Title: Famicom Bonk = Horrible
Post by: KingDrool on February 05, 2006, 06:58:03 AM
I finally played the Famicom version of Bonk's Adventure (FC Kid) the other day, and sweet lord was it bad.  From the graphics to the sound to the hideous control, this game is utter blasphemy in the face of my all-time favorite game.

Anyone ever play this pile of crap?

Is the Famicom the same as the American release for NES? I've played the NES one and I didn't think it was so bad, thought it was pretty decent actually, just not as good as the original. It was kind of whacked though since the level order was all screwed up along with being easier and the whole game in general being not as good, but it wasn't bad for a NES port.

Yeah I have Bonk's Adventure on NES. To tell you the truth I kinda liked it a bit. With the limited use of 4 channels on the system, I liked the 8-bit arrangement of the title screen music from TG16 Bonk.

I thought FC Bonk was decent considering the hardware.  However, I never played the TG/PCE version that much.  I was more disappointed that Bonk was released on other systems.  Seemed that SFC and MD got the best of the PCE games/franchises while the PCE hardly got anything in return.

The PCE did get a bunch of Sega(arcade) ports, even if most weren't great ports.

Its been a long time, I haven't tried it since it first came out, but at the time I thought that the NES version of Bonk was really good for an NES port. I've never liked the SFC Bonks though and the arcade game is too Mega Man-arcadey, no-real levels-y.

I have the Gameboy version of Bonk's Adventure and it's pretty tight as far as GB games go.  I used to have the NES version and thought it was decent, but the best non-Turbo Bonk game would have to be the Japanese Super Bonk 2.  The first was pretty good too, just too easy (like all of them, but it was SUPER easy).

True, there are a number of arcade ports on the PCE.  However, what about original games from each system?  MD got Cosmic Fantasy, LoT, GoT, sequels to splatterhouse (and not even the original... huh??), dungeon explorer, Lodoss, and others I don't even remember now.  Did PCE get anything that was orginally on MD or SFC?  Honestly, I don't know but it seems that franchises that started on PCE jumped ship to MD and SFC rather than the other way around.

Maybe I'm just bitter.  No, I AM bitter.

Recently, I've been researching different versions of the same games to see what the differences are.  Re-reading Aaron's LoT comparsion page and reading about Snatcher here sparked my interest in the subject.

Since when did MD get GoT ;) ? Anyways, yeah I agree with you here, it does kind of suck that other consoles just stole a bunch of Turbo franchises. Another interesting thing to mention is how PCE got lots of PC88/98 ports.

Is the Famicom version really that bad? I've seen it posted around in emulation communities but I've never really got around to trying it out.  Maybe I ought to see whether it really is that bad!

Someone mentioned PC Engine Sega ports earlier, Shinobi is a great port but the sad part is that is missing a stage.

I am quite fond of the PCE Sega arcade ports actually. I thought it did a really great job on After Burner II, a good job on Out Run, Thunder Blade, Columns, and I though they even did a good job on porting Space Harrier, though some may disagree. All the other ports I didn't mention were good too from what I remember. I personally thought they were mostly better home conversions than others at the time.

I don't know that it's that horrible, but I believe that a number of sub-levels were cut due to memory limitations, making it a smaller game.

I guess it'd be cool to play if you wanted to play a Bonk game and had no access to a TG-16 or an emulator, but if you played the TG-16 version, the only reason to touch this one would be out of curiosity.

in matter of fact, most of the PCE ports are much more great than the original sega MD pendant! especially afterburner II & Out run. but on the other hand, the MD versions of altered beast and golden axe are still "untouchabled"!

I quite like the Sega arcade ports on our beloved PCE. My favorites are Thunder Blade, After Burner II, Space Harrier, Power Drift, and Outrun.

Space Harrier is my favorite of the lot. I spent a billion hours with that game, and I'm still not sick of it, unlike most games that I've played too much.

PCE Space Harrier retains a lot of magic... including the music, sound effects, etc.

You know, the single major reason I even bought my Turbo Express is because of the Sega arcade ports.  I have a Game Gear with Master Gear converter (lets you play Master system carts) and the SMS versions of Shinobi, Space Harrier, and Outrun (couldn't stand SMS Afterburner) were some of my most played portable games, even though I have a DS with tons of stuff on it too.

The Sega ports, although not 100% arcade perfect, were the best of their time and make for some of the best portable fun there is.  I personally find it hilarious that no Sega system had better ports until the 32-bit systems arrived.

As a side note-I FINALLY beat Shinobi (PCE version) for the first time today! *ninja backflip!*  I had beaten the SMS version before, but it's not really the same game, and I'd never gotten close in the arcade.

*edit* I think this thread has been officially hijacked, I forgot that it was originally about the Famicom Bonk  :D

Just don't mention Golden Axe.

I have yet to play the PCE CD version of Golden Axe, but I've heard lots of strong things about how bad the gameplay is in it. Nodtveidt can give you a full scoop on it ;) .

the only prob of space harrier was the missing of the chessfield like playground. when even the SMS/GG version got that feature, why they couldn't do the same on the PCE  any way great game with a lot of nostalgic memories!

Heh Keranu, I'll give the full scoop when I have a chance someday (certainly not today) but as a summary I can say this...the PCE port of Golden Axe is, without a shadow of a doubt, the absolute shittiest port I have EVER seen. Awesome cinemas though...but the gameplay and in-game graphics are so terribly subpar that I cannot believe it was actually released.

I am fairly 100% sure you have already gave us a full scoop of this game before on these boards :D .
