Anyone's a fan of the Cartoon??
I'm a big fan..
-
yes it comes on qubo in los angeles.
-
I have it on DVD, But still watch it on the hub
-
Gobots all the way....
I keed, I keed.
Check out the chit chat forums, some transformers related conversations in there.
-
Yup, I have all the dvd's of the shows released so far(even the ones that suck beyond suck....COUGH....Armada...COUGH). I basically have all the G1 DVD's, including the Headmasters, Masterforce, & Victory. I just wish those ones were dubbed, that would've been nice.
-
Yup
-
The show came out when I was in the third grade. Transformers, GI*Joe and Robotech are my three faves.
I'm already indoctrinating my 3 year old daughter for a lifelong love of transformers. Not sure if she'll be into G1 though. The storybooks I read her are derived from the live action movies and Transformers: Animated.

It is?? I had no idea. Thanks for the heads up!

I was the biggest fan of Transformers (G1) I'd ever met. There are probably more obsessive people on the net, but when I was a kid, that and lego were pretty much the only toys I was into, even after Transformer toys started to suck. Still have all of them.
And I still can't believe my mum threw out my collection of around 300 transformer comics some 17 years ago. Stupid stupid stupid.
-
Yup. I was a huge fan as a kid and I would have loved it if the toys were the quality of today's "Masterpiece" stuff but with the prices they were back in the day. Not sure what I'd do with the toys of today as I don't care to simply pose them on shelves and I can't really get into playing with toys like I did back then (wooosh! pew pew!).
-
I was a big fan of the cartoon when I was a kid, but aside from a few quality episodes (e.g., Webworld), it hasn't held up very well for me. I still own the old movie and give it a watch every now and then for all the awesome one-liners.
At this point, I'm a much bigger fan of the old Marvel Transformers comics. They were generally darker than the cartoon (there weren't too many cartoon episodes like the string of comics that saw Shockwave blast up the Autobots, hang them from the ceiling, decapitate Prime, and seize power from Megatron by pummeling him) and made some very memorable characters out of certain Transformers (Shockwave, Ratchet, Blaster, Scorponok, etc.).
Robotech is an old cartoon I can still appreciate and enjoy.
-
Yup, it was my favorite cartoon growing up, as well as my favorite toy line. I've got the series on DVD, and I still have some of the old toys, as well as some of the G1 inspired newer toys.

I started buying the comics at issue #8 (five years old). I couldn't believe how they kept Prime dead/MIA for years. Looking back, it's cool the writers followed such an unorthodox, captivating storyline, but as a kid waiting an eternity to buy each new monthly issue off the newsstand, it was pure torture. Still have all eighty issues and my action figures. I think about selling the figures from time to time as I could use a cash cow and they've done nothing but sit in a box for twenty years.

Nice! I think #8 was my first issue too. I remember being baffled as to why Ratchet was the only Autobot around and Shockwave was leading the Decepticons. I think I'm missing two or three issues from the original run... I should pick them up on eBay sometime. I didn't have too many of the toys because a lot of them seemed poorly made and way off scale relative to others, and in many cases they didn't look much like the characters in the cartoon. The one I still have is Cyclonus, as he was my favorite in the show.
-
I loved the toys (still do) up through Masterforce but the TV show was craparoo. The Movie is obviously awesome as f*ck, and a few episodes, mainly Call of the Primitives (bizarrely awesome, how did it get made?) but other than that it's pretty amazingly shitty. Better than Rainbow Bright, maybe, but considering Japanese were getting stuff like Zeta Gundam, Votoms, Dunbine, and whatnot...Transformers is just idiotic badly made garbage.
The best thing about the TV show was that it made The Movie possible.
Masterforce was...decent, maybe close to Inspector Gadget (in plot, certainly not in production) but that's about all I can say.
It all kicks the shit out of Beast Wars though. That shit is just worthless.
-
I have most of the Marvel comics myself. I used to even have issue 1 but I can't find it, so my collection starts with issue 2. It ends somewhere around The Mechanic's second or third appearance. It just stated getting boring and the new characters/toys just weren't very interesting.

The Mechanic stuff was awful. After the Shockwave-dominated arc and with a few occasional exceptions, the story went from really dark and interesting to really campy, from Prime being beheaded and Autobots being chucked into smelting pools to cosmic carnivals and Decepticons starring in movies. I have to admit that some of the goofy stuff was a guilty pleasure for me, but a few stories were just plain bad.
Things got good again towards the end after Simon Furman came on to do the writing. He brought back a lot of "legends" like Ratchet and Shockwave, focused on character development, and added a dark overtone to the series.

