GBA SP that is pretty sweet (can't remember the name). I'll try to post photos or figure out the name later.

I have one like that called the Handi FamiEight (sic). I'm assuming the core functionality is the same as the FC Cassette since it's plugged into the GBA slot on that SP.
The actual image you get on the screen is...not good. Its basically f*cking terrible, honestly. Its not un-playable, but its pretty awful. Everything else about the unit is pretty good though. The composite out is damned good. It's cart port is native FC but comes with a NES adaptor. It also comes with two controllers that aren't that bad by the standards of Famiclones.

That's the one that I have! I typically play through the AV out to my TV rather than the GBA screen.

the fc mobile 2 is not much better. controls are fine and sound is good, but the lcd is garbage. has plenty of room for a larger lcd. should get one and have steve put it in.

This is cool, but I was really more hoping for a Japanese one, to play Famicom cartridges without an adapter. I was eyeballing this one...

...but $50 just seems like so much for that, especially considering what I've heard of their quality.

The way the A/B buttons are flipped would be a deal killer for me.

I believe the Pokefami 2 looks just like the FC Mobile 2 but plays Famicom games directly too. Not sure how much a Pokefami 2 would cost, but probably more than $50. The one in the 2nd link is the first Pokefami. I agree, the A/B buttons being swapped is a huge deal breaker and would be so awkward.

Same company, thats a fc mobile 1. quality was ok, buttons are flipped as jerry mentioned. not a good machine overall. the pokefami is an updated fc mobile 2 and very expensive from what i have seen.

Game Axe, it's an old portable famiclone.

Shouldn't be too hard to rewire the buttons.

It breaks your limitation for playing it.