Ah, as far as toys, I was a huge collector. I still have most of my old G1 stuff, but also have bought all the US released G1 reissues, as well as a few Japanese ones, like Megs. I have virtually all the Beast Wars, Beast Machines, RiD(probably my favorite line), Armada, Engeron, Cybertron, Classics, Generatsion, Titaniums(the transformable ones, & a few of the non TF ones), Universe, US Masterpiece(& Megs), Alternator's, Animated, the first Bay movie figures, & some Machine Wars.
Animated is the last main line I decided to collect all the characters for, as I just can't do the combo of $ & lack of space. I didn't bother with the 2nd & 3rd Bayformers, aside from a couple that are pretty sweet. And obviously I haven't been collecting Prime, with exception to Airachnid(a female Decepticon, I had to). I'll probably get a Prime & Megs of the Prime show eventually.
As far as Beast Wars in general goes. I used to have a hot blood passion of hatred for the show. I remember crying out something along the lines of "this isn't MY Transformers, this sucks!". However, around when Beast Machines came out, I noticed that the final form BW Megs took, was a Dragon. I love Dragons, & I love Transformers. So, that opened an avenue for me. Plus, since it's in the same timeline as G1, I started to take some interest in the show. Eventualy, I ended up loving the show, & most of the figures. A few G1 characters showed up(like Ravage & Starscream), but most were new(even if a bunch of them has stupid names, like Dinobot). Probably my favorite character in the show was Dinobot, & his struggle with being naturally born of the warrior class(where all con's initially came from in G1), but disagreeing with that era's Megatron. He was incredibly noble, & in some ways even reminds me a bit of Cyclonus, who also had a noble side to him shown in the Killing Jar episode.
Anyways, BW isn't for everyone, but, like I said, I used to loathe that show, & now I love it. My favorite TF shows are G1 & BW. The other one's just haven't done it for me, though, people seem to rave about Prime. I have the first season on Blu ray, but havn't finished it yet.
-

Was that the one where he saved Ultra Magnus' life and then was like "Warriors like us should die on the battlefield"? That was one of the cartoon's best moments. It needed more scenes like that and less stuff about Megatron making/stealing some super-duper death gun or Optimus sending in Bumblebee and the kid in the wheelchair to save the planet.
-
When I was a kid I loved the G1 show, saw the original movie in the theaters back then. But, as has been said, I don't think that the show holds up as well as some other shows of its time. But, I have kids now that are young enough to be into the shows and I must say that "The Animated" series (on Cartoon Network) and the recent "Prime" series (which is on Neflix if anyone uses that) are actually both very cool shows. Plus the action figures are ALOT like the TV show counterparts. Something that the G1 figures didn't really do (Hound and Ironhide come immediately to mind).
-
My favorite issue of the comic series was the one where Cloudburst almost married an amazon woman. I liked how the cover was all grim, with her holding Cloudburst's severed head, but it was actually a love story. That was a tricky way to get teenage boys to buy it!

Yup, that's the one.
As for Chip Chase, even as a kid, I had mixed emotions about him. I didn't mind Spike, but, Chip... Still, for me, G1 holds up very well. There are other shows that I've tried to watch that I love as a kid, that I just can't get into anymore. I did get the M.A.S.K. boxset, but haven't watched it yet.
And yeah, today's figures, like em or not, do closely resemble the show models. Ironhide & Ratchet. Man, I want them to release reissue's of them stateside, but....hmmm. I'm glad they all got redesigns for the show.
-

Gonna say, Hound was spot on. Man I love Transformers. My favorite story was Target: 2029. The scraplets were good, Deaths Head was a good story line though the character sucked. Starscream becoming omnipotent with the database... Cyclonus, Soundwave and Ratbat all leading the decepticons at some point... the special teams (though Devastator is the original and best), Omega Supreme...
I haven't read those comics in 20 years, but I still remember the great storylines.
Oh, but the space bridge transforming? That was gay.
-
1984 is the Best..
I had Starscream :) I wish I could collect the G1 Toys
-
TOYS: I only had a few of them because they were expensive. But I thought they were kool.
CARTOON: I enjoyed watching it. Even as a kid, however, I knew that the GI JOE cartoon was better.
COMICS: I only read a few random comics as a kid. I REALIZE NOW THAT I MUST READ THEM. The same applies for GI JOE comics (I only remember reading one--where Major Bludd blows up (with a bazooka?) a station wagon driven by nuns ). NUNS!
TANGENT: A few years ago, I was excited because I noticed that the G1 cartoon series was being aired on TV...BUT IT WAS A RE-PACKAGED (edited?) version of the show with horrible CGI transitions. It made the show even choppier than it already was. I was sad. So I went to the dollar store and bought the spanish-language VHS of a new (at the time) GI JOE series. GOOD GOD THAT WAS AWFUL, TOO. Luckily, I also picked up an episode of C.O.P.S. on VHS, which I never liked much as a kid (too juvenile compared to GI JOE, hah!). C.O.P.S., compared to the other crap, seemed AMAZING. Lesson? Everything is relative.

Heads up Thundercracker is now available online through ToysRUs
-
G1 Thundercracker?
-
Transformers, Yeah I am a huge fan wouldn't miss an episode. I still have the original Optimus prime, and another transformer that I can not remember his name "Decepticon" turns into 7 different things, anyone know?
-
Do you mean Six Shot? He transforms into 6 different things.
-
I wouldn't say those things are all that "different".
Anyone remember the Deluxe Insecticons? I thought they were pretty bad-ass but they never showed up in official cannon.
-
Don't quote me, but I "think" the deluxe Insecticons(& the Jumpstarters, & the Deluxe Autobots) have appeared in the more recent comics, either Dreamwave or IDW. I've kinda stopped collecting those comics, since there's just too damn many of them, & I'm not much of a reader, so it takes forever for me to go thru them.
-
I remember the Jumpstarters. They were incredibly hard to transform. It took me 3 weeks to figure out how to transform Top Spin into his vehicle mode. I finally figured it out and then I got Twin Shaft or whoever he was and it was another 3 week learning curve there because he was so incredible different. [/sarcasm] They were in the Transformers Universe comics (which weren't actually comics). I kind of remember the Deluxe Autobots. I'm sure I had a few but I can't recal them right now. TO GOOGLE!
EDIT: Oh hell yeah, Whirl! I used to have that skinny a$$hole. I remember being impressed by how large his Autobot symbol was. What other ones were there? I can't find any.
-
Roadbuster is the other one: http://tfu.info/1985/Autobot/Roadbuster/roadbuster.htm
(http://tfwiki.net/w2/images2/7/7e/G1Roadbuster_toy.jpg)
They are doing a remold of the recent Bruticus...
.... to be the Wreckers(Topspin, Twintwist, Whirl, Roadbuster, & Impactor)
http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Ruination_%28Generations%29 (http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Ruination_(Generations))
They're not what I'd call perfect, but I think they're pretty cool none the less.
Topspin
(http://tfwiki.net/w2/images2/e/e8/Generationstoy-Topspin.jpg)
Twintwist
(http://tfwiki.net/w2/images2/8/89/Generationstoy-Twintwist.jpg)
Roadbuster

Whirl

Impactor(relatively new character)
Oh, & it looks like the Deluxe Insecticons did have some minor comic book appearances in the old Marvel UK comics, as well as in recent years
(http://tfwiki.net/w2/images2/9/93/DestinedforNothing_DeluxeInsecticons.jpg)
-
Holy crap I had Roadbuster, too! He was pretty bad-ass looking. Why didn't they appear in official canon?
The new ones look less impressive. The merged robot's torso is way too small. The colors are also a bit flamboyant. Their guns are ridiculous. They don't look as sleek as the old models but instead kind of clunky.
EDIT: So I'm looking at this page and a lot of these things aren't even transformed properly in their photos. Blitzwing and Bonecrusher have incomplete robot modes. I haven't gotten past the B's yet but I'm sure there's more. And I am once again reminded of the pretenders. I bought one. That's when I stopped buying the toys because they were just stupid.
-
I think the Deluxe Autobots & Insecticons not appearing might've partially had to do with them being originally made by a different company(Bandai I think?), though, that didn't stop them from having Shockwave or Sky/Jetfire in the show. :-k
-
Ooops, for got to put the URL in my last post when I referred to "this page". I mean this ---> http://www.tfu.info/series/g1.htm Great to see all of those old ones again but it drives me nuts that some aren't transformed correctly.
EDIT: Holy crap! Omnibots! I had those! Even more than never got any love.
-
Ah, yes, TFU. That site comes in handy, but, yeah, there are tons of mistransformations. Man, the Omnibots, I wanted those. I did get a few mail away's. I got Reflector, & I also got Sunstreaker thru the mail away program. I think I got a couple of those Power Dasher's or whatever they're called.
-
I never had Reflector but I wanted him bad and wondered why there was no toy of him. I never saw the mail order thing until it was too late. I wonder why some of these guys were mail order only. The Omnibots weren't cheaply made or anything. Was Sunstreaker ever sold in stores? I had one friend who had him but I never saw him at retail.
-
I always loved that they had an Omnibot named Camshaft that turned into a RX-7. RX-7s do not have camshafts.
-

I don't know where deluxe Insecticons came from, but Roadbuster and Whirl were molds they bought from Takatoku who had just gone into receivership. They were from the anime Dvorak. Likewise, Jetfire was a Macross VF-1S. Some of them even have UN Spacy stickers on them. Since this was the 80s, and people weren't as litigious as they are now, this was actually possible. However, Jetfire was in the show and the anime, although he was completely redesigned to the point where the only similarity is that he's a red and white plane. He was also renamed Skyfire much of the time.
-
Yeah I still don't know which one is Jetfire or which one is Skyfire or why one name was ever used over the other. The one in the cartoon and comic looked absurd. But I immediately knew that Jet/Skyfire wasn't a REAL Transformer when I saw some Robotech cartoon playing on TV and there were 100s of them flying around, looking just like my toy. I kept watching Robotech and Jet/Sky Fire was the only thing they had that looked cool and they had HUMANS controlling them which I though was pretty lame, so I stopped watching.
-
Well, as a show Macross is approximately one trillion times better than Transformers.
Also, all the characters in early Transformers were from other toy lines, and most of them have pilots. This is why guys like Prime and Wheeljack and Grimlock and whoever have little seats in them; for the Diaclone dudes that originally controlled them. The only early TFs without cockpits were the Microman Change toys like Reflector and Megatron, most of which (all?) became Decepticons.
-
Sunstreaker was deffinitely in stores. The mail order version, from what I recall, didn't include a box, but it did have a B&W copy of the tech specs. I wanna say that Mirage, & maybe Hound were also available this way, maybe a few others. Any bot that is in those catalog's(that come packaged with them) was available in store's. Some theorize that Reflector was originally planned for stores since he was fairly prominent in atleast the first season.
Hasbro has talked of taking the Generation Perceptor & remolding him to be a Reflector. I'd prefer it were 3 bots that combine into a camera, but, I might still budge if they do the remold, but ofcoarse, I'd have to buy 3.
As for the Deluxe Insecticons, I did some more reading & found this in Barrage's page
Barrage, like all of the Deluxe Insecticons, was designed and originally produced by Takatoku Toys for inclusion in their Armored Insect Battalion Beetras toyline (機甲虫隊ビートラス). Decoed in black and grey, the mold first saw release under the name Beet-Gadol. Takatoku Toys went out of business a short while later in 1984, and their assets were purchased by fellow Japanese toymaker Bandai. At that time, the American market was one Bandai was not very active in, which made it a competitor of Takara, but not of Hasbro. Due to this, the company had no objection to licensing various Takatoku molds to Hasbro in 1985 for sale in the American market primarily as part of their version of the The Transformers toyline. Nowadays, Bandai has a worthwhile interest in every market and since it only once licensed the molds, there is little likelihood that Barrage and company will ever be put up for reissue.
Since Hasbro and Takara shared the Generation 1 cartoon as promotional material for their respective versions of the toyline, Barrage and the other Deluxe Insecticons were not included in its cast to avoid giving Japanese market-competitor Bandai free publicity. The group was also omitted from the US Marvel comics and barely appeared in the UK Marvel comics, making them the least "successful" of the Takatoku molds. This trend has continued in fiction since, the team's current highlight being their role in the Micromasters comics.
Barrage, Chop Shop and Venom all appeared in their Beetras color schemes on Hasbro's 1985 packaging mural, along with several other toys in early or unused color schemes.

Ha, here's some alternate smaller(& apparently liscensed) versions of the Deluxe Insecticons

I think I had the binocular guy at the bottom, he seems really familiar!
